Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

We left home very early in the morning and drove down to Cornwall. We arrived at Tintagel by 10am. It was beautiful, but very very windy. After walking around the ruins we stopped for juice and ice cream before carrying on to Penzance. We had a bit of a rest, then headed to town in the rain and visited the shops for some last supplies, had lunch in the pub and walked around a few art shows. By the time we had dried off everyone else had arrived and so we all went for dinner at The Lugger pub. The weather [View Full Entry]

I have recently returned from a holiday in Padstow, Cornwall. Although I have been there before I had forgotten just how relaxed and quaint Padstow is. Hubby and I took our bikes so that we could ride along the well known 'Camel Trail' which passed right along the bottom of our holiday accommodation. I have a dodgy knee but managed to cycle all the way to Wadebridge and straight back again. It was lovely not having to worry about vehicles of any kind. The only only nuisance was that dog owners did not put their mutts on a lead so dogs [View Full Entry]

Why sit at home, when you can be out there getting yourself aching legs and hurting feet? K and I first went to explore the local camping site, which turned out to be like a perfectly tended English garden. The lawn was cut with scissors, and the hedges were shaped using razorblades, at least it looked that way. The site was nearly empty since the tourist season hasn’t really begun yet. But if you want to camp with a great ocean view, this is the place! An older man with a walking stick, who seemed to have walked the Cornish paths [View Full Entry]

A beach in sight. Maybe we can go swimming?
Why don’t become a postcard photographer, when I’m at it?
“Well, I won’t go in the water!”

Monday 30 June 2008 First day at school. You are always a little bit wary of how the group is going to work together. Any weirdo’s? Any boring people? Besserwissers? But no, oh no, everyone in the group turned out to be very nice and friendly people, representing Germany, Norway and Sweden. We are nicely led by K and G, and there are a lot of opportunities to practice English conversation in this little group, which is exactly what I’m looking for. This is going to be great! In the afternoon K and I went for a walk around the village. [View Full Entry]

Not a bad view coming from a school window.
Lots of blue.
Shot through a “window” in the ruin of Polruan Blockhouse at the mouth of the Fowey river.

The travel day became what we’d expected. A lot of mishaps, but we finally did get to Cornwall nearly on time. Our flight from Skavsta was late (of course), and none of the baggage from our plane arriving Stansted “could be located” as an airport attendant put it. We waited for 45 minutes and then we got lucky after all. One of the passenger noticed, by a coincidence, that the baggage had turned up on the belt marked “Barcelona”. Nobody from the airport seemed to know that, though. So, we found our bags, and we still had a chance to catch [View Full Entry]

Hope you all enjoyed the fruits of my new camera. As you know have had super weather beaching, enjoyed seeing everyone I wanted to see and visited places last seen in1989 on honeymoon.Eden has proved stimulating and I have done 2 zipwire rides incl carrying down mulled wine for Dave Saunders on the last one. The only blip--no molehill has been on Sunday when I was returning from the show jumping day at Launceston. On the way back I thought the clutch might be slipping but waited till later to check.Definately a problem and when Dave got home I mentioned it to [View Full Entry]

Thursday Doug and I slept in and then relaxed on Castle Beach until the tide came in. I collected lots of shells you wouldn't find on California beaches, and we did a little shopping for gifts to bring home. For dinner we went to a Thai restaurant that turned out to be pretty good. I wasn't sure if I would like Thai but it seemed a lot like Chinese food but spicier. Around 10pm we went out with my cousin Martin and his girlfriend Leah to check out the local pubs in Falmouth. We went to the Chain Locker next door [View Full Entry]

On Tuesday we visited Trebah Gardens. It's a tropical garden that starts at the top of a hill and winds all the way down to a little beach at the bottom. We poked around all the little meandering paths through all kinds of plants - palms, bamboo, huge elephant ears, foxgloves, and ferns. Everything is so green compared to home where it is all brown and dead at the moment. So many wildflowers grow naturally here, like foxgloves. I had to plant them in my garden, I wish they grew naturally like that! In the evening we went out to dinner [View Full Entry]
