Benidorm in winter. It’s the ugly sister of Torremolinos and I still have nightmares about that place. Blackpool comedians, with no sense of irony, have made a punchline out of Benidorm for decades. OK, it was never on my bucket list with Botswana or the Maldives. However, as ever, the offer of some cheap flights changed my mind. I decided I wanted to go to see if it was as bad as I imagined; and I imagined it to be pretty bad! On the positive side, I like a bit of winter sun; and it was an interesting experience. I concluded that, in winter, there are three very different Benidorms. We stayed in what I now call Benidorm number one; it’s quiet in January and has one of Europe’s most brilliant beaches; Playa de Poniente. In ... read more

After electing to fly with Turkish Airlines to France we were pleasantly surprised that this fully inclusive airline was in fact great to travel with. We loved the seat arrangement of two, four, two seat combination so that Pete enjoyed his preferred isle seat and I got the window seat instead of always being stuck in the middle seat! We were picked up in France by our motorhome swap couple in Lyon and after spending a night at their place in the country we headed off with much trepidation off to explore southern France to begin with. Pete had no problems driving on the right hand side off the road and thankfully my basic French is getting us by quite nicely, We travelled though the French Alps which are absolutely stunning and very very impressive with ... read more

Today Sunday, I blog from the town of Alfaz del Pi, just north of Benidorm in Valencia area of Spain. We arrived in Alicante yesterday by train, picked up our rental car (a similar one to the last) and headed north. We had fun and games finding the resort and finally, with the help of two kind Spanish ladies, finally found it. Perched on the side of a mountain overlooking the beautiful bay, our unit is very impressive and like a small home away from home. Our deck outside is huge, the sunshine is wonderful and we are ready to relax after a hectic vacation in Italy and France especially. We went to a local supermarket nearby and were stunned by the prices. How can they manage to make a profit at these low prices when ... read more

Thursday 25th November – Thursday 2nd December 2010 Further south to join a camping and caravanning club rally at Alfas del Pi close to Benidorm. Here we were made very welcome by Peter and Joan the club rally stewards. This is a relatively new site with excellent facilities which we made good use of throughout – indoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and gym plus bar and restaurant. The first evening we went along to the whist drive where Jack hoped to show off his expertise gained that afternoon during a quick lesson on how to play. With me winning the men’s highest score and Jack a good second we were lucky to escape with the prizes having been branded card sharps. ( note – me winning again the following Thursday did not dispel this illusion ... read more

Terra Mitica in Benidorm is an amazing place where you can spend a day out. The entertainment park brings together Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iberia and The Islands. There are great water slides, roller coasters- the longest wooden one in Europe! which we went on!! :) , boat rides, and shows of Gladiatores, pirates or belly dancers. We enjoyed Barbarroja so much, that we went to see it twice! It was absolutely AMAZING!! :)... read more

Yes, I’m still alive, just that this past week has been a busy for me academically, but nothing too interesting occurred, so I didn’t blog. Lunes 9 marzo 2009- During class today, the movie studio that I auditioned for called me 3 times. The first two times, I was in class, so I didn’t answer but finally they called me when I was between classes. Unfortunately, they had filled the spot for Tuesday afternoon, but still needed someone for an extra for casting on Tuesday and Wednesday. I probably should have done this seeing that it was an excused absence from school and possible a once in a life time opportunity to be an extra in a movie, but I decided not to because I enjoy class and this week I have mid-terms. A friend of ... read more

Sabado 7 marzo 2000- Today was the day of my big hike that was organized threw the University’s dept. of international education. I had to get up pretty early for a Saturday to make it to the meeting point by 8am, but I did it. (the hike I did last month, I woke up late and had to take a taxi to the meeting point, whoops). This time we took a smaller bus, so there were less people, which was nice. From my program, there were only 3 others so I got to meet other international students that are also studying at the Uni. It was about a 2 hour drive from Alicante to the start of our hike, even though the mountains were just past Benidorm, only 45 km away because the last 10 km ... read more

Ola Bo & Dud, Someone turned the thermostat up in Spain, we are currently getting temperatures in the mid 30c and the sun is extremely hot. It’s been far too hot for driving about in the car and site seeing so we’ve been awaiting a little cloud cover before setting out. Guadalest was top of our list for a visit. This is a historical town perched on one of the highest points of the Costa Blanca - its nickname is “The Eagles Nest”, you will see why when looking at the photographs. Initially, the village was built up around the Castle San Jose; but, an earthquake in 1644 devastated the region and demolished the buttress of the castle. We were able to walk around the east wall overlooking a huge reservoir. There looks to be plenty ... read more
