We got up and on our way just before 7am. Just over half an hour later, we passed the Ermita de la Virgen, a pretty nice rest stop, but we didn't stop. Another half an hour and we passed into the communidad of Los Riojas, famous for their grapes and wine. We walked just under an hour before we entered Logrono. Logrono is a pretty big town, and has the factories and plants to prove it. Just before entering, we saw a cute little house the offered water and a stamp, but we passed it up. We wound our way through Logrono to the main cathedral, then found a good place for breakfast. I don't remember the name, but we had coffee and sweets. After our breakfast, we headed out of Logrono, but it took a ... read more

Early morning call for Mr. Sherry. If anyone is wondering what goes on on the Camino in the middle of the night, with strangers of all ages, nationalities, genders, and desires, I can only relate my experience. At 3.37am this morning I received a call from the aged care facility in Australia where my mother lives, to advise me of a slight change in her medications. There’s no need for permission, it was just to let me know. So, at that time in an albergue, there is about 20 exhausted people, all in close proximity, snoring and sleeping in the hope to be energetic enough to walk the route the next day. Then came the shrill noise from under my pillow. Drowsy and confused, I grabbed the phone from under my pillow, answered it, said nothing, ... read more

Kathy and I spent our last day in Barcelona walking and busing around town. We visited the northern portion of the city around the business and high income areas as well as scoping out our logistics for getting to the Sants Barcelona (Barcelona train station) for our trip to Logrono. We also enjoyed (tongue in cheek) a ride on the Barcelona subway. Getting around in a city where you don't read or write the language is very difficult, both on you and them (them being those on the receiving end of our endless questions). It goes something like this.. Me: "How do I buy a ticket?" Them: "Habla Espanol?" Me: No! Habla Ingles?" Them: No! Then you stare at each other for a while wondering how do you talk to someone that doesn't have a clue ... read more

Torres del Rio to Logrono: Today was going to be a short day at just over 20 kilometers. We were up before 6am and out the door just before 7. Last night the Danish lady, Kirsten, told us she was going her own way tomorrow. She is planning on completing her Camino in only 30 days and we are shooting for 34. We knew the first stop for breakfast was 10 kilometers away at Viana, but we decided to go for it. It was a bit long, but not too hard. We stopped at the first place with outside chairs (so we could take off our shoes) called La Taverns to eat breakfast. I had the usual tortilla and cafe con leche, this time with ham and cheese. The next town would Logrono, just over ... read more

Forecast for Seville is 44 degrees tomorrow. Good thing we are heading north into southern France soon. Only 34 and 37 for the next two days here in Logrono. The drive from Madrid was a little more enjoyable than the typical trek down motorways. We crossed over some mountains heading toward Logrono hitting 1100 metres at about 4 separate locations. The last 30 or 40 kms was through an amazing, very ancient, glacial valley. Huge steep rock faces provided some spectacular scenery with a few small mediaeval villages nestling in among the rock. We were also very impressed by the tiny village we found for a lunch stop with some very old (medieval again?) house and inns. This is a great part of the world to explore far from the tourist crush of recent major city ... read more

We made it to Logrono in la rioja, planned to get another 25k today but it was a bridge too far! This morning we left Pamplona crossed into the citadel, took the bikes into an elevator to get to the ancient citade! Picked up the Camino and followed the walking trail up a very steep rough track through fields of wheat, barley, evening primrose and peas. At the top, in amongst the wind turbines we had a cup of tea enjoyed the views, then started a very steep, loose rock descent, navigating between the walking pilgrims; after a few chain incidents we made it to Puente la reina, then lunched in Estrella in the market square. Only 50 k of hills to go! Had some refreshing coffe in Los arcos and made it to Logrono, both ... read more

After a delicious breakfast in Los Arcos, we walked out at 6.15am. I had only walked for about 2kms and I switched from sandals to boots. My feet were sore but seemed to improve throughout the day, in spite of the many hills that had to be crossed. The scenery was amazing but the villages were rare. We passed through a gypsy settlement about a kilometre past Viana. There was about 20 or so vans and cars covered with blue tarps that completed the 'we're ready to pack up fast' look. We lost Masa today. He has a bad fever and was staying on at Los Arcos. last night we had a meal and a lot of laughs, often at my expense, with a multinational table; we had japanese, Croation, dutch and a guy from Norway ... read more

Please read my previous blog at before reading this blog as the story of my Camino begins there. 12 September 2016 Monday. Weather: Hot Distance from Villatuerta to Logroño: 0 as I took the bus from Estelle to Logroño, skipping Los Arcos and Viana. When planning my trip, I had scheduled my departure so that I would arrive in Logroño to participate in the Fiesta de San Mateo, a wine festival featuring grape crushing. I based arrival date upon the 2015 dates as the 2016 dates weren´t published until four months after I had to book an airline ticket using my frequent flyer miles. However, once the schedule was published in March 2016 the wine festival turned out to be a week later. Oh well. Today would be my day of rest...relatively. I had entered the ... read more
