The last two-and-a-half days have had a lot of ups and downs. Ups: Winchester Cathedral, joining a choir. Downs: Tough classes and getting sick. Classes are a lot different here, which has been making me anxious. I only have class Monday and Tuesday, though, which is nice. Tuesday I had European History: 1500-1789, from 9-11, and Print Media from 3-6. The lectures are a lot longer than I'm used to - two to three hours, only once a week - and the instructors expect a lot more pre-class reading and independent work. Every class has two major assignments - for mine, it's all writing assignments, 1500-3000 word papers - which is all we're graded on. For history, I have it with a bunch of other Americans, so it's nice to be confused together. Some days, we ... read more

Rather than going to London, then back to Suffolk, then back to Winchester, I dashed into Winchester for 10 hours one night to leave my stuff ready for my longer stay. Think it was a good plan, as the roads were pretty bad after the snow (why can the British not cope with a bit of snow - everything all goes wrong?!), and - surprisingly - my train ran on time, so I was in London in plenty of time. Some lovely views in the meantime.... read more

(This entry, Monday, is belated because my computer wasn't working all day, today...) An awesome, FUN night out on the town to follow up the rather boring day! We had international student orientation, forcing us to miss our Monday lectures, followed by a night out on the town. It was the "night of twos": two pubs, two nightclubs, two cute British boys, and two drinks. If you want more details (and some observations on English students at the end), read on… DAY (boring): Many of my friends and family know that I am not (at all) a morning person, so oversleeping this morning won’t come as a surprise to them. I had just enough time to shower and throw on some clothes before it was time to head down to “The Stripe” - which is the ... read more

It's been almost two days since my arrival, and I am loving this place already. Let me start at the beginning... Friday, February 2: My mom, sister and I drove to Fort to carpool to Chicago with Anna and her parents. We thought we'd be late, but of course we got to the airport several hours early. Checking in wasn't a problem...unless you count my 15-pounts-overweight luggage! I already knew I would have to pay the $50 fee, though, so it was OK. Much cheaper than shipping it all, I discovered when I called the post office. Besides, my beautiful hot-pink luggage (birthday present!) is heavy-duty and very heavy! Saying goodbye to Mom and Andrea got a little emotional - I hate goodbyes! I cried for this one, of course, but had also teared up when ... read more

One job quit, one to go! As of Thursday I am free of the desk and the office and the routine, free of the terrible train service and the cold faces of British commuters. And in two weeks time I will escape the long, dark nights and drizzle of England completely. African sunshine here I come! Warm faces, bright colours, bustling markets, exotic smells, wildlife, weird diseases, vivid larium dreams…!! Not that I want to make you all jealous of course! Internet connections permitting, (and anyone actually caring about my exploits), I will be keeping you all updated on my adventures through Africa…yes it’s a big place, and I plan to see as much of it as possible. I am travelling in a big yellow truck, from the UK to Cape Town, via lots of places ... read more

Merry Winterval! Its Christmas day so i probably shouldn't be playing on the internet, but i have eaten lots, drank lots and played with my xmas pressies so i decided to update the bog with the most recent plans.. The last few weeks have consisted of working lots and a series of xmas parties, including tom's xmas/leaving do and some rather eventful night out with work folk with liz's various work people (the beauty of having 3 jobs is that get three times the xmas fun). we have both gone home for xmas, tom to France and Liz to Winchester so catching up with people before we leave. Thanks to very generous friends and family our travelling equipment is coming together nicely and we now have tent/torch/snorkel/flippers (!) etc and are now prepared for all eventualities. ... read more

Train to Winchester Great to see Robyn again A quaint little town. I’ve been so lazy these past few days. Perhaps it is because I go to bed after midnight these days and then roll out of bed around 8:30/9:00. Today was no exception! But I did know I had to be out of the door sooner rather than later because I wanted to catch a morning train to Winchester. I was on the net last night and there really isn’t all that much to do there. I think that was one of the reasons for my lack of motivation to rush out and get an earlier train. I did know that it’s about 1 hour to Winchester by train and I definitely had to be there before 2:30PM. I must have left the house about ... read more
