I have now been here for 4 days (wow - it seems like longer) and I think I may have a friend. By this I mean I have someone who actually talks to me in English when I sit down at meals! She is one of the patients in the group I am working with, a teenage girl with cerebral palsy and mobility issues. We bonded over Harry Potter - what else would you expect? She taught me the words "Humlesnurr" (Hoom-le-snooreh) which means Dumbledore, and Hermine (Her-meen-ah) which is Hermione. I know right? bffs. She also taught me a lot about Norway FOR EXAMPLE: Here, on Christmas, (WHICH IS CELEBRATED DEC 24th).. apparently Norwegian Jesus was born early.. kids wait until the END of the day to open presents! But she told me that instead ... read more

Valnesfjord Helsesportssenter is an institution that works with people of all ages with disabilities. Norway has an amazing system of healthcare, things are very expensive here, lots of tax. However, going to the hospital for any reason, or any time of medical thing or rehabilitation is all free - you don't even need a health card. Norwegians think that the idea of "suing" other people is crazy. Seriously - they don't understand it. But the good news is that they think it's all an American thing.. as one girl said "the americans - aren't they the ones who walk around suing each other" I try to encourage this way of thinking. Anyways, this institution is free for people with disabilities - it would be prescribed by their physician and then they come here to stay. The ... read more

Telenor. Imagine, if you will, innocently trying to fill up your pay-as-you-go plan. first, you go to the website that's not in english, and 2 hours later, courtesy of google translate and some stellar intuitive skills, you get to the part where you have to pay.. then it won't let you. Then, you still with me? ,, you try to find the number to call. Since your pay as you go plan has run out of money, you have to use the SIM card from back home.. i can only imagine what this costs.. when you get to the automated system that...you guessed it... is only in Norwegian. My strategy was to start at 1, and press 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9, and then 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Somewhere along there this combination of random numbers got me to a person.. who explained ... read more

A few minutes ago I realized I was about 45 minutes early, hence getting out the computer. Our last day in Svolvaer was a gloomy one, cold and wet all day long. We still managed to hike down into town with our Dutch friend Paul who was also staying at our Bed and Breakfast, walk around, get soaked, look at some of the ... read more

Bodo This morning we were woken just in time to go on deck to see the little rock with an illuminated globe on it which marked the beginning of the Arctic Circle. It was bitter and snowing a little. We had breakfast and then returned to the upper deck for a small ceremony (involving Neptune for some reason) to mark the Arctic passage. There was a prize for the best guess of our time to cross the line. We were way off in our guesses. Admittedly it was difficult to guess because the ship was delayed during the night by the need to stop at one of the small ports to take a pregnant woman off who was about to give birth! Everything seems to happen on this voyage. After the prize was presented there was ... read more

Remembering some of my previous jaunts around the world, I just happened to think about the stuff I lost while in Norway.... One day while I was hard at work, solving crime, at the Army Criminal Investigation office in Hanau, Germany, I received a call about a trip to Bodo Norway. I had not been to Norway so it sounded like a good deal to me. The call was from one of my buddies on the Protective Services detail at CID Second Region Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. I was one of fifteen Army CID Special Agents chosen to fly to Norway to assist in the protection of the then (1970’s) Secretary of Defense (Mr. Brown) while he attended a NATO conference. I arrived in Oslo Norway where I met up with the other fourteen Agents. We ... read more

Heej vriendjes ! Love you all en tot snel :) Lucas en Simon... read more

Naast me ... read more

Dear Norway, Today, this morning, is my last morning here in your little city above the Arctic Circle. These four months have gone by quite quickly haven't they? It has been a very interesting time and first off I want to say thank you for all that you have done for me lately. You see, I spent some time here being homesick, dreaming of the Mendenhall Towers that I had left behind, and it was only a little while ago that I looked out over at your mountains and felt that same feeling of comfort that the ones in Juneau bring me. You are a truly gorgeous land -- a beautiful place that I feel privileged to have called home for these four months. And you have brought my some hardships, comforted me when I have ... read more

This entry is not about traveling, it's not about the things I've done over the past week or the new friends I've made or the laughs we have shared. It's about an old event, an old friend, one that passed away exactly 2 years and 3 days ago today. And when the date was pointed out to me earlier this afternoon, I just stopped and stared. I wasn't home, I was in Sweden on the actual anniversary of her death, but on that day (Sunday), I didn't know the date or the time or have any plans. I still thought it was November. And perhaps that is a good thing, perhaps it shows the closure I have made and the progress that comes after someone you idolize has left this world. But when I got to ... read more
