Today was a really casual day. I didn't get out of the house until around noon, and spent the rest of the day buying some essentials and getting lunch. I went to the Dutch version of target which is called Hema. Unfortunately it doesn't have Target's prices and I spent about 5 euro for a notebook. We ate at a place called the Crea Cafe which is the university's student center's cafe I guess. We got there during happy hour prices, and got really inexpensive, really good food. I had a brie and tomato tosti. A tosti is like a toasted sandwich. Sorry I don't have anything really interesting to report. Tomorrow classes start ! By the way, being here makes me feel ridiculously mono-cultural. Everyone here speaks a minimum of four languages...Dutch, French, German, and ... read more

Sorry this entry is getting out so late. After a manhunt to get an Ethernet cable for my room, I found out that there was a problem with the wall jack in my room. It’s really loose (hopefully by the time I post this it will have been really loose) and there’s no network connection. My computer works in other rooms, just not mine. We don’t have wireless in this building, and I’m freakishly far from the school computer lab, so I’m hoping it gets fixed soon. Anyways, the last two days have been a whirlwind so I probably wouldn’t have been able to write much anyways. (UPDATE: my super amazing…bathroom mate? Just gave me a cord that works) Thursday was the first official day of orientation. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what we did other ... read more

Hello Again! I spent last weekend in Amsterdam and it was a fantastic time!!! It is definately an interesting city with lots to see! 9 of us from the exchange program hopped on an overnight bus and travelled the 8 hours to Amsterdam. The bus ride was long and the sleep not so comfortable, but it was a good way to travel because you go overnight so you don't waste any of your day travelling. We got to Amsterdam at about 6:30 a.m. so we just killed some time by sitting in a cute cafe having breakfast until everything opened. We then headed to the Anne Frank house, but I didn't go in because I had already been in it a couple of years ago- but it is definately a must see if you go to ... read more

Amsterdam is a ridiculously walkable city. Jacqueline (travel buddy) and I walked from the east end of Amsterdam to the west end in about thirty minutes. Well, we could have walked in thirty minutes, but because we had to stop every two minutes to take a picture and get all giddy and squealy about how amazingly cute it all was, the walk took closer to an hour. The cuteness factor is unreal...with all these amazingly quaint houses, cozy cafes, and flea markets. We're starting to figure our way around the city. We're using the Centraal Station, the Waag, and the Amsterdam square to orient ourselves and it seems to be working. We're finding our way around the city without consulting the map too much. So we woke up around 7 this morning and had a yummy ... read more

I'm finally in Amsterdam!!!!! Please please please ignore how poorly this post willl probably be written. I haven't slept since I left, so I've been up for well over 24 hours. Anyways, the flight over here wasn't too horrific. Between the movies, talking, and reading, I was able to pass the the 11 hours without too much trouble. So...first impressions of Amsterdam: -I love the weather. I'm a huge fan of coldish weather and overcast skies, and Amsterdam provides exactly that. -OMG Amsterdam is so freakn cute. It is JUST like the postcards and all the pictures. There are tons upon tons of little shops and botiques and bakeries lining canals. My travelling partner and I spent a few hours just wandering around and taking it all in. Literally, just take four steps in any directiona ... read more

The hanging of my mezuzah made my six month move to Amsterdam official. Today I hung my mezuzah. A big thank you to Jawina for the directions to the Winkel (Jewish stuff store), Tina the volunteer at the Winkel for helping me, Julia, Tamara and Ross for attending the ceremony and Ross again for documenting it.... read more

Amsterdam: The city that epitomizes all of the Netherlands and both confirms and rejects all preconceived ideas about the country. You know what I mean. Looking back, I realize how fitting it was that I visited Amsterdam during my last year as a teenager/my last year of excusable immaturity/"the year of the crunk" (according to Kyle.) Amsterdam does not disappoint. We arrived in Amsterdam around 10pm on Friday night. On the train I realized that I had forgotten my ATM card and only had 45 Euro for the weekend. At first I panicked, but I soon realized how much there is to do without spending a lot of money. Laura, Nicole and I had to find the hotel. (Meaghan had arrived earlier in the day and was eagerly awaiting our arrival.) Basically, we hitchhiked a tram ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_2QN.html This past weekend I was in Amsterdam. The Netherlands. It's been my dream to go here for I can't even remember how long. And I finally did it!!!! It definitely came at a price, but I enjoyed nearly every minute of it, which is good because my wallet did not. :) No, there's nothing I would take back and that is what this experience is all about isn't it? We left the manor on Thursday evening to take the train into London so we would already be there for when our flight took off at 6 am the next day. However, this clever tactic left us with one option. Sleeping in the Airport. Terrible Terrible experience and really do not ever want to do this again. Seriously, who spends the night sitting up in uncomfortable ... read more
