There is literally no good way to start a blog because nobody gives a shit about the first post. Nobody will read it, except for maybe us in 5 months time when we're really drunk and have no trip to Europe to obsess over. So there are few things that should be outlined before we actually get into writing about the trip. 1. This blog is not going to be about 'shimmering cities' or detailed analysis of cultures. We will not be 'deeply immersing ourselves within a sea of local customs and traditions'. We will not be deciding what countries are our favorite based on the number of times we can stop and take pictures of churches and old walls. We will not enjoy getting up at 6am to get the first fresh loaf of bread ... read more

For those who I haven't managed to speak to I regret to inform you that my father passed away on the 28th December. Although his prognosis had not been good his death still came as a shock to the whole family. The only comfort Joy and I can draw from this tragic event is that we managed to get back from India in time and spend a few precious weeks with him. He was a very brave man and remained dignified until the end. We stayed in Wrexham with my mother until after the funeral and then returned to Exmouth in mid January. Since then we have had plenty of time to reflect and think about the future. Although my father was very pleased to see us when we returned from India, and we spent many ... read more

The last few weeks have been absolutely manic. We have been rushed off our feet with last minute preparations, whilst at the same time attending numerous farewell parties and continuing to work up to the last minute. Saying our goodbyes has left us with mixed emotions. We feel sad to be leaving our family and friends but at the same time we are incredibly excited about the trip we are about to embark on. I have no doubt that our journey will be a life changing experience for both of us and will mark a new chapter in our lives. D Day is Sunday June 29th and come rain or shine we will set off on that day from Wrexham in N Wales. On the map it looks all down hill all the way to Dover ... read more

We had a tough 6 hour drive down to Devon in terrible weather. It was our first real experience of traffic jams on British motorways since we got back. Very unpleasant!! Our week in the village of Thorverton, near Exeter, Devon, was both relaxing and hectic. With new nephew William to welcome into the family plus Jack (4), Bryony (5) and Kaitlyn (7) to keep us occupied, we were pleased to be house-sitting for a friend of the family. The peace and quiet saved our sanity!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t get me wrong, it was great to see them but it made us realise what a good decision it was not have kids of our own!!!!! The weather wasn’t great a lot of the time but we still managed to get out and about. We had a wonderful afternoon ... read more

Well only 34 days to go before we set off on our trip. Obviously things are hectic at the moment as we finalise things but at least we can now see light at the end of the tunnel - at long last. Although this trip has been our dream for the last 5 years the reality of what we are about to embark on has only really hit us over the last few months. People have asked us if we are looking forward to our holiday! This trip however is not really a holiday. Not knowing where you are going to sleep each night cannot exactly be classed as a normal holiday. Likewise, being on the road for over a year will be both a physical and mental challenge. Nevertheless we are both up for the ... read more
