Friday April 27th Villamayor de Monjardín is situated halfway up a steep volcanic peak so, for those of you who were wondering if it´s downhill all the way from the Pyrenees, there´s an awful lot of up and down on this Camino, at least until we get to Burgos. Then, at the end of Castile y Léon, it will get more punishing again, with the steepest ascent yet! The walk from Villamayor to Torres del Rio was another beautiful one (don´t worry there were still plenty of steep ups and downs!). All was improved by the fact that the sun shone brightly as we left Estella and we actually had to wear sunspecs and hats for the first time! Well howdy Pilgrim! We’re on the Camino or St James Pilgrim’s trail that stretches from St Jean-Pied de Port to Burgos, Spain We are undertaking approx. 40% (or 340km) of the famous Camino de Santiago trail (total 790km) that takes you across northern Spain starting from the Pyrenees Alps in St Jean-Pied de Port, France to Santiago, Spain, hence the aptly named ‘Road to Santiago’ or ‘Camino de Santiago’. Whilst many of the 250,000 annual walkers are completing a religious pilgrimage of sorts or taking time out from the daily grind. Some walkers take up to 40 days to complete the whole trail and even some Spanish courts deem the completion of the Camino as an alternative to ‘community service’ sentence. Hola Amigos! I´m sitting on the second floor of a cyber cafe with a tub full of ice cream. It´s nearly 9PM, the sun is high in the sky and the river is flowing strong through this ancient capital city called Najare. It is a ridiculously gorgeous place. I was greeted by these huge rocky promontories jutting off the hillside, framing the old town. This was after a long long day of 30km. Yes I am bragging. I´ve done two days in a row of 30km. It´s only walking after all, but little things add up and I´ve had some weird paranoid moments of doubt. Yesterday I arrived in Logrono with extremely sore feet. Gisteren belde Ilse mij met het verschrikkelijke nieuws dat haar huisgenootje Jan Roos (24 jaar) is omgekomen bij een verkeersongeluk. Terwijl hij op zijn racefiets op weg was naar Ede is hij aangereden door een auto en deze klap was fataal. Ik kende Jan ook, hij was altijd vrolijk als ik bij Ilse in huis was en maakte graag een praatje. Ik zal hem erg missen. Bij deze wil ik iedereen die Jan kende veel sterkte wensen met het verwerken van het verlies! Na het bericht van gisteren is het moeilijk om nu te schrijven wat ik de afgelopen drie weken nog allemaal heb gedaan, maar ik ga het proberen. Het weekend na mijn laatste bericht waren het Hugo en Richard, twee goede vrienden uit Wageningen, die op bezoek kwamen. Ze vlogen naar Zaragoza en zijn ... read more

In vier weken tijd zijn er weer een hoop dingen gebeurd. Allereerst gaat het onderzoek nog steeds goed en denken we over een week of drie alle resultaten te hebben om een goed artikel te schrijven. Ik zal me natuurlijk bezig gaan houden met het schrijven van mijn thesis verslag en daar heb ik dan ongeveer vier weken de tijd voor voordat ik weer terug naar Nederland kom op 19 juni. Op zaterdag 10 april ben ik met de bus naar Madrid afgereisd om daar, na zes weken, eindelijk Ilse weer eens te kunnen knuffelen. Ilse zou om zeven uur landen op Barajas en ik kwam al om 2 uur aan in Madrid. In de tussentijd ben ik naar het ‘hostel’ gegaan dat we hadden geboekt om het weekend in Madrid te kunnen doorbrengen.
