Oh what a long, long day! Flight from JFK to Berlin wasn't bad. I never sleep on flights, so that part was a little sucky. The food on the plan started great... and then I don't know what I had - probably the coleslaw - but I felt beyond ill. Hah. Great way to start. I found in interesting how everyone presumed I was German on the flight... I don't think I look overly German? Each steward(ess) addressed me in German first, followed by blank looks on my part. Even the girl sitting beside me started this epic convo... and I"m lie... English...? Francais? Haha. Landing in Berlin, it was raining and I still felt a little off, so there was no big desire to explore. I did however putter around the Reichstag area and walk ... read more

My time in Poland didn’t get off to the best of starts. The first place I had planned to stop off was the Masurian Lake District, which is not too far from the Lithuanian border. I managed to cross the border by train from Vilnius with no problems, but when I got to the first big city in Poland, Suwalki, I was told that the bus that I was expecting to catch didn’t actually run on a Monday, and in fact there were no buses until the following day. I had no choice but to find a hotel and spend the night in Suwalki, which although would definitely not win any beauty prizes, wasn’t that bad a city. I checked the bus timetable on line again at the hotel, which showed the bus should have been ... read more

A holiday in Gdansk... In early June there was a national holiday in Sweden which gave us a few days off from work. We then flew to Gdansk in northern Poland and visited a few places. The first day on this trip we remained in Gdansk itself. We walked around and enjoyed the lovely historical centre or, if you prefer, the old town. The old town was founded in the Middle Ages and was part of the trade union Hanseatic League which was a very powerful economical alliance in northern Europe from the mid 14th century to the late 16th century. The old town was badly damaged during World War II but was restored to its former splendour in the decades following the war. Today the city centre is lined with cafés, restaurants and ice cream ... read more

Just few months ago, Gdańsk was absolutely unfamiliar to me. I had no idea there is a city with that name and that beautiful appearance. Now, I cannot take all the images and memories I have had about Gdańsk out of my mind. They will be there, forever. Gdańsk is incredible. It has everything: an old town, a modern centre, medieval streets, 21st century highways... I have never seen any city that mixes everything in a very colourful way as Gdańsk does. Being there only for 3 days but that’s enough for me to love this city. Actually, my trip was a journey around the area of Tri-City (Trójmiasto), which includes Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia. A little bit information about this place: it’s located in the northern part of Poland, where the land meets the Baltic ... read more

Today we finally get to explore Gdansk! About the only thing that dragged us out of bed after only getting in a few hours earlier... that, and we had to checkout at 10am. Ula and Yella had crashed in our room, which meant we had a local guide to start the day. Our hostel was located right beside the Motlawa River, just down from where the Gdansk Crane stands, it’s the biggest crane in medieval Europe and the only one left in the world. It didn’t take us long to find a yummy cafe on the edge of the river for some brunch. We said good bye to Ula and Yella while they headed back home. After brunch we had a wonder down to the heart of the old town, starting with the Green Gate on ... read more

You know, leaving my Auckland life wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I think the trick is denial, and lots of it. After quitting my job, leaving my awesome Takapuna flat, selling my car, and having an utterly brilliant leaving party as well as mandatory leaving drinks the night before, I eventually get to where I'm saying goodbye to my family at the airport. It's only around here where that realisation sets in: I'm actually leaving the country! AAAH!! Where was I when I made this decision!? So, a full 48 hours of travelling and futile attempts at sleep later, and after being reunited with my long-lost friends James & Hannah, I found myself standing in the chilly night air of Gdansk in Poland. One term comes to mind when I think about ... read more

After a slow start to the year travel wise, I kicked off the travel for 2011 with 4 new countries in 11 days. Using the Easter long weekend and the Royal wedding/May bank holiday weekend as a great excuse, I fled the UK for 11 days, missing only 3 working days. Despite the lack of travel in 2011, I have managed to keep myself busy with Muay Thai, medieval sword fighting classes and of course, trying to get to as many Leeds games as I can. I was especially looking forward to this trip as my friend from New Zealand, Clay, had announced he was moving back to the UK and was arriving just in time to join Hannah and I on this jaunt across Eastern Europe. The trip started as I met up with Clay ... read more

The UK had more bank holidays in a row that most people knew what to do with! However, we decided it would be a perfect excuse to get a little off the tourist map and see the rather different sights and sounds of Eastern Europe.... We arrived into Gdansk, and after getting somewhat interrogated at immigration, I managed to get into the country – fourth in the queue and yet the last person in the whole plane to enter!? Pretty sure I don’t fit the classic terrorist profile? We didn’t really know how we were going to get to our hostel – not even sure if the buses were still running, but then an Australian accent pierced through the silence and convinced us it would be cheapest for all of us to get a taxi into ... read more

Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Chojnice September 23rd 2010

In Chojnice I met with Michał, my close friend from the former martial arts club. We practiced together and we drank much beer together. :-) Nowadays we could met and see each other what realle changed in our life. In Michał's life plenty things were changed, in mine maybe not so much. During this visit Michał led me through the town and even we undertook short excursion to Charzykowskie Lake. There is a well known resort in Poland, I heard before some positive opinion. Chojnice is just common town, not so excited but not boring. We found nice restaurant and had lunch, traditional Polish dish tasted me very much. I bought red teas there and I was a bit surprised we found tea shop. I'm drinking those teas from Chojnice in job. What else? I promised ... read more
