This is my final entry for this online journal and details briefly the last month that I was in Europe. An hour after Brady left the Dublin Airport for Chicago; I took a flight from Dublin to Naples, Italy. For a number of reasons, including lack of sleep, changing of time zones, this was the most confusing flight I had taken because after dozing off I awoke and looked at my watch and thought that we should have landed 10 minutes ago, but we didn’t land for another hour. For all my travels, I had everything planned out to a t, but that all ended when Brady went home because I just ran out of time to plan this last month, so a lot of it was by the seat of my pants, which was quite ... read more

3 Countries, 2 Continents, 1 Week This week started with me realizing that my time in Alicante had just ended. However, it was exciting start also because after a four hour train ride and an hour on the metro, I got to meet Brady at the airport. It has been months since I had seen any family, so it was exciting to see Brady. After dropping off our bags, we went to a Spanish restaurant for lunch before meeting up with two of my friends to go to a Bull Fight. This was a complete surprise for Brady because I didn’t tell him that I had found tickets after he said that he would like to expreince this aspect of Spanish culture. After going to the fight, Brady then had the same view of bull fighting ... read more

So the last two weeks have been a little crazy, well crazier than I’ve had the last few months because of all the academic work that I’ve been doing. During this time, I had to do 3 presentations, take 3 final exams and hand in two 15 page term papers. This normally would have caused me to go insane if I was back at Marquette, but here it was a lot easier for a number of reasons. First off, like I’ve said before, I’m pass-fail here so my grades don’t matter, so I didn’t have to worry about my grade. So, for the first time in my academic career I could study what interested me and write what I wanted and really didn’t care if I was going to be tested on it. I learned so ... read more

As I begin to write this, I really have no idea as to how to summarize my second half of my Spring Break travels that took me to seven countries and involved crossing Europe from South to North and then East to West. However, I will try to hit the high points, but I could never put into writing everything that I learned and experienced. I’ll start this blog on Thursday April 16. The rest of the people that I did the Camino de Santiago took the 13 hour bus ride back to Alicante at 4pm, but my friend Johan and I were taking the overnight train to Madrid, so we had some time to waste in Santiago de Compostela. We spent this time walking around the city, using the internet for the first time in ... read more

It’s been a while since I’ve done a blog because I have been traveling for the last two and a half weeks straight. Although I feel like it would take a book to write everything that I saw, experienced and learned, I am just going to give the cliff note version. My first seven days of my Spring Break I spend on the Camino de Santiago as a trip for my class called the History of the Camino de Santiago. In class we learn the history of the area, the legends and myths and other cultural aspects like the music and food of the area. Although one could start the Camino as far away as Germany, we did just the last 110 km (63miles), but I will get to the experience soon. First a history of ... read more

Viernes 3 de april- We left Alicante at 7:00 am in order to beat traffic. After a 5 hour ride in the bus to Granada, we were dropped off at the Alhambra, a Muslim palace complex that was built over 800 years ago. I say complex because it was added to over the years before being abandoned and ransacked for 200 years until Washington Erving bought it in the 1800’s. Even with many of the pieces of the beautiful tile gone and all the vibrant colors faded or gone, but it was still impressive. After the Alhambra, we checked into our hotel, which was quite beautiful. Seeing that it was about 3pm, we were hungry and searched for a restaurant. We were supposed to be back at the hotel at 5pm for a walking tour of ... read more

Hola amigos! I’ve decided to change the way I blog a little so that it is more interesting for you and more fun for me. I’m going to just blog about the trips that I take because the last two months that I am here I am doing a lot of traveling. I also will add random blogs like this one that is just general about what is going on. The big news academically for me is that the day I got back from Lisboa, I finally decided to move up another level in terms of Spanish classes, mean that I’ve moved from the bottom level to the third level (don’t get too impressed, there are seven levels/classes in total). I had been talking to both teachers about this move for about two weeks, but finally ... read more

Viernes 20 marzo 2009- We left the Alicante airport at about 11:30pm and arrive in Madrid about an hour later. Since our flight was at 7am, we found a quiet corner and tried to get some sleep. If you haven’t spent a night in an airport, consider yourself lucky, I’ll leave it at that. Because of time difference, we arrived in Lisboa, Portugal at 7:00am and made it to our hostel by way of city bus and great step by step directions to our hostel by 8am. We were starving and exhausted, but we couldn’t check in until 11, however, they allowed us to leave our bags in a room and then told us we could eat breakfast even though we hadn’t slept/paid for the night before. The hostel that we stayed at was called Oasis ... read more

Lunes 16 marzo 2009- Class went well today, even though I had my history of Spain mid-term. The exam was tough and took the whole two hours to answer all the easy questions, but I’m glad that it is behind me. After lunch, I celebrated with a three hour siesta, lol. When I got up, I decided to go on a hunt for sunglasses because it is getting to the point that it is a required part of the attire here. I went to two different Chinese stores (like dollar stores here), but I didn’t find any that I liked. I then continued to one of the local cafés that we frequent to use the internet and chilled with friends for an hour before returning home. To round out the night, I skyped with Will/Mom and ... read more
