Today I took a trip to Bath. What can I say, it was an amazing experience. The city has so much history and places to visit. I choose four places and enjoyed everyone of them, saving the best for last. Once again, I got a ticket on the hop-on hop-off bus, easiest way to get around. My first stop was a Georgian set of town houses build in the mid to late 18th century. One of those house has been undergoing renovations to makes it's rooms appears as they might have back in the late 18th century. The rooms that they have opened to the public are: dinning room, study, salon and bedroom. They have a kitchen museum in the basement, but are currently working on reconstructing the original kitchens. It is a beautiful house and ... read more

Today was an extremely busy day, but a very good day. I spent the day in central London, specifically in and around Whitehall. The plan was to see as many of the sites around that street as humanly possible in one day. I managed four of them, but it wasn't from a lack of trying. On my list of sites for the day I had them listed in order of close, so that I could save the later ones, well for later. Unfortunately, after repeated attempts I wasn't able to find the Guard Museum, which I wasn't happy about. My next stop was going to be the Household Cavalry Museum, but when I tried in the morning, it was blocked off...found out later why. So, I turned my attention the one museum on this street that ... read more

Today was an extremely busy day. I went from London to Hampton Court and back to London again. My day started with a train trip to Hampton Court, the home of Henry VIII. It is a very beautiful place and the history is unbelievable. The last monarch to live there was George II and he wasn't there for long. The Palace is broken up into three sections: Henry VIII; King William III and Queen Mary II; and the Georgian part of the palace. The stain glass windows in the Henry VIII part are amazing. There is a large room that would in today's standards be called a dinning room, that only has stain glass windows. In one of the windows I saw the image of Henry VIII. The ceilings in every room are huge and usually ... read more

Today I went to the Tower of London. I knew that it was a fortification that was started by William the Conqueror, but I wasn't prepared for what it really is. I for some reason, always thought that it was literally a tower, and it's not. It's a castle. And, it's huge. It's this amazing old building with loads of history. It has many areas that were built in different centuries, some that still stand were dated as far back as the 1200s, which is really neat. The stairs though in many of the buildings are so narrow and small that it made me wonder what kind of feet people had back in the day. I stood on the spot where many a prisoner, including Ann Boleyn, lost their lives, via beheadings. It's marked with a ... read more

Today I went to Windsor and Oxford, two of the most influencial cities in the UK, but for different reasons. One is a Royal Castle, that the current Queen has said is her favourite home and the other is a place where people from around the world are educated. Some of those people have gone on to make a difference in the world in many different fields. One of the things that they both have in common is very old buildings. Windsor Castle is what you'd expect a castle to look like. It sits above the city and you have to climb a winding and sometimes still road to get to it, going up. Of course, like any other modern tourist attraction, is has caused the growth of shops and restaurants along the road up to ... read more

The second part of my day was a trip to Oxford. This is one of the world's leading universities. Over the years it has turned out British Prime Ministers and other world leaders. It has also been where famous writers, artists, doctors, lawyers and other professionals have been trained. it has been the location of hire education for hundreds of years. The some of the buildings in the city are extremely old and others are roughly a century old or a little more. I took a hop-on hop-off bus tour around the city and did actually go into any of the colleges. The college grounds are restricted at certain times of the year and the day I chose to visit, they were having a graduation ceremony. The grounds were packed with family and friends and graduates. ... read more

Today I walked, and walked and then walked some more. It was a day of walking, but a good day. I did a lot of stuff in a rather short period of time. My day start with a trip to Apsley House, which is the home of the Duke of Wellington. The first Duke, who was the guy who beat Napoleon, bought the house from his older brother. The house originally belonged to the Baron of Aspley, hence the name. It was built in the late 1700s and became Wellington's home in the 1800s. The house was given over to the "people" after World War II by the family. They have many rooms with the original furnishings and wall treatments set up for people to walk through. The tour begins in the display room. This room ... read more

Day 10: A Mixed day Today I took the river cruise to Greenwich. I should mention before I begin that before coming to England one of the first "day trips" I had planned was Greenwich. I had been looking forward to seeing the Maritime Museum, the Prime Meridian and Greenwich. Unfortunately, I found Greenwich to be disappointing. The National Maritime Museum is being renovated, so much of their displays on the 2nd and 3rd floors are closed to the public. The Cutty Sark is still being repaired since the devastating fire in 2007, but that I knew prior to going to England. I had been so looking forward to seeing the Sark and was disappointed to read that they'd pushed the re-launch date to spring 2012. After leaving the National Maritime Museum (mainly because the fire ... read more

Day 11: Touring London by Bus Today I took an open-top tour bus tour around the city of London. As the British would say, it was brilliant. It was unbelievable. We went through so many different areas of the city. I saw so many old buildings, from the 17th century through to the 19th century. It's amazing how you can move from one section of the city into another one and you'll see buildings from different periods up to and including ones currently under constructions. We went through Kensington, Paddington, Chelsey, Mayfair and Knightsbridge just to name a few. It was nice to see areas that I had only heard or read about in books. I even went over London bridge (and no it wasn't falling down). To think that someone thought about that back in ... read more
