Saturday. Left Yelvertoft near Crick at 10:15. Weather sunny but with a keen wind. Uneventful until reaching Watford Top Lock. We are boat number 9 in the queue! Time of arrival in the queue is 12 noon. Through the locks by 16:00 and we decided to proceed through Braunston Tunnel before looking for a mooring for the night. Lovely, sunny day but quite breezy. David played with his new gizmo - a GPS tracker - a birthday present form his boys. Braunston Tunnel an evil place. We hit the sides a few times because of the way it snakes along. Reached the end and decided to moor up straight away at 6:20pm. Rang Mum at about ten past seven after preparing supper (chicken and bacon casserole). Had to climb up over the tunnel to get a ... read more

Well here I go again! In two days time I will be heading off to Egypt for a 10 day trip of the main archeological sites. This time I am not alone as my boyfriend Richard is coming with me along with two people from my India trip -Chris and Alan and I am guessing a few others on the tour! I am sooooo excited. I was a little nervous at the beginning of the year that it might be cancelled but things seem to have settled down and the Egyptians are keen for tourists to return. The tour will start in Cairo and will include The Pyramids, Aswan, Valley of the Kings, Kom Ombo and Edfu temples a Nile Cruise and a possible flight to Abu Simbel. Oh, did I forget to mention I will ... read more

My departure date of March 27th is looming fast, Portsmouth to Bilbao on Brittany Ferries. The situation in NE Africa only leaves the West Coast route viable. So a short stay in Spain and Portugal then over to Morocco and SOUTH. Overland 5 was the name of a bus trip ( Double decker of course) by 5 Englishmen in 1970.This bus is still in use just South of Auckland NZ. I am no stranger to Africa having now been to Niger some 8 times in the past 2 years. But this trip I aim to encompass a longer stay in the village I sponsor and achieve a meaningful change in their lives by the introduction of an irrigation system - see www.signiger.org. My Landrover 110 is now prepped and ready for the long trip ahead. After ... read more

It is useful to have a theme to guide your travels. The 'must see' list can be useful. Buildings, museums, food, villages or mountains are all good. Alcohol can be a very acceptable theme. For this leg, though, we are using family history. Three out of the four 'lines' of our respective families originated in the British Isles. Fortunately, a few of them came from places that we would have liked to visit anyway. Unfortunately, some of them left this part of the world, partly at least because they didn't like it much. You would have to punt, therefore, that some may not be high on the 'must see' lists. We sat down while we were in Brittany to work out precisely where we need to go and tried to plan a little where we might ... read more

Only a brief interrogation by the customs officer, putting down 60 day visit and local contact as NZ Embassy, London are not recommended. Not having an onward flight doesn't help, but I think he must of had a few Kiwi's who didn't really know what the're were up to over his time as an officer. He let me carry on through with a feeble excuse that I was going to catch the 'tunnel train' to france and fly home from there... Everything in England is so green, it looks really nice after the dirt of Africa and Sands of the Middle East. The trains and buses are really reliable, smooth and fast, but everything to do with travel is far more expensive, also takeaways and other necessities. Beer is reasonable tho, but everyone starts at the ... read more

We enjoy a nice hotel breakfast and then I buy a new camera this morning (Friday) at a nearby shop. We check out of the hotel, but "camp" in the hotel's pub/lounge where we watch World Cup soccer most of the day. I was able to do a little work and the boys taxied into old town to play soccer. In general, we all tried to get our internal clocks back to normal. Over the course of the day, the hotel lounge fills up with boisterous English fans who are very entertaining but end up being sorely disappointed with their team's showing. After the last game (9:30ish pm) we taxi to the ferry terminal to catch the overnight Stena Line ferry to Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland), The Netherlands. Wow! The ferry is a pretty ... read more

Hi everyone, Just a quick entry to let you know how I'm going. I haven't had much time at all to get on the net and connect with everyone... so i'm sorry to all those people who have sent messages without a reply. I'll be a bit better with the replies when i get back to Madrid and start my studies. The reason i have been a bit slack is because i have been on a tour. The tour started in London, then we went to Paris and then on to Amsterdam - it was 9 days in total, of which only about 30 hours was spent sleeping. Partying all night and then sight seeing all day. I met so many great people and had one of the best times of my life. I want to ... read more

Well hello! It seems a long time since I have been able to write my blog and tell you all about an exciting trip I am on or am having. Finally tomorrow I am off to India on a Northern highlights tour. After a week in Benidorm and Cornwall last year I am super excited about a trip further afield. This time I am going on my own but as it is an organised trip will meet other people when I am there. The highlights of the trip will include: * The Taj Mahal at Agra * Game drives in search of the elusive tiger at Ranthambore National Park * The spectacular Pink City of Jaipur * The Ganges at Varanasi. There is lots of travel invovled including two overnight sleeper trains but I can't wait ... read more

6 weeks and 1 day and counting... Finally Michael and I have booked tickets to fly to Brisbane on 11th March 2010 at 10:55am and I am VERY excited! We are travelling on a working holiday visa for hopefully a year or so. I finish work in Addenbrookes on 17th Febuary and then am doing a couple of weeks bank shifts / agency shifts before I go. Michael has currently got some part time work in Oundle to earn a few pennies to add to the bank balance. Main concerns at the moment are... 1) Lack of money, 2) Need to sell car asap 3) Am worried that I am going to get homesick 4) Am worried that we wont get work. However, I really dont care about any of those things too much as I ... read more
