After leaving Auschwitz late yesterday, we drove to our next destination, the city of Krakow. Krakow is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River, the city dates back to the 7th century. Krakow has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural, and artistic life and is one of Poland's most important economic hubs. A legend attributes Kraków's founding to the mythical ruler Krakus, who built it above a cave occupied by a dragon. The city has grown from a Stone Age settlement, which began as a hamlet on Wawel Hill and was already being reported as a busy trading centre of Slavonic Europe in 965. In 1038, Kraków became the seat of the Polish government. By the end of the 10th century, the ... read more

Today was a long, good day in Krakow, Poland! I like Polandia ? Kamie is ready to come home but I was up and ready to go again just like usual. He slept-in… a little bit. We left at 9am for a tour to the Jewish Ghetto. The ghettos here do not mean what the ghettos in U.S.A. mean, necessarily. Here’s one example of what happened in Krakow, Poland that also happened ALL OVER EUROPE…. Hitler cleared an area of Krakow of all the Polish citizens with no explanation. It was approximately a four-block area where approximately 3,000 Polish citizens had lived. Then, Hitler rounded-up all the Jews in the city and moved them into this one area – called the Jewish Ghetto. They put approximately 16,000 Jews in the same buildings where previously, 3,000 Polish ... read more

Elie Wiesel wrote the autobiographical book, "Night", based on his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps, Auschwitz and Buchenwald. It is impossible for me as a one day visitor to Auschwitz to try and encapsulate in a brief blog entry, the horrors that took place in this place, where for hundreds of thousands of inmates, all hope was lost. Arriving at the Polish town of Oświęcim (Auschwitz was the German name for the town), we headed to the ticket office at Auschwitz 1 Camp. I had tried to book tickets to visit Auschwitz unsuccessfully last night. On checking at the ticket office, we were advised that we could take a free bus to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the main Nazi Extermination Camp, and then catch the bus back to Auschwitz 1 to take ... read more

Two short getaway breaks in the UK together and one mini caravan holiday in Norfolk with Fiona's two children and my Mum and Stepdad, Fiona and I were eager to travel to a country we both hadn't been to before. There were many European cities on the list but we narrowed it down to Krakow. I had seen many travel articles with stunning pictures of Krakow and some friends recently visiting it had put it high on my bucket-list. Our trip didn't start off too well as our plane was showing delays of 20 mins so I assumed we had a bit more time before we needed to board the plane. Turns out we didn't as I was about to pop into a shop before we headed towards the boarding gate and just looked at the ... read more

Taking the night train from Prague to Krakow was certainly an experience! You have to reserve what’s called a ‘couchette’, which is basically when the compartments to seat 6 people are converted into four beds. It’s like a bunk bed each side with a tiny walkway down the middle. The train itself looked like some old rusted Slavic freight train, with the steel-framed windows that pull down to half way so you can lean out of them, and doors in the main walkway and sleeping compartments with horizontal metal bars across – so you feel like you’re in a strange horizontal prison for the night. The ‘bathroom’ is entirely avocado green plastic from top to bottom, apart from some rusted pipes under the toilet, and has no running water (at least that I could find!). The ... read more

Today was my last full day in Poland! We left Zamość and headed for the wooden churches. What should have taken us 3 1/2 hours, took almost 5 hours due to traffic and construction. The first wooden church we saw was St. Michael the Archangel in Binarowa. This was built in the 1500s, and was had the most beautiful interior decor. The other 2 churches - The Filial Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob in Sekowa and The Greek Catholic Parish Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Owczary. These churches, while pretty and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, were not as stunning as the first church. After our visits, we headed for the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Luckily we caught the last english tour at 7 pm. We descended 65 ... read more

Today was our last full day in Kraków, so we had to finish out our list of places to see and museums to visit. The first place we went to was the Wawel Castle and Cathedral. The castle was not open today, but the cathedral was. We took a tour around the cathedral, climbed the bell tower, saw the crypt, and visited the Cathedral Museum, where there are many papal items from Pope John Paul II and others. The bell tower was only 70 steps to the top, but these steps were narrow and tall. As compared to St. Peter's Dome and the bell tower in Florence, this was not a bad climb. The view at the top was amazing, and we were able to see a 360 degree view of Kraków, my favorite being Old ... read more

Today, I said goodbye to the beautiful city of Rome and headed to Kraków to meet my parents. I woke up very early because we needed to be out of the rooms by 8 am, but I was able to get some rest on the plane. It is so interesting how laid back, yet unorganized the airport was. I flew out of a smaller airport through Ryanair, and when it came time to line up, there was no announcements. Luckily I saw the line starting to form so I jumped in line quickly. Everyone waited to board for a long time because the plane was running late, so I stood in line with my bags, and my shoulders started to hurt. Once I arrived in Kraków, I was greeted by my parents after baggage claim. It ... read more
