The last chapter of our travel adventure finished with our plans in disarray. We left Italy in a hurry to get back to Leanne’s dad who was critically ill. Sadly he passed away soon after, but at least Leanne was able to see him before he passed and be around her mum when she needed her. Then there were funeral arrangements to be made and the many things that need to be done to organise affairs as people who have been in this situation will know. Sadly, Leanne's Aunt (Leanne's Mum's sister) also died whilst we were in Australia which made the trip even sadder for us all. In all we spent nearly four weeks back in Oz and Leanne felt as though she'd been hit by a bus. We thought all of the bad luck ... read more

It is very hot in Spain at the moment. When we left Salamanca towards Ciuad Rodriego and wanted to make a stop nowhere we could find a way stop, we saw one and that had not the slightest bit of shade so we went on. Pity for why we came to this place, it is an old ringed by thick walls medieval city and that part was okay but when we came to do video and photos at the old cathedral you had to pay to get into the church and were told no photo neither video. Well we gave that a miss. On the way back to the car we came passed the Tourist office who knew all about it and felt very bad about it. They gave us all sorts of things. Next we ... read more

A lot of us will agree that most people visit a different country in order to relax or experience a different culture. After all, nothing beats donning your swim suit, laying your towel on the sand, propping your shades over your eyes and watching the world go by, feeling absolutely NO guilt about that stack of paper that you have left on your desk in your office. In short, generally not giving a shit about anything else. Being carefree and shameless are fleeting emotions for some and we must do whatever we can to savour them. However, what happens when you experience a time where the emotion of being carefree has been taken away from you and it feels completely out of your control? Escapism. That is what happens. I am not afraid to admit that ... read more

Traveling down from San Sebastián trying to see more of the country than just the coastal route. Through the Basque countryside and then onto Getaria, a little seas side town where old Spanish ships sailed from, quite an ancient town. We zigzagged down the coast to Llanes, a picturesque little fishing seaside town, everybody all so friendly. Chocolate was a big thing there, chocolate to drink and to eat, very tempting so we didn't stay there long, chocolate town was too sinful. At Á Garuda a small fishing town we found a small Pensiona. and were really spoiled by our Spanish mum she was just lovely. and also the local restaurant who also looked after us very well. We ate very traditional foods from the sea, sardines anchovies cuttlefish. The owners made us a fantastic seafood Paella ... read more

For those of you who know me, it probably doesn't surprise you that I was packing pretty much up until the very last moment before heading to the airport in Kingston ?.... Cody, Craig and Gryphon were there to see me off and then, as Cody put it: "Dad, it's party time for the next 6 weeks" ! The flight from Toronto to Franfurt was the longest of the 3 flights, but for some reason, the last stretch from Frankfurt to Madrid felt like it took FOREVER (I think I was just getting tired by that point...). I have to admit that while I felt I did some decent planning for this trip (mostly in the "what do I need to take so that my pack doesn't weigh a ton" department), I kind of left the ... read more

After a scenic 2 hour train ride from Alicante, we arrived in Madrid, the capitol of Spain. The main train station Atocha, has a very scenic, almost tropical interior filled with palms and even a pond in the center filled with turtles! Sadly however, what it offers in scenery doesn't make up for the crappy signage that we're used to in most major transportation hubs as we wandered around 5 levels looking for the taxi stop. We were told by station staff to exit at level 5, where we found the cabs dropping people off but no indication of where they loaded. After a few trips up and down we finally discovered where they loaded, which was a long distance away from the main station, and as I said earlier, not marked at all. The Skinners ... read more

David and I arrived in Madrid about 5 o'clock. We've been in the air or sitting in airports for 21 hours. Jan and Rick got here before us but are probably sleeping so didn't disturb them. We feel like crap but the beer helped. There's a strip of bars just down the street from the hotel so we decided to get started on the tapas. Great institution! 8:30 and we're going to bed. The trip starts tomorrow.... read more

Madrid has become a favorite of my and Robyn's. I first came here on a school trip to Spain with a teacher who I consider a close friend. Later, I brought Robyn here, and it was on Cava Baja street that got engaged (in Spanish!). We love the culture, the art and especially the food. It's easy to eat good here for cheap, and it's easy to have a good time. The city is so safe and walkable, we wanted to spend a month here, so we did. I'm only going to do once blog post for the month we were here, with maybe an additional post for the side trips we did to Toledo and Segovia (via El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen). We did a lot of relaxing, half the fun is ... read more
