Our one full day in this beautiful tranquil place started in wet, cold blah. So, instead of the large long hike to the waterfalls, we decided to do a small hike to the next city called Murren (the closest bank machine and grocery store). It was a short 45min walk uphill. Ruthy and Tuua joined us. We passed very few people, the view of the valley was a blanket of mist shrowding everything, the mountains occasionally peaked through the cloud. All of us were in rain gear (for me it was a 99cent poncho that resembled a clear garbage bag). We poked into the stores down what must have been the main street and eventually headed back down to Gimmelwald. The rain came down harder but the cows we passed didn't seem to mind. They just ... read more

Murren, Switzerland Kate Gamble Dickman is my go-to travel girl. A friend from high school, she’s traveled extensively throughout Europe and has been spot on when I need some advice on where the heck to go when “I want a place where I can cook”, or “somewhere near the water”, or “I want a place with outdoor exercise, not hot and crowded and I can read a book”. She had mentioned the Swiss Alps in one of her emails, so with her description, and the fact that I’ve always wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog, here I am in the Berner Oberland. In this small town (about 500 people) called Murren you can hike, hang out and drink a beer outside while enjoying the scenery and reading your book. This ranks in my top three places on ... read more

i couldn't help the cheesy title. forgive me. so, i have to say at this moment, being a week from home, my favorite city was either venice or florence. but, the most beautiful thing i have seen in nature has been this. as soon as we got off the train i litrally lost my breath. the mountains didn't look real, i had heard about the snow, and seen pictures, even great photographers like ansel adams and i was still not prepared for what i was seeing. it took me a bit to realize that everything that was before me was created from a small shift, tiny moment in the plates of the earth created the most amazing landscape i have ever seen. i have taken trips and seen the ocean, the forest, the valleys of mexico, ... read more

Well let me just start off by saying I am glad we didnt start out going to Switzerland otherwise our entire trip would have failed in comparison, it was so incredible!!! Getting there from Venice.... well lets just say throwing up 10 times on the flight to London was more fun. Ok no it wasnt that bad, but after our day trip to Verona, we took a night train to Venice. It was second class, and 6 beds in a REALLY small compartment, three on each side. We were sharing with 3 other Canadians our age, so that was good. I volunteered to take the top bunk and regretted my decision almost immediately. It was cramped and 20 degrees hotter up there than the bunk below me. The whole night I kept putting my hand down ... read more

Well its about time that I (James) shared some of the blogging workload, however, please note that my editing skills are not quite as refined as Tania's. After the thrilling hights of skydiving the day before, we decided a quiet walk into the swiss alps was in order. We took a train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, then a bus to a small town (Cant remember the name), where we jumped on a cable car to the scenic (and very high up) town of Gimmelwald. Not so good for those with a fear of hights, or a fear of cable cars. The scenery was incredible, with views of snow capped mountains, sheer cliff faces, and green meadows. Nestled within the area was the village, with houses probably unchanged for a few hundred years, and an atmosphere as ... read more

Sorry, it's been awhile. Switzerland was extremely expensive and we couldn't find any internet point that doesn't cost a day's food budget. Anyway, the Alps was amazing. Bern and Luzerne were a little of a disappointment. They both have medieval buildings and storefronts, Luzerne scored a point because most of its old town is pedestrianised, but Bern has its blue Aare river which was oh, so inviting when we visited because it was boiling hot that day. We saw some locals jumped from a bridge into the fast moving river and Chris was tempted to do the same. But he changed his mind in the end (lack of proper swimwear, or so he said.) Fast forward to the mountain. We didn't do the Jungfraujoch trip because it was so touristy (and mostly no money). I always ... read more

Switzerland is a trip man..The scenic beatuy is the amazing thing i've ever seen anywhere. I headed up into the alps past interlaken and took cable cars around to different villages. The best of these is the 150 person town of Gimmelwald. Here you see villages living like they always have raising cattle and growing hay. The views are unbeatable and the swiss are very nice people. On the other hand prices are so high in this country it's actually comical. Like coffie and a muffen costs 7 US dollars or so. A half liter soda is 3 dollars. The answer: don't buy anything and just enjoy the view.... read more

Yes! Gimmelwald must be one of the most beautiful places on earth. The songs of birds, the sound of brooks and all this natural beauty leave one awestruck. It has been said "When I die, if Heaven isn't what it's cracked up to be, send me back to Gimmelwald" - true enough. We made our way into the heart of the Swiss Alps. After a stop in Interlaken, we rode a gondola lift up to traffic-free Gimmelwald and sleept in our creaky old chalet - Pension Gimmelwald. Next day we took a ride up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet and hiked part way down. For more Alpine thrills, we took hikes to the foot of the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks. Back at the chalet, we had fondue for dinner.... read more
