So I am a little behind in my updates, but last Thursday was Thanksgiving and it was by far the best day here in Bodo. It didn't start of so well as I just got agitated by some things of the past and it ruined most of the first half of my day. It just got me thinking too much and feeling bad about things. But around 4pm, when the people started showing up and I was running around helping Libby and Destinee get everything set up, that's when the day improved to become one of the best I've had since being here in Norway. I missed most of the planning since I was gone in London, but our day started around 10am as Libby put the 7kg bird in the oven. Then later, Destinee started ... read more

Life in Norway...well here I am, writing yet another blog about this beautiful Scandinavian country and only two days after I wrote my last one. I guess writing kind of helps me, helps me clear my mind too. And I'm just sitting here in the comforts of my room, waiting on my Russian friend. Have you ever waited on a Russian? Well they are quite the characters as they give you a time, end up being about 30 minutes late, and then spend 10 minutes defending why it was reasonable that they should be late because we really didn't have to be there at the time they said in the first place. It's a very complicated web they weave. Nevertheless, I am sitting here waiting as we are off to buy some Tuborg and then come ... read more

So today was NOT the best day...actually, it was downright sad. My roommate and I both were on the verge of tears and we haven't seen the worst of it yet. Today was our last Norwegian language class with Kit. I went to the afternoon session while my roommy and some of my later class favorites also went to the morning session. So in the afternoon one, there were only about 9 people and we had a short class with Kit before getting some parting advice from her. Then she took some pictures of all of us and Lucia, the Italian girl, made us some food so we all ate these sweet balls of sugar, cheese, and flour. And Kit looked a little sad as she said, "Ha det bra" one last time. Then it was ... read more

There was a spark of inspiration, a need to write a few hours ago. What was it that brought this on? Well, I was watching Julie and Julia, sewing part of the strap on my travel backpack and sipping a warm cup of tea when I suddenly felt the urge...the need. Could it be because the heroine of this movie, the whiny yet determined Julie, was blogging about her cooking triumphs and following the recipes of Julia Child, all while throwing in her own thoughts and experiences? Or could it be that I wanted to shed my thoughts and clear my wandering mind after a day like today? Who knows, but the movie definitely played a part in the inspiration. And no, it was not the urge to cook or to watch more Meryl Streep movies ... read more

It's Sunday, one of my used to be favorite days of the week and I am back to the comforts on my little humble home in Hoglimyra. A part of me really wishes I was still out traveling, out occupying my mind, moving, doing stuff, seeing new things, taking pictures, wearing myself out walking all over a city, and just out doing. Instead, I'm being a bum now and writing this blog before I tackle my homework that I put off. Today has been a relatively nice morning so far though. I started it waking up on the train numerous times. Apparently in Europe, we set our clocks back today so at 3a.m., they stopped the train at one station and sat there for an hour to stay on schedule with the rest of the stations. ... read more

As I walked to class this morning, after a brisk night that covered the layer of ice with a nice layer of powdery fresh snow, I kind of zoned out while Libby and Brad talked about fishing. Now I love fishing, but these two...they live to fish. And they have so many fish in their freezer that their apartment now smells like fish. So as they talked about it and I remembered the fact that I left home exactly two months ago from today, I couldn't help but think that life...is kind of like walking on the snowy/icy ground below. You can be too timid and shuffle your feet, hoping never to lose your grip, catching your breath in your throat when you feel even a margin of your foot slip, and tensing your stomach muscles ... read more

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain Today is Sunday, one of my favorite days to just relax at home and have time for myself. But with the sun beckoning me, I had to go out and see it even though the ground was an icy mess and the destination was a good 25 minute walk from here and there was a pile of Norwegian homework calling my name. And as I walked across the rocks down by the bay (or MorkvedButka), I thought of everything that has happened this week. In two days, it will be ... read more

It's snowing! Okay well, it was snowing last night at approximately 3a.m. when I was walking home from the student pub, Samfunnet, after a very fun and interesting night with some old friends and some new. It's been a LONG, quiet week here in Bodø. And it all started after coming back from an exciting trip, but the weather had taken quite a turn for the worse. All week has been hail, snow/slush, rain, and even a short thunder and lightning storm (which I had no idea that it did here so it scared the hell out of me) so I've been slowly catching up on my homework, researching grad schools, and studying for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). I ended up dropping one of my classes but can now spend more time trying to figure ... read more

It's Sunday and another rainy day here in Norway. The fun-loving Norwegians are not their usual boisterous selves as Fall really starts to set in, it's getting dark much earlier now than a month ago, and we have all been pushed back by the wind. My roommate is really starting to feel the effects and I'm trying to keep her from coming down with S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder). This weather is not entirely different from Juneau, but the quantity of the rain and the wind is so much more intense that I've found myself soaked to the bone a few days already this week, dragging myself back to my room with my teeth chattering from being so cold. I've only felt that a few times in Juneau in the 4 years that I was there. Here...it's ... read more

Hilsen fra Bodo. It's nighttime here again in the small Norwegian city above the Arctic Circle. And today was not an over-active day by any standards, but not my slowest day either. It started a little too early and I had a bit of trouble pulling myself out of bed at 7a.m. to get to my one and only class today, Norwegian language, at 8:15a.m. And after putting in my eyes (aka my contacts), I popped open my computer only to find that the internet was down. Sad day...so I took my time getting ready and played some tunes then headed down to campus with my Missouri roommie. It was actually a very nice walk and one that I'm really starting to enjoy. Of course, it sucks on rainy days as the rain here is INSANE! ... read more
