If she new how good I was doing about keeping clean. It's frustrating that there is no place to keep anything though. No counter space in the bathroom is driving me crazy! And there isn't and outlet in there either, so I had to blow dry my hair in the kitchen. Oh well. It's crazy that we leave the windows open all the time, no screens and there are no bugs, I love that! Andrew took me on a little walking tour of the local area since he has been here for a while and I bought some post cards, now I just have to find a post office. London is so beautiful. Way better than New York! Just the entire feel of it. Hamley's is the giant toy store and there was a man dressed ... read more

Currently I am waiting at my hostel in London after spending two days in the spectacularly impressive (sights and prices!) city. The last blog post was all fluffy and warm and everything was roses. Oh how quickly the tide can change. Upon arrival in Madrid my wallet was promptly stolen as me and Shannon crammed onto a crowded bus strapped down by our bags. We thought we were going to have it easy as the tram line went straight to our hostel, but no such luck as construction halted tram services exactly from where we were to where we were going. So it was onto a transfer bus were a few stops in I reached in my pocket and felt it a bit light. It was my front pocket but the shorts were a bit ... read more

It rains a lot in London, even in the summer time. Most of my days here have had some kind of rain, either a huge downpour or just an on-and-off drizzle. While the first day of rain drove me indoors, it is hard to discover the city when you're cooped up in your flat. Make sure an umbrella is on your packing list if you're ever going to come out to the UK - I never leave without mine. On one of my free days last week, I set out to have myself a literary day. I wanted to go to the Charles Dickens museum and walk around in the neighborhood that inspired him to write some of his classics - namely, Oliver Twist. I've actually only read three of his books (David Copperfield, Great Expectations ... read more

Okay so, I'm not great at the blogging thing but I'm giving it a go! I suppose my order will work backward because this site doesn't have Milan yet (where i started.) Today we traveled from Paris to London on the Eurostar high speed train which took us through the Chunnel. As exciting as it was it made for a nice nap! We were out of the Chunnel in 20 minutes and the whole train ride took just over 2 hours! It got over 200 mph but it was much smoother and nicer than the last train we took. When we got to london we were met by FSU study center staff. They gave us our Oyster Cards in Ikea envelopes (apparently Ikea sponsors The Underground in some way.) These cards act as debt cards in ... read more

In the last five days I've been to a play, an operetta, a music festival, one of the hippest nightclubs in London (or so I've been told), and a culture celebration. The arts aspect of London is one that I'm keen on learning more about. Lets squash all of those adventures into one, shall we? 1. That Face. A play by a young playwright who wrote the piece when she was 19 years old. It's about the destruction of a nuclear family when the father leaves and the mother drowns her sorrows in alcohol and Valium. This was one of the assigned pieces we had to see for Reporting the Arts, so I'll be sure to post the review I write about it in here once it gets graded. There were aspects that I liked, and ... read more

I guess it's time for me to bring up the main reason why I came to London this summer.... to take classes. I needed to take 8 units over the summer to guarantee that I will be indeed graduating come May 2009, and I wanted the chance to study abroad as part of my education, so this program seemed like a good fit. So far, it's a great fit! I started my classes on Tuesday: Travel Writing with Professor Goldfarb and Reporting the Arts with Professor Sierz. Travel Writing is going to be a very "sense oriented" class, where we write with our feelings and emotions instead of writing hard news pieces. It's been a while since I've done any creative writing, so we'll see how that goes. Goldfarb stressed the importance of writing with our ... read more

The wonderful thing about my class schedule while I'm over here is that I only have classes on Tuesday/Thursday, so I have a great amount of free time to explore and do things without a time constraint. The one bad thing about my schedule is that most students are Monday through Thursday students, leaving them half of the day in the classroom and the other half of free time. I did meet one girl, Meagan, who has the same schedule as me, but she decided to switch one of her classes around...so it looks like I'll be doing a lot of things on my own on the days that I'm free while others are in class. Classes officially started on Monday, but because I'm a Tuesday/Thursday girl I had the whole day at my disposal. Once ... read more

Sitting on my cute little yellow bed, listening to Coldplay, with the London Daily Telegraph sprawled out across my lap. Am I an Anglophile yet? Perhaps. So, I'm very determined to get caught up with each of my little adventures before I get too caught up in my school work, which actually seems like it's gonna be pretty time consuming. Boo. Except for its all writing projects that sound fantastic. Not so boo. Sunday was another program orientation day. All of the journalism students congregated in the courtyard of our building to make the 30 minute trek down to campus together. Our house, Kamen House, is in the Clerkenwell district of London, while the NYU London Mansion known as 6 Bedford Square is in Bloomsbury, near the British Museum. It's a nice walk of a little ... read more

Hello all! After roughly 6 months of anticipation and planning, I've finally arrived in London! I got here a few days ago, on Saturday, and have been keeping myself pretty busy... what with getting settled and familiarizing myself with an extraordinary new city. So. Saturday. I stumble off the plane at Heathrow Airport at 11:00am London time (3am California time), and after being on two different flights totaling 13 hours of travel time I had only one thing on my mind: STARBUCKS. Then a frightening thought crossed my mind that Starbucks might not even exist across the pond (but it does as I soon found out), so I settled for something called Costa coffee instead. Quite delicious. Anyways, I took the Heathrow Express train from the airport to Paddington station in central London. As we zipped ... read more
