so to continue... we made our way to el pais vasco, an autonomous community in northeast on the border with france. the basque people have their own separate history, culture, and even language that can't be related to any other language spoken on the planet. many basques want complete autonomy from spain (as an autonomous community they have many rights, but are still part of spain), the most extreme case of which can be seen in the terrorist group ETA. bilbao, our first stop, is essentially the industrial center of el pais vasco, but over the past 10-20 years it has seen incredible growth as a city of culture and other things. so yea, we arrived in bilbao around american dinner time and hopped on their metro system to get to the center of the city. ... read more

Much has been said about the chaotic boarding procedures for Europe’s cheap-flight carriers, but it’s not until I’ve joined the devastating queue for EasyJet Flight 3775 that the rumors seem less than overblown. People are shifting with the deft choreography of an offensive line protecting against the pass rush. There seem to be eye signals at work. I’m holding my boarding pass with a dumb smile while around me, a frothing insurrection is surging toward the gate. By day, these same people kiss their wives and pat their sons’ heads and make stupid gurgling noises at baby carriages. Beside me, a little old lady is using her wide hips for leverage. I take my seat beside a tearful young Spanish girl who’s staring bleakly out the window. Her shoulders heave and convulse; her mood shifts ... read more

The Guggenheim is amazing. It´s everything it´s cracked up to be and more. Some people may kill me for saying this but the interior spaces were so much more interesting than the artwork it holds - then again my disclaimer is that I´m looking at it from a different eye to most people. You kinda want to stop people and go, "Do you SEE that? Do you notice this space you're walking in???" :p Stayed in a nice pension here, next to the Cathedral de Santiago, overlooking the plaza. Only drawback was the churchbells ringing every 15 minutes. Thank God they stopped after 10pm. Also got to see the Zubizuri by Calatrava. Bilbao is like an architectural tour for me because I know of these projects through magazines, but seeing them gives a whole new meaning. ... read more

After 20 minutes in the scorching sunshine we finally managed to work out how to use the parking meter and then entered the Guggenheim Museum, an impressive structure of titanium and glass, itself a stunning piece of art. The exhibits inside are equally stimulating, some on a huge scale. Definitely worth the visit. We then sped along the coast to a campsite near Comillas. It was a very spanish famiy oriented site. The nearest beach was a short cycle ride away. The actual town of Comillas was buzzing with a local festival. Comillas features a Gaudi built house. ... read more

The reception guy at our Hossegor hotel initially introduced himself as "the prince", so when I went to ask such a peasant like question as "Do you know where I can catch the bus to Spain?" I was naturally a bit intimidated. :) He was actually really helpful and always went out of his way to help and offer us advice. We are still not sure why he called himself "the prince" or why a prince would be working in a cheap hotel, but we had had a nice place to stay, friendly service and was now well informed of the whereabouts of the royal departure bus stop to Spain. :) The prince estimated it would take us 15min to walk, but in 6min we were at the royal stop and on the bus to Bayonne. ... read more

Bilbao, such a cute town, also a good place to go shopping. But we only did a little due to the whole staying on a budget. We walked along the river and visited the world famous titanium covered Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art. Amie and Reesa surprisingly had a good time, we spent about 4 hours looking at pieces of art as well as walking through art. One display was large slabs of iron plates that you could walk between and they usually got y a little dizzy before opening into the middle of a circle...then you had to meander your way back out. We even witnessed a big, big no no. There are signs everywhere that indicate holding your child by the hand at all times. I saw one child take a run towards a ... read more

I guess it was a packet of chips for lunch on a park bench in Barcelona because I couldn't stand the idea of yet another lunch alone that told me my Europe travels were coming to an end soon. I was in one of the world's greatest cities and I could only really just appreciate it for being that. The stress of solo travel is wearing me out. I've also hit a bit of depression and a bout of what I think is giardiasis. Anyway, time for the travel bits !! Rome was a ball of accommodation hassles. All I really remember was phoning places from before I left Florence to every day being in Rome trying to find a cheap bed. However I avoided sleeping at the Colloseo, and saw the sights etc. So, Barcelona, ... read more

Exhaustion hit today! Or was it last night after our Madrid night out? I woke up today feeling so tired and just knew I was going to get sick bad! Most the day was spent driving to Bilbao from Madrid. I slept pretty much all the way only waking up to have lunch in Burgos. Burgos was a small town. As it was Sunday not much was open apart from some restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops. Todd and I had lunch with Nancy and Joe (from Colorado, USA). They had cheeseburgers and I had Spaghetti Bolognese. It was pretty good actually. Afterwards Nancy and browsed around the shops. As I said before not much open. She bought some gelato and I tried to hunt down some moisturizer. Back on the bus and back to sleep. My ... read more

The journey to Bilbao was actually pretty painless. I was anticipating major trouble since, in their foresight, the Spanish and French trains run on different gauges and the whole Spanish public transporation system is not supposed to be very good. You would not know it from our trip though. After an interesting trip to the train station, we just rode the train for forty minutes to Irun, which is the first town on the Spanish side of the border, and hopped on the bus to Bilbao that left ten minutes later. (Patrice got pulled over by the flamboyant French police. Instead of pulling him over in a car, the tight pants and high boots wearing cop stepped out from behind a building and pointed at the car. Poor Patrice managed to talk his way down to ... read more

thank god. the food here is much better. ok i know that i haven´t updated ina bit, we´ve been so busy traveling haven´t had a chance to. anyway, we´re in spain, and the weather here is 85 today. gorgeous day! i went shopping earlier, and went into the guggenheim here, which was amazing. i got to walk inside some of richard serras monumental sculptures, something i´ve wanted to do as long as i can remember. they were amazing. the biggest one is made of 7 steel plates and weighs 120 tons. and the most amzing part, nothing is held together, no pins into the flor, no sodering, just gravity. to stand inside one of those you really get a sense of how small and fragile you are. i stood inside one of the work and was ... read more
