After a quick breakfast at a little coffee shop we gathered up our suitcases and headed downhill to the parkade. Once on the road and heading east we stopped in the town of Aranjuez for a coffee and to view the palace grounds before continuing onto Cuenca. Aranjuez is a name of a song Jim plays on his guita, so we wanted to see it. We passed through grain fields and vineyards and forests on our route. The city of Cuenca started as a fortified settlement on a steep bluff between two river canyons. Our little hotel was in the old town, high on the bluff. We checked in and then went to a very nice restaurant for lunch. In the evening we headed out to see the principal sights, the Hanging Houses and the old ... read more

On the night before we left Madrid I woke up in a panic! I had a sudden realization that our ticket to Cuenca had us arriving at the station on the outskirts of Cuenca, not right in town like I had studied on Google Earth! As soon as we woke up I fired up the ipad and sure enough, we were to arrive in the Fernando Zobel Station, which was 5 km out of town! I quickly looked up the best way to get into town and felt somewhat calmer after learning that we could take a bus. We then completed the hateful job of packing. Curtis is pretty sure his weighs much more than when we arrived! We tidied up the apartment and arranged and re-arranged our bags until zippers were zipped and loaded onto ... read more

Berlingo packed, we headed off on stage 1. We'd spent a bit of time planning where to go with a variety of maps and guide books and had decided to head for Daroca. A small heritage listed town in the hills, it was supposed to a bit off the tourist trail, but excellent and worth a visit. This road seemed great, at least until we noticed that we were heading straight towards a huge fire. Soon enough, a policeman waved us down and informed us the road was closed. No problem, we thought, as we tried out the 'avoid roadblock' function on the TomTom. After it had taken us down a few actual goat tracks and up a couple of driveways trying to get us to Daroca we gave up on it, and changed our destination. ... read more

We eagerly headed to the train station, excited to use our Eurail passes for the first time. However, we were not prepared for the mad rush of the European trains. With signs as poorly marked as our tickets, we spun in circles trying to find the train bound for Cuenca. What was not explained to us was the “minor” detail that we first needed to ride the local train to a location just outside of Madrid. Our hearts sunk as our departure time came and went, leaving us frantically searching the platforms. Luckily, the connecting train departed every few minutes and we found ourselves on board racing against the clock to catch the Cuenca bound train. With a stroke of good luck and a heavy sigh of relief, we made it to our seats on the ... read more

So yesterday Spain had their second holiday in two weeks. GO SPAIN!!! In reference to the pool being closed on this holiday, my coach said p*** piscina. However, its not their fault its a holiday! Its Spain. So crazy. It was only a holiday in Madrid though, it was the day of their patron saint, Saint Almudena. It was supposed to rain in Madrid, and everything was going to be closed, so I peaced out! There are so many towns around Madrid that I want to go to, but I decided to go to Cuenca. It was a two hour bus ride away. The train took the same amount of time but was more expensive. Kelsey was visiting me, but she was going to Cordoba and Malaga, much further away and way too expensive!! I woke ... read more

In Alcaniz my hosts were a couple named Jesus and Carmen, who went by the odd nickname Mamen. We hung out at their apartment for a while, and Jesus made me the Spanish version of a fried egg, where you heat up a pan of oil, then drop in an egg, immediately turn off the heat, and let it sit there for less than a minute, and it was really awesome! After a while, we went out to walk around the town, where I saw a stork nest! It was up at the top of the church’s tower, and at first I thought it was some kind of weird decoration, because the nest and the birds were so huge. Jesus was like, “oh yeah, we get a ton of those… sometimes it’s dangerous because the nests ... read more

Travel blog 19 Monday, 24th March 2008 Easter Monday Determined to see Toledo today, as driven a long way to get here. Dosed myself up and headed out of campsite just as bus came along so hopped on for short journey into the town which is entered by one of three bridges. It really is the most picturesque place. Decided I would visit the cathedral at cost of 7 euros, so agreed to meet Andy later. The cathedral was definitely worth a visit. I thought it was splendid and one of the best I have ever seen. The massive choir stalls were something in themselves. Hundreds of amazing wooden carvings at a lower level depicting scenes allegedly of the fall of Granada. Poor old Granada! Cannot believe that these related to the book I am currently ... read more

So I arrived in Spain lamost 2 weeks ago now and have started teaching English in a school here in Cuenca. The city is beautiful, especially the old town, very traditionally Spanish and the countryside surrounding Cuenca is superb, mostly national park land. I has been fairly hard for me as at the moment I dont speak much Spanish other than what I learned at University in the UK but havnt had much chance to practise before moving here, although it is improving all the time. Teaching English is a wicked experience, having lots of fun in the classroom to try and make the kids interested and it generally works! I have had four days off work the weekend as thursday was a national holliday in Spain so yesterday I took a walk up the hill ... read more
