Today has been a relaxing day exploring Madrid. I was amazed at it's size and population of 3.5 million. The city is a thriving modern metropolis filled with 1000's of taxis, unbelievable number of tourist buses. It is recognized as the Cultural Capitol of Europe, which i was unaware of. There are two city tours in open top buses; Roger and I paid 13 erous for 2 days of being able to get on & off wherever we want. After traveling around listening to the historical aspect of much of the city; we stopped at the World renowned Prada Art Museum. You cannot believe the extensive nature of the lainting filling the 100+ room, plus a new contemporary extension. The collection was gather by one of the kings in the early 1800's from the Royal collection. ... read more

Excitement began to surge through our bodies as we prepared to leave Santiago de Compostela, after completing our 500 mile, 800km Camino or The Way of St. James. We are now on our way. A taxi ride to the railway station for a 9.05am train ride, only to discover the train had a mechanical failure. After 45 minutes hold-up we were on our way to Madrid, a 6 hour ride through magnificent country, rugged mountains, plains, farming, communities both large & small. The most thrilling part was going through tunnel after tunnel, some miles long. The trains are fast trains, traveling at high speed. One tunnel we were in went right under the mountain range for some 15 minutes; we were traveling at speeds up to 240kmh, which gives you an idea of the distance. It ... read more

Madrid capital of Spain 14 to 17 October 2014 We arrived in Madrid at about 1.30pm and dropped our bags off at our hotel. We then drove to the address of where we were to drop the car off. After driving around one of the squares several times to look for the Europcar office to drop off the car, I got Tom to drop me off so that I could walk around and try to find the office. In the end, I found we had to park the car in a multi story car park and then there was a very small office that I also found where we could drop off the keys. All was good. We then had a coffee at Starbucks before jumping on a metro to get into the city centre - ... read more

Delicious Madrid Eating seemed to be the main theme here - that and the art galleries. We arrived in Madrid and had only one incident and that was getting out of the parking lot near our hotel in order to return it to the airport. On our way into the lot there was a man in a booth. No problems for paying then on the way out. When we dropped off our luggage after checking out our thoroughly modern room at the Hotel Regina we drove to the exit. At the barrier we put the ticket in and it asked for 1.90E - no coin slot. The only slot in this yellow box was the ticket slot. There was one car behind us now flashing his lights at us. Ross then reinserted his ticket and was ... read more

Another wonderful day of art viewing in elegant Madrid. We went to the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza, a private collection which covers the entire development of Western art from pre-Renaissance until the end of 20th Century. It has examples of almost every big name you can think of - and often choice selections. We decided to work backwards and start with the most recent work, which turned out to be an excellent decision. Although the collection has strong pieces from every period we particularly liked the 20C selections. Our favourite room contained two Chagalls ( including the lovely warm Boy with Rooster) a Picasso harlequin, an awesome dreamy Dali, Magritte's witty Chef de Clamps, two Ernsts and two Tanguys! Talk about amazement overload. A special treat was an Ernst called Solitary and Conjugal Trees which I remembered ... read more

We are now in Madrid, centre of Royal and Catholic Spain with its magnificent palaces and plazas, baroque architecture and wonderful art galleries. Unfortunately neither the Palacio Real, where we began our Madrid tour yesterday, nor the Museo del Prado which we visited today, allows photos so you will just have to take my word for the beauties we are seeing inside and see photos of the plazas, buildings and parks. The Palacio Real and Madrid Cathedral sit on either side of a vast arched courtyard. Inside the Palacio is room after room of sumptuous decoration, each individual in style and colour and including marble mosaic floors, fresco ceilings (several by Tiepolo), detailed velvet wallpapers and matching upholstery, gold and marble inlaid tables and some 250 ornate clocks, not to mention painting and sculpture. One room ... read more

August 21, 2014 -- So, we arrived yesterday, the 20th, in Madrid, Spain. Mike and I will be participating in an English immersion "camp" for Spaniards who wish to improve their English skills. It is called Diverbo. We met with most of the English-speaking volunteers this afternoon for lunch, a quick pre-brief, and a wonderful flamenco performance. We will meet at the Diverbo office tomorrow morning, board a bus, and take the 3-1/2 hour journey to La Alberca, which will be our home for the next week. It is quite a comprehensive program, very structured, but it will be worth the effort. We will begin at 9 AM every day and will end between midnight and 1AM. We are both looking forward to meeting the Spaniards, and hope to establish relationships with some of the volunteers ... read more

You know the song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco?" For a long time after leaving and just moving across the bridge to Oakland I truly experienced a feeling of loss and as if a small piece of me and what felt like a lifetime of memories had been left behind. Eventually I adapted to my new home and grew to love it immensely. But I can't help but wonder if that new love for Oakland, California had something to do with the fact that in the back of my mind I knew that on any given day I could hop in my car or on the BART and find myself in this city that I loved so much. My love for Granada is unlike this experience in that once I return home, I know ... read more
