As that famous purple dinosaur Barney once sang "we're going on an adventure, fun for you and me, we're going on an adventure, just you wait and see", it certainly really feels like we are embarking on an adventure now we have finally made it out of the house.
The last 2 weeks have had many unbelievable obstacles put in our way, so much so we really thought we would be delayed. First, Gav's nose job, then the day before we were due to fly Joe looked like he had chicken pox - spots all over his face and rash on the body, and it wasnt until the day of departure that it was confirmed it wasn't and he was clear to go - phew! They do say don't work with children, and the same view could be said for travelling too - or at the very least you need to be prepared for the unexpected if that is at all possible, and certainly dont expect any sympathy - only i told you so!
Being away for 7 weeks has in itself stimulated its own To Do list, which in true form was being ticked off walking out of
the door, into the taxi and is still going. Deadlines were always made for us to cut them fine, no?!
People kept asking me if i was excited about the trip, and of course i was, but i didnt really have time to enjoy being excited as we really had so much to do - or rather i had made myself a lot to do. Once we were in the taxi and heading to the airport a sense of relief came, the To Do list faded as i could not really worry now about getting any more done before leaving, and i now felt we were on holiday and the enjoyment could begin.
The Airport experience proved pretty smooth and painless. I am grateful for T4 and not T5 this time though. The boys were really well behaved, including Gav too. Time passed quickly and we were boarding the plane, not quite knowing what to expect, hoping for the best and dreading the worst to come...
All aboard the 777 and settled into seats. Rows of 3 so someone had to sit across the aisle. Maybe thats why I found the flight so good! We took off
at 10pm and soon after Jack curled up in his window seat with blankie and rabbi (his rabbit not a spiritual leader in case you were wondering), and Joe too with his ellie and aggie (again, his cuddly elephant and blanket, and not one half of the cleaning ladies duo). We didnt even have to coax them into it, they must really been knackered - i dont think we could believe our luck! A few hours later after the plain plane dinner and movie (21 for me - quite good, students coerced into Vegas blackjack counting money-making venture by Kevin Spacey) - i did fall asleep before the end so it cant have been that good, but then again thats not saying much as that does happen quite a lot to me.
About 5 hours to go and Jack complained of stomach ache and then the vomiting began....our luck had run out. It wasnt actually that bad, no projectile or extremely pungent smells eminating, just a few discreet puckies over Gav and blankie, the toys got it too unfortunately. The air crew were fantastic. A short while later just as we hit some mild turbulance with lights flashing "fasten
safety belts" another wave of vomit hit the deck but again very understated. We then landed. Now we were very relieved that we had decided to stay a few nights in Singapore, and we werent heading straight onto Perth.
It seems that Jack now had what Joe had, but no puking for Joe just rash, cold and temperature. After Gav and Joe, we werent expecting Jack to go down and thank goodness it wasnt before we left home.
The Swissotel Merchant Court was certainly a very welcome sight. Our interconnecting rooms were a blessing - and the kids room was decked out in dinosaur bedlinen and kids ikea furniture and toys. Our mac provided DVD relief in the form of Charlie&Lola. This all cheered Jack up no end, he loved it and it was great to see him so happy after being so brave feeling so ill.
Time zone is 7 hours ahead and by now it was about 7pm on Thursday, we ventured out over to Clarke's Quay for a wander and some food. And then came back to our home from home for much needed bed! The peace and tranquility of our bedroom however was
slowly invaded by bangs and crashes of the building site across the road - we had noticed it before and the amusement it provided soon wore off, but somehow its melodic symphony became a lullaby as we all eventually drifted off to sleep...
