We left Cascais on Friday afternoon for an overnight sail down to Lagos. It was all very pleasant with good winds until I noticed at about 2am that my front port and starboard navigation lights were not working. I duly plodded down to the bow clutching my new bulb and discovered that the previous owner had broken the bulb fitting in the light housing and instead of going to the expense of replacing it had soldered the bulb directly to the wires……….I love that man, can’t wait to meet him again. We had to sail through the night without port and starboard lights so I switched the steaming mast light on just to ensure we could at least be seen from the front. Picked up some good winds in the morning and rounded Cabo sao Vicente ... read more

Today has been an unexpectedly delightful day!! We had booked the boys for a 2-hour morning fishing excursion with no other real plans for the rest of the day. Late last night the company sent us an email asking us would we be ok with a free upgrade to the 4-hour fishing trip. Well, yes, we would be ok with that. So, we got an early start off to Alvor which is only 10 minutes away and the boys got on their boat at 8:30 and headed off for a 1/2 day of fishing excitement! For this paragraph, I (Nigel) will take over writing. The fishing was an absolute blast. There was constant action. You were either re-baiting your hook, getting a nibble, striking to hook a fish, or else someone else was reeling one in. ... read more

Today was another kind of quiet day. We ran and swam (of course) and then headed out to Lagos (pronounced Lagosh). We walked along the pier and saw lots of big fish in the rocks close to the pier as well as some big crabs! Then we checked out the Forte de Badeira which is at the end of the promenade and has a good lookout in all directions. Then we wandered through the cobblestone pedestrian-only streets and shops. It did reach a high of 32 today which was hot but there was still a nice breeze and humidity was only 26% so the heat was bearable. Having said that, there was still quite a bit of time spent in the pool both in the morning and at the end of the day. Not much else ... read more

Short blog today. We spent the day at a nearby waterpark. There were about 25 different slides you could go down ranging from a toilet bowl to a head first kamikazi to crazy river. Lots of tubes, mats, and sunburns. I missed a small section around my hairline and it always makes me glad I applied sunscreen! We were definitely in the minority wearing our sunshirts but there were still quite a few. There were certainly some who should have been wearing them but were fried instead. And the locals simply wear the skimpiest suits they can! Russell and I have this going joke about people who forgot to put on the rest of their (insert bathing suit, shirt, shorts, etc.). One nice feature about the waterpark is that from the top of all the slides ... read more

It is always hard to get the blog updated with what we have done just before leaving a port. As a result will go back in time to just before we left Lagos to fill in the gap. Lagos had a Festival of Discovery that was held between April 26th and May 5th. This is to mark the period during the 16th century when the royalty entered and elevated Lagos to a city as well as the departure of the Navy and the battle of Alcacer Quibir. We took advantage of being in Lagos at the time to see some of the festivities. The parade through town that we saw included the peasants, jesters, musicians, and upper-class as the King rode into town. The town square included lots of vendors that brought you back to the ... read more

We forget the time is the exact same as British time in Portugal so we end up sleeping in a bit longer than anticipated. Jamie the surfing bar man from last night has been waiting on us for a few hours which I feel bad about, so we get ready as quick as possible and then head off with another one of the boys called Dave and also Sally, the only other female staff. Thankfully Matt has offered us to use his van, as I don't really think 3 surfboards would fit in Charlie. The rental is cheap- a board and wetsuit for a whole day for only 15 euros- its good having contacts! Jamie drives us to a beach about 20 mins away and when we get there the waves are quite ferocious and foreboding. ... read more

Well, as one of the cruisers on our dock so aptly put it, it is now time to cut the Velcro around the waterline on Tsamaya and head north to explore new places! Lagos has been known as the Velcro marina we understand why it has that reputation. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here taking advantage of the many benefits of the area. The marina has been a great place to meet cruisers from all over Europe and pick up fabulous tips of places to go. The area has been complete with ease of access to public transportation, a nice variety of restaurants, great places to walk to see the magnificent coastline and the bonus of being near our friends, Sandra and John. With a good size marina some of the added benefits are book ... read more

We set our alarm to get up earlier today so that we can take advantage of the free breakfast. In the end we snooze the alarm and make it down with 10 minutes left to spare. What greets us is the best breakfast selection I've seen (well certainly that we've seen based on our usual budget and choice of hotel). They have a huge selection of different cheeses, cold meats and bread- and not the supermarket own brand either. The bread is deliciously light and fluffy, not dry and tasteless. They also have hot options (very unusual in Europe) of eggs, bacon and sausages, and then a huge fruit platter with melon, watermelon, oranges, apples, strawberries and pears. And on top of that they have yoghurts of all flavours and a selection of fresh pastries. The ... read more

Just realized after posting our last blog that it is not good to write captions after midnight as the brain is not fully in gear. The 65' Oyster sailboat is a full 25 feet, not 15 feet longer than our 40' Caliber. One other positive of a 40' boat was clearly pointed out by our friend, Dave - we definitely are happy that we do not have 25 more feet of bottom to sand or paint! It was great having a chance to be out on the water and to experience what it was like to be on a 65', but we now know that we will take a 65' sailboat off our list of boats we might be interested in!!! For others of you just wanted to be sure to pass on another sunset photo ... read more

The last blog showed a few of the activities we did for enjoyment during the last 2 weeks of March since returning from the US. We filled the rest of the time with book exchanges, computer group get togethers where we shared ideas, caught up with friends, Sandra and John as well as numerous cruising friends and treating ourselves to eating out a few times at local restaurants. Between rainstorms we also managed to do the usual household errands such as going to the grocery store and doing laundry. On the morning of April 2nd everything changed; we had a beautiful sunny day with no wind – a perfect time to pull the boat. This was the first time we moved the boat since arriving in our slip on October 3rd. We were scheduled to be ... read more
