Day 1 After taking off like bat out of hell the huskies finally settled down to a steady trot as we initially travelled through a picturesque forest with its snow covered fir trees glistening in the sunshine and then down over a frozen lake. Snow started fall and it started to get colder, in fact cold enough that I had trouble talking that is unusual for me. I had just started to relax when the dogs turned suddenly to the right - and I didn’t. But remembering the first rule of sledding, I hung onto the sled and as I fell off pulled it over with me. I quickly stuck my snow anchor in, righted the sled with my foot on the snow brake, pulled the snow anchor out and was on my way before the ... read more

It was an ambition I'd had for many years so on the 21st February I embarked on an adventure to take a team of Huskies across the Arctic Circle. As there was no electicity, never mind web access, I had to save my experiences in a hand written notebook until my return. I arrived at the base camp after a flight via Stockholm to a small town called Kiruna located in northern Sweden well inside the arctic circle. Kiruna is a mining town which is why there is an airport located there. By the time I arrived it was getting quite late so it was a quick introduction to the rest of the team before climbing into my sleeping bag for the night. The following morning we had breakfast before being introduced to our Husky team. ... read more

Hej Hej min familj och kompis, I got home from Kiruna yesterday and I am still exhausted. We were only there technically 2 nights. The other two nights were spent on 16 hour overnight trains getting there and then back. Try sleeping in a train seat, not the best. It even affected my dreams. I had one that I was so bored on the train that I left and went to the beach where I was riding an ostrich and then a weird hippo/wombat appeared and the ostrich jumped on it and started riding it so we ran along the beach together. Odd I am aware. We arrived in Kiruna fresh faced and ready to brave the cold in this little town in the tippy top of Sweden resting above the Arctic Circle. We put our ... read more

This has to be a short one because I am in a hotel (obviously I´m not staying here cos it´s missing a letter!) stealing free internet time! BUT I had to write one from here because: I am above the Arctic Circle! Yep, really! It´s kind of cold, there´s some snow around like it snowed last night or something, and it´s beeeaaauuutiful! Absolutely AMAZING! The train journey here was all lakes and mountains... I´m about to go out for dessert with an English guy I met at the train station here! Apparently his guide book recommends Swedish desserts, but I can´t afford to buy whole meals any more so I´m going to cook as well! Will be in touch from Norway!... read more

Off to Norway Europe » Sweden » Kiruna By ChipwoodJuly 1st 2007Untitled Hopped on the train this morning with the idea that I would stop and play golf a Abisko. I got off the train with my pack and walked a half a mile up hill (eveything seems to be up hill from the train depot) to the golf course. It was a beautiful day and I was excited at the thought of playing golf 240km above the Artic Circle. Much to my disappointment the lady behind the counter inform me that the course woudn´t be open for another week. What could I do, so I took a short walk around the area then went back to the station to write postcards and wait for the next ... read more

Ever since I watched David Reyne appearing on Australian travel show Getaway standing next to a moose in the broad daylight at 3am I have dreamed of visiting Lappland: the land of the midnight sun. Our Christmas adventure to far northern Sweden this year meant I was finally going to fulfill my dream, but ironically I would be seeing the exact opposite of the midnight sun, visiting in the depths of winter when the sun never actually makes it above the horizon and there is only about 5 hours of light a day. One thing is for sure- we would definitely be having a white Christmas! The lead up to our departure was a little stressful with persistant fog settling over London town for two days prior causing British Airways to cancel all of its domestic ... read more

Okay so, we got up early, got on the bus and went to Kiruna. For those of you who don't know, it is above the Arctic Circle. :) Anyway, it was cold, but it was neat. The town of Kiruna was built around the mine operated by the LKAB company. They pull iron ore out a mountain near the town. Almost everything is automated down to the drills, trains, elevators, and everything they use. We went down into the mine, to the level where they have a video theater and a museum. On other levels, they do mining, have the offices of the remote operators, and they even have an underground restaurant. It's very neat. An interesting fact to know-the mine is causing the earth to fall or crash into itself. This means that as the ... read more
