Our excursion today is to Tavira which is east of Faro and on the south coast of Portugal. It is an ancient town founded in 1,000 BC. The old town is typical of most European cities and towns - very narrow cobblestoned streets lined with ornate buildings complete with fancy iron balconies. The sidewalks are all uneven cobblestones making it a challenge to walk straight. I wonder if they did that so you couldn’t tell who had too much to drink and who was sober. These towns are immaculately clean, no garbage anywhere. We saw a lady out with a mop swabbing down the front of her very well maintained house. Many of the buildings have glazed ceramic tiles known as azulajo either as a decoration or as a whole front coverage. Uniquely coloured and decorated ... read more

Its always exciting when driving off to new location. Leaving Lisbon it was extra exciting as we would be driving over the Vasco de Gama bridge, 7.6miles long with 2 elevated sections for vessels to pass under. Later we would meet a Portuguese man, (who incidentally works and lives in Luton, who said when it opened in 1998 15,000 people had a street party on it, with tables joined end to end over the whole length of the bridge! It was time again for a bit R+R again. So we headed for a campsite inland that was situated on the edge of a reservoir and was as close to nature as you could get. The receptionist said you could pick your own spot as long as you are 10 metres apart. Well, we could have had ... read more

Geo: 37.1258, -7.64984After a late breakfast we headed west to visit the town of Tavira. It had lovely cobblestone streets, ornate churches, Portuguese architecture and also a castle. Before visiting the castle we stopped for coffee and a waffle. It is a tourist town with lots of cafes and restaurants, but it is still charming. After viewing the castle we explored narrow streets and found a wonderful place for a late lunch. We all enjoyed some traditional Portuguese meals, including grilled squid, razor clams served in two ways, and seafood soup.Once we were back on the road we made one more stop at a small village called Cacela Velha. Cacela Velha is situated on a hill with a view of a lagoon and the ocean beyond. We had a quick wander through before heading home. Our ... read more

A demain... read more

Tavira is nice seaside village with lots of restaurants on both sides of the river that flows into the ocean. Many tourists stop to look at the Roman bridge that crosses the river but the age of the bridge is disputed. We enjoy walking through the old part of town and eating at a Italian restaurant owned by a man from Turkey. Our apartment here is not great, the air conditioning is in the living room only and the fan in the bedroom does not work. The main draw in Tavira is Tavira Island. Ferries leaves from the river to the island on the half hour and returns from the island on the hour. The cost for the ferry is only one euro each way and only takes 20 minutes. Private boats will also take you ... read more

Day 6 - Thursday 21st November Today turned out to be a bit of a damp squib. The original plan was to get up early and go up north to Évora to see Megaliths and pre-historic stuff. Google maps had claimed it was just a two hour drive but the satnav reckoned more than three hours each way. We decided it probably wasn't worth it as we would not have time to see much and drove east to Tavira instead. Tavira is very pretty, with cobbled narrow roads, bits of castle walls and fancy old churches. If you have been reading my Portugal blogs everyday, you will have heard all of this before and at this point, both Glyn and I realised we were getting a bit bored of this kind of stuff. So after spending ... read more

Have you ever heard of Tavira? Today we decided to take the option to have a day on our own instead of joining the group for the boat cruise. We had a leisurely morning and ended up renting a car to explore the southern coast of the Algarve (Southern Coast of Portugal). We spent most of our time focusing on two towns. The first town was called Silvas. This is another hill top castle town. We made our way thru the tiny, winding streets of the city. I ended up going thru the city no less than 3 times before I finally figured out how to get the actual castle. This certified that I am still good at driving at small winding roads. My mom did get a chance to practice her verbal gasps to let ... read more

Tuesday 15th February 2010 Time to move on to Portugal today via Palos de Frontera. Palos is considered the "cradle of the Discovery of America" because from its port in 1492 the ships of Christopher Columbus and the Pinzon brothers set off to discover a shorter route to India and discovered the New World. On the evening of 3 August 1492, Columbus departed with three ships; the Santa María nicknamed Gallega (the Galician), and two smaller caravels the Pinta (the Painted) and the Santa Clara. On the morning of October 12th land was sighted and the rest is history. Today we find the old port and the Muelle de las Carabelas ("Dock of the Caravels") which has been faithfully reconstructed, with storage buildings, canteens and shops of various craftsmen. Particularly impressive are the exact replicas of ... read more

So our time in Portugal was cut short due to the flight delays. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We arrived in Faro at about 9am and decided that it was too small to be interesting but too large to feel relaxed so we jumped on a train and headed along the coast for Tavira, which we just picked out of the lonely planet. The place was brilliant, a little town straddling a river, centered around a castle and cathedral, with only a few thousand population. We checked into a hostel and spent the afternoon strolling around. We only saw about ten cars in the main street all day. The ruins of the castle were done up so tastefully - The grounds were full of gardens and pathways and you could climb up ... read more
