Sorry for the long time between entries, but while in LA the hostel computers wouldn't let me access this site and since being in England I've been getting over jetlag! I've been a tad disappointed with the weather here, generally cool and rainy/cloudy most days. But I've still been out and about. Been to London twice to catch the sights - Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park. Very cool. But the exchange rate for the NZ dollar is so scary I'm literally counting every penny I spend! I'm off to Poland next week, so it will be nice to be somewhere that the NZ$ is in a reasonably good position! I feel very safe here compared to the states, I'm not sure why as there are far more people and thus more chance of banging into ... read more

Making storming progress despite the rain. Cycled 86 miles yesterday from Saffron Walden in Cambridgeshire to Beaconsfield and scampered up three hills, including the lovely Dunstable Downs, in between. So that takes the current grand total to 13 in nine days. Plan to be in Bristol by Tuesday which will make 17 in 11 days - so good going. That pace will slow though in the north, Wales and Scotland as the hills become mountains and the distances in between grow. ... read more

So guys, this is it!!! After the rounds of, "really?! but why?!", erasmus sign-up pitfalls, semester overlaps, passport stress and of course the still non-existent accomodation, i'm off to Spain in under a fortnight. For those who have lived the last year sticking their fingers in their ears whenever i'm around, I'm off for 5 months of studying English Lit at the University in Zaragoza. I still can't pinpoint exactly why - because i could and the idea was random enough to appeal? because i want to become bilingual before i'm 30? because i love sangria and was told the fags would be cheap (I'm talking cigarettes here mike)?! Hopefully this blog can let you all know what I'm up to, show you pictures without clogging your inboxes, remind you all that I am only a ... read more

Finances = Green Fitness = Red Relationship = Green Arguments = Zero (& “no” David, we didn’t go opposite ways around!) Well, here we are. After 12 weeks in the Southern Hemisphere we finally crossed the equator and moved back into the Northern Hemisphere on our way to Miami. (Can I just mention the breakfast on our American Airlines flight from Rio to Miami? What are we supposed to do with a bread roll and no butter, jam or equivalent spread? It was appalling. And we also had to purchase alcohol. We are never travelling AA again!!!!) But despite our lack of breakfast we arrived in Miami at 5 in the morning to 20-degree heat. Luckily the car we picked up had air conditioning and we were soon heading towards our (luxurious and last) hotel on ... read more

I just came back from an adventure to the United Kingdom. I was teaching in a small town called Bedford, England. As you will see on the pics in my photo album, Bedford is a beautiful and peaceful place. Population of 75 thousand. I lived in Bedford for five months teaching primary school in a school. While I was in England I went to visit London about four times. I also took a 1 week solo train trip to visit Liverpool, England, Home of the BEATLES. I spent three nights in Liverpool and had a blast! I got to see most of the sights including the Beatles Museum. I took the train up to Edinburgh, Scotland and got to walk the Royal Mile. I then took a day trip up the Scottish Highlands and got ... read more

Firstly, thanks Martin for telling me about Travelblog, we're going to try it out with our first journal entry about the BBQ. It does mean that Travelblog now records our trip as starting in LB - a lovely location but not as exotic as we would have liked it to be! Anyway, thank you to everyone who came to our BBQ, an even bigger thank you to those who brought us cards and gifts and finally a HUGE thank you to those who helped in preparing food, gardens, lights etc etc. We had a really great time, hopefully you all did too, It was a shame about the weather (especially as the following day was really hot and sunny!). Talking of the following day, we did do the St Albans bike ride. We're really proud of ... read more

What is it about me that unmistakably give people the impression that I’m a bearer of all information that is needed in order to satisfy their needs? Ok, I admit, I don’t mind this epithet. In fact, I seek it and honor it. But, what make complete strangers single me out of a crowd and request me for information? A mystery. Getting off the bus in central Luton on a Thursday evening. Have never been to the city. Don’t know a soul there. Don’t have a map. All I know about the city is an address to a Bed and Breakfast. The streets are pretty empty. I chose a direction, and start walking on random. After having spent less than five minutes in this for me completely unknown city, a man walks up to me and ... read more
