Afterwards I spent holiday together with Ania and Robert I decided to spend little time alone :-) I desired to visit my two friends whose live in Pomerania in north Poland, they invited too. Tomek lives in Gdańsk and Michał in Chojnice. I arrived at the morning of Wednesday 22th of September to Gdynia, a harbour in east part of Polish coast. Because I had a big advance - spare time before I met with Tomek - and I made up mind to see ORP Błyskawica in Gdynia. Nowadays ORP Błyskawica (Polish word "błyskawica" means lightning in English) is the oldest preserved destroyer in whole of the world. She was constructed in Cowes's shipyard (Isle of Wight - southern England) in 1936, in the next year she entried into the service in Polish Navy shortly before ... read more

Took a tour recommended by Ola - thank you Ola. The tour was excellent and our guide was wonderful. Konrad, apx. 75, was a child during Nazi occupation and a young man when the Russians occupied Poland so he has seen it all. He had some interesting stories to tell. First stop was Oliwa Cathedral where we got to hear beautiful organ music and look at the incredible wood carvings that surrounded the pipes. Then we drove by Lech Walesa’s house, which is pretty well hidden behind a fence and trees, but I was able to get a few pictures. Next we went sightseeing in Gdansk Old Town built in 997 A.D. with detailed talks about all the important buildings. This area was 80% destroyed at the start of WWII, but has been restored to its ... read more

Who knew that Poland is world class in windsurfing? I spent the afternoon in the sun. I was suppose to bicycle to Hel (google 'Hel, Poland") and I tried for awhile. But it was more enjoyable sitting in the sun watching the surfers go by.... read more

I am staying with Servas friends, Ewa and Bogumil, in Gdynia. This morning Bogumil dropped Ewa and I off at Sepot, a Victorian beach town, so that we could walk along the beach back to Gdynia. I think we walked over 10 kms along the Baltic Sea. It is really warm here, plus sixteen in the afternoons. The beaches were relatively empty. Sepot reminded me of Brighton, but much more toned down. The pier was empty and calm, though Ewa told me that it has games and rides during the summer holidays. The best thing about Ewa and Boumil's house is the pets, three dogs and cats; reminds me of home. It was great walking the dogs in the park yesterday. A couple more days in this area and I will head for Warsaw. The weather ... read more

What's better than lazing about and drinking beer in an expensive country? Lazing about and drinking beer in a cheaper country. So with 2 weeks off from university, I decided to implement this rather simple logic by spending my 2 weeks in Poland instead of Finland. Best decision ever (along with all my other great decisions) as I had a ball. I spent the first week on Poland's northern coast with my good friend Grzegorz, who lives in Gdynia; one of the "Three-City" area which also includes Gdansk and Sopot. The next week was spent in Krakow; Poland's centre of culture and beauty... but that will be in the next entry. The first step of my journey included going to Stockholm (again) in order to get my flight to Gdansk. For those not in the know, ... read more
