A short 40 min bus ride from Krakow is the town of Wielczka which is built around a huge salt mine, operating for 700 years, closed for extracting salt after a big flood in 1990. This was an excellent place to visit, good to buy the tickets before hand and we were glad when we came out that we’d gone for the 9am tour. All visitors have to go on a guided tour; it was a little rushed but informative. The mine is amazing, you have the sense of being in a big cave system, but all of it is hewn out of the rocks by man. Salt was the “white gold” of ancient times, being so valuable as a preservative, the men who worked the mines were wealthy, they were paid in salt. There was ... read more

Auschwitz ... in a word ... Grim! Auschwitz, the Nazi's largest and most efficient extermination camp, is located about an hours drive from Krakow. I don't usually do this, but I am going to provide you with some terminology. Otherwise, I think the following blog is unnecessarily confusing. I would like to note, however, what a brutal world we live in, when I have to make a clarifying distinction between two types of camps that should not exist at all. "Concentration Camps" were camps established by the Nazis to hold (or "contain"), without trial, labor leaders, opposition party leaders, communists, religious leaders, some Jews (as compared to all Jews), homosexuals, gypsies, captured prisoners and other people in a position to challenge Nazi authority, or whom the Nazis did not like. Many people died in these camps, ... read more

Travel allows you see differences, but it also allows you to observe similarities. It does not matter where you are in the world, when you combine a group of young women and a large (albeit harmless) spider, the ensuing chaos is pretty much the same. So today I took the Ice Train from Berlin to Warsaw, Poland (when discussing German trains I am really conflicted about whether to call them Fast Trains or Ice Trains ... both names are so very cool). I had a couple of hours in Warsaw before I caught a connecting train to Krakow, Poland, my final destination. The Warsaw Central Train Station is a particularly bleak place. It is underground and low-ceilinged, and is populated by seedy sex shops and sad little vendors selling a very strange assortment of goods. Not ... read more

I was in the killing fields in Cambodia a few months ago. I was surprised to learn that Pol Pot's regime killed 2-3 million people in Cambodia using brutal force. They didn't want to use bullets because they needed the bullets to shoot at their armed enemies. So, as truckloads of people were brought into the killing fields, they used clubs and knives to kill them. Whereas here in Auschwitz, the Nazis had enough bullets but decided to use deceit and indirection to kill the Jews, because they felt it was more efficient than bullets. When the Jews arrived in Auschwitz, a Nazi doctor would look at each as they walked by, and decide which ones he felt would be healthy enough to work for a few days, months, or weeks before killing them. All others ... read more

While in Krakow, I met a concert pianist who studied music at the University here in Krakow. She owns a flat here in the Jewish quarter. Although she is Jewish, not many of the people living in the Jewish quarter are Jewish. The Jews were all exterminated by the Germans as you know. Her ancestors survived the genocide because they were living in Moscow at the time. A few days later I met a visiting foreigner who was an employee of his foreign government. In one sentence, he thanked me as an American for freeing his grandfather from a concentration camp. If not for America, he said, his parents and his cousins would not exist. A few sentences later, he said something that still flabbergasts me. He said, “Not everything Hitler did was bad. He killed ... read more

Our daughters often refer to their mother,Gretchen,as the wind up toy doll, as she races here and there, always busy and wanting to get things done. But this morning we met her Polish equal in the shared kitchen!Boy,did this woman move around the kitchen, crashing and bashing things as she prepared a Polish breakfast for her husband while he just sat over in the dining area waiting for it to be delivered.Wish I could get away with that!Luckily we had set our breakfast up before she arrived into the kitchen in a whirlwind and we sat back and just watched gobsmacked. Gretchen had put together a walking tour of Krakow which would leave us very informed or as much as we could be in a day of the history of Krakow especially since WW2. With the weather looking ... read more

We had a very comfortable night at Modry Dom,the name of our overnight accommodation in Spisskie Bystre and we wished we had booked another night at least so we could spend time exploring the area which included many walking trails. However, this was not to be and Poland calls. There was an option of a straight run north to Krakow through Poprad on the R67 to the border and then the R49 in Poland. This wasn't for us though as the atlas had a scenic road marked further west into Poland and so we chose that route even though it was going to add another hour or so to the drive. As in Hungary we had to avoid the D1 motorway as we didn't buy a vignette for Slovakia for our one day stay in the country. There didn't ... read more

I had planned to visit people in Ostrava, Czech Republic as well as St. Petersburg Russia, so I ended up buying a return ticket from Toronto to Krakow, and another return ticket from Krakow to St. Petersburg. The idea was to visit the Czech Republic first for 2 weeks, then St. Petersburg for 2 weeks, and from there, fly back to Krakow, and then take the other return trip to Toronto. My tickets were booked in such a way that I only had one day in Krakow to my great regret in the end. Of all the places I visited, Krakow turned out to be my favourite. April 2, 2012. The flight heading to Krakow with Polish Airlines was late one hour and the pilot made up for lost time towards the end by flying 610 ... read more

DAY 1: I flew to Gatwick on the Thursday morning for our long weekend away, I got the red eye and made my way to central London. I met Gracie in Waterloo Train Station where we sat and had a catch up for a few hours until our train to London Luton. We boarded the train to London Luton and it was very easy to get there. But we still had a few hours to kill. So we decided to change our currency. In Poland they use the Polish Zloty which we knew nothing about. I had excepted to exchange £300 to Zlotyz, however we were advised otherwise and both took out £100 which was 500 Zlotyz. We then boarded our flight about about 5pm and were on our way. Both of us had taken hand ... read more

We left Levoča on an overcast day and headed to the pretty town of Kežmarok, a medieval walled town. Just as it started to rain, we left and headed towards the Tatra Mountains. We had a good view of them from Slovakia but they were shrouded in mist by the time we reached Poland. We stopped at the touristy town of Zakopane. It reminded me of Queenstown but without the view!! It probably had wonderful mountain views but we were not able to see them because of the cloud. After a good look around, Eileen purchased her sister a present then we were soon on our way. I felt relieved when we departed the crowded and touristy town and glad that we had decided not to stay there. We arrived at Apart Hostel in Krakόw at ... read more
