Geo: 38.9162, -6.34563We continue to lament not spending more time in Portugal, but assuaged our grief with more Roman Architecture. Tad warm today, unlike the 70's in Lisbon, we were about 90 today. Yet with low humidity it was tolerable (barely). We walked a great deal, but few steps (great). We depart for Toledo in the am.We understand people are unable to make posts. We have no clue, but should anyone figure our the problem, please let us know.... read more

It is day 9 and a half into the Iberian trip. We left our campsite after a very entertaining evening watching our new neighbours a Spanish couple trying to find the perfect spot. He placed his levelling blocks under his wheels to raise it a couple of inches and the van kept going up and then came down again. We smiled as he paced out his pitch to work out exactly which electric cable was the one he needed to use. We use guesswork so found his precision quite amusing. Whilst all this was going on his wife donned industrial gloves used in the nuclear industry to wash her smalls. Behind all this another spanish caravanner was moving his van and his car into the part of the site which was closed to visitors. It was ... read more

Week 1 Tuesday 25th February – Week 1 The reality of setting off to Spain a month earlier than we had originally planned dawned today. I never thought I would be taking a 24 hour ferry trip crossing the Bay of Biscay in February with force 8 – 9 gales forecast! All was sunny and calm when we arrived in Portsmouth but it didn't last long. We actually survived the crossing thanks to some travel sickness tablets and even managed to eat an evening meal and finally get some sleep even though the ship was really rocking and rolling through the night. On arrival in Spain we decided to head straight for Salamanca where we stayed for 2 nights. The campsite was fairly basic but there was a bus into town handily placed at the entrance ... read more

Cacares is beloved of the Brits who use it as a staging post to somewhere else whether that is overwintering in the Algarve or overwintering in the Costas. We had read much about it in Motorhome forums and thought that we would give it a go. It was time to switch the clock back to European Team as we re-entered Spain from Portugal. Our site for the night was to be Camping Caceres which is an affiliated site to our own Caravan Club which meant it would be full of Brits and would conform to British standards. This meant decent sized pitches and lots of facilities and it was an ACSI site so cost 16 euros per night. Reception friendly and efficient, a small supermarket with very little in it, a huge swimming pool, a bar ... read more

Geo: 39.4891, -6.41299Having decided against the option of the bus which leaves from outside the campsite, we drove into nearby Cacares and found the recommended multi-storey car park for visiting the old city - although as with many that we have used in Spain, we were in fact underground rather than above. Access to some can be rather tight, but you do tend to go off sightseeing with some reassurance that your vehicle is safe - a sign of the times, sadly - plus it is in the shade.Anyhow, we followed the signs through narrow cobbled alleyways to what is reputed to be one of the most authentic medieval and Renaissance cities, with little changing in the last five to six hundred years. On reaching the Plaza Mayor, our first stop was the tourist information office for ... read more

Geo: 39.4891, -6.41294Yesterday (Thursday) afternoon we drove a few miles in the direction of Portugal, turned off for the town of Malpartida and a small national park by the name of Los Barruecos which we explored by car and the occasional short foray on foot. Here, we found two distinctive features of interest - landscape and wildlife. The park is littered with huge weather-worn boulders - some lying alone and others in piles with the odd one perched precariously. The sight is quite eerie and so unlike anything we had seen in Spain so far. If anything, it reminded me of the Roaches, just north of Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands, which I had first encountered on a geography field trip from school. The park has a number of lakes which are home to numerous species of bird ... read more
