Background: The Swiss Confederation was founded in 1291 as a defensive alliance among three cantons. In succeeding years, other localities joined the original three. The Swiss Confederation secured its independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499. Switzerland's sovreignty and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers, and the country was not involved in either of the two World Wars. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, has strengthened Switzerland's ties with its neighbors. However, the country did not officially become a UN member until 2002. Switzerland remains active in many UN and international organizations, but retains a strong commitment to neutrality.

Even the nice police at the border didn’t pick up that we didn’t have the pass on our car. Anyway, nothing happened, so we got the cheapest drive through Switzerland of any tourists this [View Full Entry]

Vienna is particularly beautiful during the advent season, which the Austrians celebrate in a relaxed, family-oriented way. Everything is decorated for the season; the cobbled streets of the old town are framed by christmas lights that crisscross between the buildings, and alpine-style huts spring up everywhere to sell Lebkuchen (soft gi [View Full Entry]

Hello Reader. For dinner the other night I went to a restaurant called Manora. My guidebook recommended this two floor buffet style restaurant. I went in, it was mostly self-explanitory, a kind local explained the pasta station. I collect all the ingridients myself, hand them to the pasta guy, and presto, my personalized pasta is prepared. I grabbed a bowl and piled it high, I handed the bowl to the guy. An uproar of laughter followed. He held up my bowl and shouted something in German to the salad bar attendant, who then started laughing, and then shouted something to the [View Full Entry]
