Heading away from the legend of King Arthur and the tacky tourist stuff that accompanies him. It cost £20 to enter and really most of the complex is in ruins except for the new bridge which is spectacular and the ‘Arthurian’ sculpture that we glimpsed from afar. We were lucky to get so close to the bridge and that was only because we were early and the ticket booth had not opened. We just went in until they came then obviously left. There was a small grass fire right on the path which the fire fighters were busy making safe and putting out. We thought it quite insignificant but you can see smoke in some of the photos and the smoke was clearly visible for miles (literally) and even the day after it was still visible ... read more

King Arthur you have much to answer for. From ‘Excalibur’ plastic swords and plywood crossbows the streets here are alive with tacky tourist souvenirs that scream a crossover between English legend and Chinese cheapness. Despite our expectations our meals here were very good. Thankfully we steered clear of the King Arthur’s Arms and found a pub that had good beer and good food. Thinking that vegetables would be a foreign word here we were pleasantly surprised despite the fact I ordered a 3 meat dish. I had a good carrot (aren’t all carrots at least good), some good roast potatoes (aren’t all roast potatoes at least good) and some red and green cabbage. Cauliflower gratin was meant to accompany the meal but… The pork, beef and lamb roast were tender, succulent and quite delicious and the ... read more

Near Boscastle anyway. Tomorrow we walk through Boscastle so that’s as close as the blog knows. Bude to Crackington Haven was meant to be a bit shorter and a bit easier but it did not feel it. Certainly we finished before 4 o’clock but the walk was quite tiring and quite demanding. It’s taken 2 icy-poles and a swim to recover. We are in the local pub but things are busy here, we’ e met other walkers who could not find accommodation here and have had to catch a bus and/or taxi out to find accommodation somewhere. We know we pay for the service and that the prices have risen considerably over the years but that service has been dependable and gives us much peace of mind. The pub here is old but obviously some sections ... read more

No longer do I need to take photos of English showers and ask a NASA graduate to interpret the buttons, switches, knobs and dials! They all seem to work now. Some have been really good, strong pressure and almost infinitely adjustable. The only grumble is that with some you can not get just cold water. I always attempt a cold shower for my legs because it’s good for them but it’s not always possible. But we’ll done England your showers have improved immeasurably. But they are still small! I didn’t have enough room in the shower for my cold bottle of cider. Bigger problem than it sounds! Even Julie has knocked over half a pint before shower time, that’s an indication of how how tough today was. The elevation gain was almost 1500 m. Assuming a ... read more

After a surprisingly good night's near Boscastle Harbour I woke up to a colourful sunrise introducing another day of unbroken sunshine. It was a short easy walk along the cliffs to Tinatgel where I treated myself to a night at the Headland Campsite. Most campsites seem to offer a reasonable rate for walkers, but not here. After two long days and the beginnings of a blister I really wanted a short day, so I paid up. It was a lovely campsite, with very friendly staff, just expensive for a solo walker. Tintagel was bigger than I had expected and was as thronged with holiday makers as I had expected on such a fine day. After exploring the town, I enjoyed a couple of pints of Sea Fury in the Tintagel Arms hotel. Later in early evening ... read more

Hi Everyone again The weather here has picked up and I think it’s going to be lovely for our last week in Devon. We drove down to a place called Buckfastleigh not far from Plymouth to board a steam train which took us to a place called Totnes. It only goes for 7miles but it was fun,at Totnes theyhave a rare breed farm which we didn’t go to,but a guy from there at }the railway station Had a beautiful Siberian owl on his arm showing us all. And of course they had a rail shop and old carriages ect, which Kevin loved. Today we went to Cornwall to a fishing village called Polperro within the Polperro heritage coastline in south Cornwall. It is a noted tourist destination particularly in summer months, for its idyllic appearance with tightly packed ... read more

After breakfast and the usual meandering in an attempt to get out of a town with no exits, we headed north across the Cornwall peninsula to Tintagel Castle. Growing up, I was very aware of two myth/legend traditions from England - King Arthur and Robin Hood. I won't cover much on Robin Hood here, since his stomping grounds were far to the northeast of Cornwall. There is little evidence of an historic Robin Hood, although he has been a stock character in English literature and other arts since the Piers Plowman poem written in the 1370's. The well-known attribute of stealing from the rich to give to the poor appears to be a later concept. Perhaps we shall get back to him later. For now, we shall focus on King Arthur. Things are somewhat different for ... read more

With spending a lot of money on home improvements we had decided no holidays for this year but, after a year since our last break, I felt I needed a few days away somewhere. Fiona's two older children were away with their dad meaning that we could find a reasonable B&B room somewhere for just the three of us. I suggest a few days in Cornwall, so that I could meet with my childhood friend, Sally. My friend would have possibly been able to host us, but she felt her home was unsafe for my 2-year-old daughter, Jovie, given she was having some renovation work done to her property. My friend lives in Bodmin, which is in the middle of the county of Cornwall and not such a demand for the hospitality industry as most people ... read more

Yesterday started off well. We walked into Padstow and I had a day at Rick Stein's cookery school. I have done a cooking class there before but this time due to the pandemic it was a tad different. You were not allowed to leave your work station without wearing a mask. You had to see most of the things the Chef was telling you via a screen which if I am honest 2 rows back and one dodgy cataract it was a little difficult. To be honest though if two people from the same family went they shared a work station and also shared a fish so not great value, or chance to try stuff. So the first dish was Dover Sole a la meunière which if you remember in one of my blogs I had ... read more
