Boy, did it ever feel good to get out of our stateroom, nice as it was. Even though the day after Dianne’s visit to Newcastle was an “at sea” day, at least I got to walk around the ship, visit the library/games room and stop at the ice cream stand. I was glad to have this day to rebuild my energy. It is amazing how tiring doing nothing can be. Portland One of the things I found strange was that even though the ship often docked in a port so we didn’t have to tender to shore, we often had to get on shuttle buses to get away from the ship because these are active port areas and they don’t want people milling about. There is a free shuttle bus that takes you to The Castle ... read more

We had completed our cat sitting on August 17th in Chichester and had another one to start on August 19th so had to find some place to stay for the evening of August 17th and 18th. Where do we go? We looked at the map and train schedules and found that Winchester looked like a good location. We didn’t find an Airbnb there, but found a hotel right in the center of town so plan was set. We didn’t know anything about Winchester but found it has a long history. It has been determined that the first permanent residents were during the Iron Age in 150 BC. The Romans then came and built the town in a grid pattern for their homes, shops and temples. In the 3rd C. the previously wooden walls were changed to ... read more

Miguel's last day but luckily his flight isn't until early evening, so we we have time to visit nearby Winchester. This city used to be the old capital of England before eventually London gaining the title, which later became the capital of the United Kingdom. The city of Winchester has a lot of history, dating back to the Iron Age around 150BC. The city structure changed a lot when under Roman rule and this saw expansion; however, the city's stature came when Alfred 'The Great' became ruler of the West Saxons as he and his brother defeated the Danish Vikings at the Battle of Ashdown and he became King of Wessex and established Winchester as his capital. I've written about Winchester previously in the Hosting Stefano blog, if you would like to read more about Winchester's ... read more

The plane ride was good, a picnic with complimentary wine and cheese and crackers that I’d brought were a great way to start the flight. After customs, we found the location of our bus ride to Winchester then found some Italian coffee to pass the 3 hours we had to wait. The bus ride would have been interesting if we would not have kept falling asleep. We arrived in downtown Winchester, hopped into a cab and went to our hotel. We wanted to go to dinner in downtown Winchester but couldn’t find the wherewithal to leave so ate at the hotel restaurant. This was actually a good choice as the food was good and gluten-free. The buffet breakfast had lots of choices so we could fill up on food that would last for several hours. We ... read more

After witnessing yesterday‘s epic traffic/gridlock at Waterloo Bridge, my brain would simply NOT shut off during the night, trying to calculate the best way for me to catch this morning’s train to Winchester. Every mode had risks: the Tube involved carrying my large, heavy case on stairs at each end, all surface-modes involved rush hour. So, after about three hours’ sleep, I showered, packed up, woke Fae for a hug, and took off for Waterloo Station at dawn. Naturally, I caught the first bus and arrived a ridiculous two hours early. However, I made the most of my time, ensconcing myself at a luxury mezzanine cafe, enjoying Eggs Florentine and a latte while watching the mayhem on the station floor below.... Tonight I’m in a cozy Air BnB room near the rail station, and have spent ... read more

Hi travel followers/lovers. We finally got a free day (raining and miserable outside) to start updating everyone on our UK adventures. After leaving Martinstown and after we finished our first UK house sit, we had 4 days to tour the south west coast of Cornwall, England. We travelled from Martinstown to Polperro via Lyme Regis, Sidmouth and Plymouth. All lovely towns, BUT I must say Polperro has to take the win for the most beautiful little cove we have seen to date. We stayed the night at Milly's B&B after walking to the Smugglers Cove , but the weather was a bit crook so we waited it out in front of the fire with a couple of "Pimms & Ginger ales" in the Three Pilchards Inn while overlooking the harbour. Just one of those spots and ... read more

Visit to Winchester Mark took a day off on Friday, 5 March 2014, and treated me to visit Winchester. We had lunch at the Chinese Restaurant near the station. Then, we headed for the Cathedral via the High Street. After paying the admission fees, we started strolling through the inside of the Cathedral, found the medieval nave, 12th century font, Jane Austen’s grave, the great screen, monuments of celebrities including William Walker, choir stalls with ornate carvings with the theme of a lively enchanted forest, the fishermen’s chapel, and looked round the library and Triforium Gallery. We saw the priceless Winchester Bible and a number of beautiful illustrated books in the library and fragments of the old monuments including the tomb of St Swithum. The highlights include the Norman Crypt situated beneath the east end of ... read more

We chose to stay closer to Basingstoke this day, and visit Winchester. What a beautiful little place! We strolled around the streets and saw all the sights. We went to lunch at the Royal Oak pub, which was very good. They had a lunch special that we all got, which was a sandwich, chips, and a drink. I had duck on a baguette and a beer. After lunch we walked around for another few hours and then drove back to Basingstoke. Our friend's husband had to work this day and we went back to meet him and the kids. He works for the Lord of Portsmouth, so we met him at the property for a little tour.... read more

England Segment Winchester Aug 19 – 22 We took the Heathrow Express to Paddington then the Bakerloo to Waterloo Station. After fumbling around a bit to validate our train ticket I noticed that the ticket was good for anytime that day. After Ross verified that we caught the very next train that left in 9 minutes. Saved us an hour or more waiting and it was a direct train. We had a late lunch at Porterhouse and then taxied to Giffard House B&B. Very nice place – we have a huge room with 2 bathrooms. We went walking and most things were closed as it was Sunday. Bed early. Monday was spent walking, shopping, sightseeing and shopping. Excellent lunch at Ginger Two and a bargain dinner at The Slug and Lettuce. Tuesday we rented bicycles and ... read more
