Today I had a field trip with Gunnel and an American friend who moved to Kullavik shortly after we did, Perrin. I'm not a shopper, but I do love things for the home, so our destination was Ekelund, "Master Weavers since 1692". Yes, you read that right, I didn't transpose...1692. They're good. The fact that they are located in a town called Horred was simply a bonus. I actually received an Ekelund table runner from my Mom a few years ago, a beautiful pattern of aspen leaves in black and gray tones...I never dreamed I'd be in the very factory where it was made! While Gunnel drove, she gave Perrin and I a geography/history lesson along the way. I will surely get some of this information goofed up, but I'll do my best. Horred is about ... read more

The date is moving closer, backpacks are retrieved, money is being changed. Happy faces...soon we will be swapping -12 degrees for +30! Zoƫ has some separation issues with her dad who is going to Brazil tomorrow, but that will pass. Zeb will bubblewrap his skimboard today and I need to send this link to even more people. ... read more

No photos this time, sorry for that. It's 6:00 pm on Thanksgiving and the only turkeys in sight are the ones on the napkins I brought from the states. It's 11 am in Minnesota and South Dakota right now...I expect that my Mom is occasionally basting the turkey and Jeff's Mom is wrapping up the pumpkin pies to take to his sister, Beth's, house. The Jessen's skyped us earlier...I assume they were all up early getting the turkey on. We miss your ham, but not as much as we miss you! Honestly, I'm not as sad as I thought I would be. Some of our new friends accepted the invitation to join us for fika this afternoon (last time I'll translate this...it's coffee break and the Swedes take it seriously). I prepared a twisted version of ... read more

We've been here now for two full months,I'm having a hard time resolving within myself how those days can feel like forever and hardly at all, all at the same time. I want/need to stop counting the days until we go "home"- don't quote me on that - but I'm going to try. Last week we had incredible weather, what we in Minnesota would call Indian Summer. In Sweden, it's referred to as "Brit Summer" (and I may have that wrong)...call it what you want, just give me more! As I look out the window, the trees are starting to turn. I LOVE Minnesota in the fall, hands down my favorite season...and I'm missing it. However, Sweden is doing it's best to make us feel at home. It's so beautiful to see the crimson leaves creeping ... read more

I understand that pride can be a dangerous thing. However, today I'm feeling a great deal of pride in my kids - if "pride goeth before the fall", then someone get ready to catch me! Emma and Signe have been in school for three full weeks and are doing great. Today Jorgen started at Eva's house, I stayed with him, as is the tradition here. When we entered the playroom, Jorgen clung to my leg as each of the three older boys introduced themselves IN ENGLISH, it touched me so that Eva had prepared them in trying to help Jorgen feel welcome. Eva herself, speaks very little English and hasn't spoken it since she was in school...which she claims was "a long time ago". One by one, in broken English, the little boys said, "My name ... read more

We've been here for one month now, and weekly church is about my only social interaction. Sure, I see the teacher at school, I wave at the neighbors, I see the ladies at the grocery store, but church is the only outing I choose to take each week. So we go. As I said in an earlier blog, not a lot of people attend church here. Ours is a small church that serves a large community of people and there has been room at each service I've attended. There has also been a different priest (as they are referred to here, not pastor) preaching each week. Roland is the newest pastor, and we've gotten to know him through a couple of meetings. It could be the highest priest in all of Sweden preaching and we wouldn't ... read more

The girls first days of school have gone well. We've breathed a huge sigh of relief and are hoping that the novelty of new friends who speak English doesn't wear off! They seem to be the exciting new thing in their classrooms. Signe's teacher, Jane, said that the parents she spoke to were excited to have an English speaking child in the classroom so that their own children would learn the language better. When I picked Signe up that first day, she was surrounded by girls and they were playing with animals like we had at home. Every minute or so, one of the girls would approach Jane with a word to translate so they could ask Signe questions. Jane said the kids were fascinated with Signe's drawings and that one boy said, "she has a ... read more

How can I be feeling pride and serious anxiety, all at once? We just walked the girls to school for their first day. They've been excited about starting school, ready to make some friends, more than anything. We've been talking and trying to prepare them for this for months. The question, however, is how do complete amateurs prepare kids for something they themselves know nothing about ? Neither Jeff nor I ever changed schools. My classmates were my classmates nearly my entire life, and so were his. When a new kid came to school, it was a huge event and I can remember the years that those people entered my life. Kim and Denise in the second grade...what a year that was! Our classes were small, the teachers changed infrequently and we knew everyone's families and ... read more

August 18th. Today is my brother, Chuck's, birthday. He would have been 46. The only thing I care to write about today is my family, because it was my first though when I woke up. That's kind of how it goes when you lose someone, I've learned. The thoughts of them are often random and quite often still surreal. Chuck died on March 5th, totally unexpected, and life will never be the same. Chuck and I weren't especially close, he was the 3rd child and I'm the 8th in a family of nine. We had six and a half years and Anne, Dan, Tim and Steve living their lives in between us. What I did know of my brother was that he was a quiet man who liked to talk in a goofy voice. I know ... read more

At last, we've had sunshine all day today. Since arriving, we've had overcast skies and rain at some point each day. People have assured us this isn't typical weather, but I was getting suspicious...and a tad depressed, to be honest. But today was glorious. Yesterday we had the opportunity to meet with a potential Dag Mamma (sounds like dawg mama and translates to day mother). Eva is a young grandmother type who's been doing home day care (dagis - sounds like doggies) for about 20 years. Her blue Swedish home sits on a hill about a half mile from our place and she has 3 other boys in her care who are near Jorgie's age. The first thing that I noticed was her wall full of books and I, selfishly, though, "alright, someone I can borrow ... read more
