Prepared for the weather, we stepped out into the rain and began our 6km walk to board the bus for Bilbao, where Jane wanted to see and visit the Guggenheim Museum. It is a museum of modern and contemporary art housing major 20th-century artworks and was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. The museum was inaugurated on 18 October 1997 by King Juan Carlos I of Spain. The building is gleaming titanium and glass. Apart from the last few kilometres the complete journey to Bilbao was in rain, very low cloud and thick mist. The road wound its way into, over and down the mountains, through scores of tunnels and bridges. The valleys were deep, the rivers frequent, the vegetation lush green, the farmhouses were neat and clinging to the valley sides, the small towns silently ... read more

Day 13 Bilbao We woke up early and packed our apartment up ready for the purple house tomorrow stay tuned...... We waited at the bus stop until the bus came, it had YouTube but the wifi was a little dodge, but what do you expect? The bus was two hours and when we got off it took about 30 minutes to walk to the hotel. They said we would get in at 2 so we went to Guggenheim gallery, it was amazing. Then we went to a really cool park afterwards, then at 4:30 went to the hotel. It is really nice, it has room service but turns out it does not come till 7:30 and it was only 5. we were all hungry so we went to the restaurant but the kitchen was closed so ... read more

Every country has it's own ways so has Spain. You have no chance to eat before 8 O'clock. So when we were all settled we went out to see what there was to eat. But tit were all closed doors. We just had to wait. We found a small place that was open just before openings time. So we were winners anyway. We had steak with a salad and chips. Not to bad. No dessert it was to late said Liz otherwise she would not be able to sleep. Must be true for we both had a good sleep. We stayed in Bilbao so were not in any hurry. We were up at 7.30 and at 8.30 we made an appearance at the breakfast table. Always an interesting time. Organising your breakfast in what or what ... read more

Before returning to the Camino, I would like to make a few comments about the town of Bilbao. This place is awash in History both new and old. It has a very modern easy to use public transportation system that allows you to visit many of the significant location quickly. The city has great shopping, restaurants in a beautiful setting, and it has the Guggenheim museum! I highly recommend this city to anyone visiting Spain, next to Barcelona this has been our favorite spot.... read more

We sadly leave Bilbao on our walk to Portugalete (10K), the weather is perfect for this leg of the Camino and Kris is all in on this one. We stop at many locations along the way to enjoy the day and add mileage to the trek. The Guggenheim museum is world class structure and from the outside a truly stunning work of art. On the inside, with the exception of the impressive metal sculpture on permanent display, the modern art exhibit was not my favorite. I visited the inside the night before during a thunder storm, it only a 15 min. walk from the hotel, and I told Kris to rest up and it was a must see we would go inside before leaving for Portugalete. Not much to say about this walk as it wound ... read more

Day 6 greets us with full on sunny sky and a short 15K run into Bilbao. The Camino starts on pavement and goes thru ugly cheap apartments until we reach an important church of San Martine. From here we are supposed to start uphill for 5k then descend into Bilbao, only problem as with a lot of the Camino in town the markers are non existent. Being the experienced lost person and tried of logging extra miles I astutely sit a wait for a new dumbass to come by and lead the way. Sadly 3 then 4 the 5 people do the same thing, pull out maps, walk in a circle then sit down and look at the others and wonder who knows the way? Ultimately a Spanish version of Rocky walks by with his dog, ... read more

As I’ve lived in Spain, my ‘Spain Bucket List’ has grown and grown. But one place that has been on my list since before I moved here was Bilbao. For winter vacation, I went to the Basque Country before visiting a good friend in Brittany, northwestern France. Flying on Christmas Day was overall a good idea (due to price, lack of passengers, surprising cheeriness of staff), but I arrived too early to the tiny La Coruña airport. I had to wait in the main entrance for a while until they opened the gift shop that acted as the route to the security clearance. I was happy, though, that the duty-free shop (after security) was open because I wanted to buy some Galician liquor (crema de orujo or café licor were both options) as a host present ... read more
