After a minimal breakfast, we headed towards the Tourist Information Office in the Hauptbahnhof railway station to see about a day pass for transport. When we told the lady there that we wanted to take the trian to the Uetliberg scenic overlook, take a short lake cruise, and ride the trams around town some, she was kind enough to explain the system and recommend a day transport pass for 17 CHFs that would cover all that at no additional cost. We bought the two passes and soon found the platform for the S10 train to Uetliberg and were on our way. The train passes underground a bit, then starts heading out of town and soon uphill. Half way there, when we stopped at a stop, about 10 or 12 little kids, like 5 or 6 years ... read more

We packed up, had our normal hostel breakfast, and hit the road again, this time heading to Zurich, Switzerland. This time not only did we not have many tunnels, and no long ones, but about half the trip we beside the beautiful Lake Zurich. My wife was trying to take photos every few minutes! As usual, the roads were good and there was little traffic, so we arrived in Zurich by a little after 10am. Unlike the last two times, we had no problems with the route the car's navigation system came up with, but this time the hostel was on a back street with no apparent parking nearby. We ended up going back across the bridge to a place we'd passed with metered parking and a few open spots. We pulled into one, put 3 ... read more

Our leaving GaPa to make our train connections today nearly didn't happen. We had stood around waiting for half and hour for our train to leave thinking that we were waiting for another train. A couple turned up one minute before leaving time with their bikes and we thought they were cutting it fine before realising that was our train! We moved fairly quickly to get on board just in time. The signs were confusing - well, that is our excuse. On a later train, we got on the back carriage which was being dropped off to another destination. That could have been interesting! Fortunately, the guard checked everyone and moved us out. We said good bye to GaPa at 10.00am and headed across southern Germany using a Bavarian ticket on regional trains. A Bavarian Ticket ... read more

After some discussion last night on possibilities for today, we decided to visit Bad Ragaz and the Tamina Gorge. What a great choice it was. Bad Ragaz is a town in St Gallen Canton near the border of the eastern Graubünden Canton. It is a Spa and Resort with supposedly restorative waters from a spring from up the Tamina Gorge. A bus takes you up into the gorge to a large building and chapel and we walked from there into the gorge. What a revelation this was after the Gorge we visited the other day in GaPa. This gorge is narrow too, but has huge, straight up soaring rock walls for 100s of meters. Above you can see where the water has eaten away at the limestone to form a crevasse to the daylight. Way below, ... read more

The day started with rain as expected which brought the temperature down to 18 - shades of home! The rain soon passed and left the day with clouds high up on the mountains and quite clear in the valley, so it was conducive for a walk down the valley on the high road. This trail took us along through farms and past farm buildings. There are virtually no animals around at present so I can only assume they are still grazing higher on the mountains until it's too cold. We came across a dairy selling mountain cheese, fresh milk, eggs and preserved meat so we purchased a block of cheese for about half of what we would pay at home. We also continued to pass textile factories that appear closed which took us to 4 in ... read more

After a day of travelling yesterday, today is catchup and 'get into the time zone' day. It is fabulous having warm, sunny days again and here it has cooled down to a nice 24 degrees, which after our winter actually feels very warm. However, never say goodbye to rain, because the next few days look as if we will have showers. So much for escaping Taranaki rain! After taking 'No More Jetlag' tablets every few hours for a day, we seem to have adjusted to the new time zone really well. Whether these things really work or it's all in our heads, who would know? What we do know is that we rarely have a problem with travelling long distances across time zones. It certainly helps too, to have a niece and her family living here ... read more

The trip to Zurich was just another long flight. At least we had most of Monday at home so that we could watch the school cross country race. Both Deken and Mila won their races and we are all so proud of them. They ran to win and win they did. It's great to see that our grandchildren are growing up to enjoy sport and not too much time spent sitting looking at phones. We left New Plymouth at 6pm, had a wait of 4 hours in Auckland, then a 11 eleven hour flight to Shanghai. Air New Zealand was okay but not up there with the best we have travelled with in the past. We flew out of Shanghai over the huge sprawling city and surrounds and it was amazing to see how people have ... read more

Allerdings ... read more

This morning i was up early to shower, pack and eat some breakfast as Tonz and I are going to pick up Vince & Alison at 9:15am. Before I left, Nina came upstairs with Evi to say goodbye and then I went downstairs to say goodbye to Muma & Pupa. Always sad to say goodbye but hopefully I will see them all agIan in the not too distant future. Our plan today is to pick up a hire car from Köln airport for a road trip to Switzerland! We picked Vince & Alison up pretty much on time and got to the airport around 10am. Tonz dropped us off and we all said farewell. We are all so grateful for everything he did for us. Truly a fabulous host. After a bit of confusion on where ... read more

Fantastic. The weather has settled to a bright blue gorgeousness and we are in the best possible location to enjoy it. The backdrop to campsite is the beautiful Mount Rigi and today is the day to get up and there enjoy its offerings. No Kisbee needed as it was only a step down to the lakeside where we jumped aboard the red train on the cog railway to take us to the top of the mountain. Great timing, arrived at the station just a couple of minutes before the train, which runs hourly, departed and got prime window seats in a open sided carriage. Stunning views of the lake and surroundings as we climbed higher and higher up Mount Rigi. Nearer the top there are three or four station stopping points. One is the changeover for ... read more
