Today is our final full day of our Spanish adventure. We spent the day in Seville, hitting all of the places we were unable to yesterday. We started our day at the Cathedral and all of the surrounding sites, including "La Giralda," or the bell tower. The Cathedral itself is the largest Gothic cathedral in all of Europe. It is home to numerous smaller chapels on various sides of the Cathedral. The main altar is quite the spectacle, as it looks like it is covered in solid gold plates and has theologic figures from floor to ceiling. The tomb of Christopher Columbus is housed within the Cathedral. We probably would have done better with audio guides through the museum, as it was not very English speaking friendly, but we made do. All of the placards and ... read more

Today is Spain's National Labor Day, so the city was packed! We started our day trying to go to the Royal Alcazar Palace, to only find a line that was ridiculously long and not moving (in 20 minutes, they allowed in less than 50 people). We stood in it for a while, and decided to book a tour later in the day. In the meantime, we went to the Museo de Flamenco (The Flamenco Museum). This museum was an interactive museum with a lot of videos, costumes, artwork, etc. Cody and I learn best by having written information in front of us with the option to listen to audio/video, but with only having videos of different dancers showing the variations of flamenco, this museum was not for us. We liked walking around and watching some stuff, ... read more

The train trip from Cordoba to Seville is only about an hour, passing small white villages set amongst vast orchards of Seville orange trees. The oranges are sadly too bitter to eat and are used mainly for oils and perfumes with tonnes being exported to the UK each year to be made into marmalade. Seville is another picturesque city with a massive gothic cathedral dominating the centre. The cathedral is apparently tne 3rd largest after St Peter's in Rome and St Paul's in London and is the largest gothic cathedral in the world. We struck gold this time with our hotel being a beautiful period building about 75m from the cathedral. We didn't spend time in the hotel but got out to visit the Cathedral which contains the tomb of Christopher Columbus. The climb up the ... read more

We had kept the first day largely for finding our feet. The walking tour helped with orientation. Fortunately the weather was not too hot, but in summer it must take it's toll. As the sun beats down, the tourists queue. Morning is clearly more popular and demand is at the highest. We could see the masses gathering, as we walked across from Metropol Parasol. We had already booked tickets online for the Real Alcazar. The ticket also gave the option to visit the upper apartments for an extra sum of 5 €uros. We had booked in advance for the last tour of the day at 1:30 pm. The upper apartments are still technically a working royal palace. There were no photos and no bags, so keep a 1 €uro coin handy for the lockers to which ... read more

The prospects for our trip didn't look good. The "Beast From The East" was back in mini form. Sub zero temperatures and snow. We awoke to a covering of about 2 inches. It seems that is sufficient to bring the country down these days. London Heathrow Airport had already cancelled scores of flights in anticipation of the white stuff the day before. I checked the East Midlands Airport twitter feed. Runway closed until 7:30 am for snow clearance. The next update. Runway closed until 8:30 for snow clearance. They need a bigger snow polugh! There were periodic updates until 10:38, when aircraft started to leave. Meanwhile, disappointed passengers would learn of the cancellation of their budget airline flight. Malaga - Spain. Rain rain go away ... to depressing for me to stay . That is how I felt . Seville has had the equivalent of a years rain in the last 3 months..another example of climate change. After the previous day I sent a note to my trusty travel agent saying I had had it and would like to change my ticket for an earlier return . YEAH SUSAN !!!!! She was able to get me onto a flight on the 14th and i was pleased . As it happens i was able to takethe fast traIn to Madrid on the 13th and met BRENDA on the platform 10 minutes later as she arrived from Valencia.Great timing. And the sun was shining after raining all morning . BUT I have gotten ahead of myself . Seville day 2 ... read more

Another marvellous city . The train ride was a bit of a surprise as half the distance was in a bus . They are rebuilding train tracks to accommodate high speed trains come summer so there are segments where RNFE is using buses . Comfortable enough but there is no discount offered . Oh well , easy enough to use. I neglected to mention the cathedral in Granada. It was truly impressive as the only Renaissance church in Spain . The interior is white and that huge space it is magnificently bright. compared to most Spanish churches i have seen . The altars were amazing , as was the art work throughout . I arrived in Seville in the rain ...I am really getting tired of the rain . It let up for a while and ... read more

Beim spontanen Theater geht es ... read more

We spotted a place called the Los Angeles Café on our way to the next hotel (almost next door to it, actually) and made a note of the presence of eggs. We park our in-transit luggage next to a table and slam a couple huevos without going out of our wayvoes. The new place is fine and we’re in and out pretty quick. This will be one of those very short blog entries everyone dreams of. Here’s why we spent an extra day here and why we didn’t need to: While looking at a travel guide we saw a picture of the gardens of the Alcazar, another palace/grounds combo here in old town. Steve glanced at the shot and instantly recognized it as Dorne from Game of Thrones! A Google search confirmed it, so we had ... read more
