Now that we´re a full week into March, our semester is about half over and Laura and I are in disbelief...where did the time go?! Anyway, this last weekend we went with our program to Sevilla (Seville), a city 3 hours from Granada where we found more sunshine and higher temperatures...woohoo!! We got there Friday afternoon and spent some time wandering in Plaza de España where we ate our lunches and enjoyed seeing the sun--quite a change from Granada´s rain. Then we took a bus tour of the city, stopping at the Alcazar (the royal palace) which consists of 3 different palaces, all built at different times. Then we went to the cathedral in Sevilla that is the 3rd largest in Europe next to St. Peter´s in Rome and St. Paul´s in London. It is the ... read more

If a tourist asks you for directions and you´re not sure about giving them the right ones, don´t give them any at all!!! On Friday, we were told at the Hotel that we could get a train to Seville, Spain (our next destination) from Tunes, Portugal (a town one train station away from where we were). After 4 hours of buses and waiting for the train we arrived in Tunes (5 minute train ride away) to find out that there is no train to Seville only a bus from Faro (2 train stations in the other direction from where we started) to Seville. By the time we got to Faro it was late so we decided to stay the night. Although we really liked Faro we were going to stick to our original plan and headed ... read more

Seville is a very charming spanish city. Me and my partner Nicko stayed there for a couple of days during our holiday in Andalucia in september 2004. We had a lovely time. We stayed at a very Nice patio hotel at the C/Lumbreras. A 20 min walk to the historical city center, but you can easily take the circle bus. Rates around 90 euros per room per night, and a parking in the basement. Very nice apartmentstyle rooms with a kitchen and separate bedroom. Website: www.patiosdesevilla.com We visited the Alcazar, the Cathedral and her Giralda, the tower, form where you have stunning views over the city. Where are really the remains of Christopher Columbus ? Is he buried in Sevilla or Santo Domingo ? The controversy has been going on for a century, and the historians ... read more

Semana Santa.......and we were in Sevilla! Ku Klux Klan? Look at these pictures. It's not some Ku Klux clan rally or some costume party or some parade. This is a Good Friday procession in the heart of Seville, Spain. We stayed in Hotel Don Paco, and right in front of our hotel, some 4 to 5 processions must have passed. Carried on the shoulders of locals called "costaleros" , the pasos (religious statues) weaved through the narrow streets from almost all corners! Behind and in front of the pasos walked locals called "nazarenos" wearing capes as you'd see in these photos. Some are in white capes, others in purple, some in blue, and many others in black and green . From our hotel , we watched as all these processions emerged from all streets...........and seemed to ... read more

It’s Happy Day in Seville. More on initiative of our group of four than of the calendar. But it’s Happy Day, no sad faces are allowed. The Scandinavian girls in the corner of the Irish pub are surprised when they get their drinks. ”Why?” they ask. ”Because it’s Happy Day”. The US Air Force pilots explain in detail what it’s like being a pilot. ”Just like Top Gun” we nod enthusiastically. ”Yes, like Top Gun” they say, equally enthusiastically. Maybe we shouldn’t make fun of them. After all, they have big, scary fighter planes. We have a small rental car. But for us it’s just Happy Day. Tomorrow is Big Sightseeing Day…... read more
