Aviad and Sophie arrived around 22h and picked me up on the way to their hotel, which they booked off of Groupon. The hotel was just past lala land but served its purpose. We ate a delicious restaurant called Cafe Sirocco just off Rue Cartier where we shared a plate of 25 tapas and some tartar. Shawna and Eric picked us up there and we headed to Beaugarte for lots of dancing. The next morning we woke up and set off for traineau de chien, a.k.a. dogsledding. Picking up some Timmy's bagels, coffees and chocolate milks, we were ready for the day ahead. After some wonky directions on my part, we arrived at Pourvoir du Lac Beauport (www.pourvoiriedulacbeauport.com) for our dogsledding. It was awesome!!! We split up into tandems and after a 5 minute demo set ... read more

The semester concluded with a bang and with some great new friends. After my last exam Wednesday, I headed over to Hugo's where we light the Chanukah candles and had some drinks consecrating the completion of the semester and my law degree. Afterwards we went to the P'tit Grenouille for some dancing and live music. Thursday was for recovering and packing until the boys went for dinner at Ocean Grill, a bring your own wine on Chemin Ste-Foy. The company was fantastic, the food mediocre and the service horrible. From there we went to Maurice on the Grand-Allée, one of Quebec City's largest and most famous clubs for the end of semester party. A great send off. But no night out is complete without the breakfast crew gathering for one final meal. Back to Cochon Dingue ... read more

Gali came to visit me in Quebec City during my second week. It was a great way to start the semester since we were able to explore the city together and do some of the touristy stuff. She arrived mid-day and we quickly headed out towards Parc national Jacques-Cartier for a picnic and afternoon hike. After driving for just over an hour, we entered the provincial park and found a nice spot (around marker KM 12) for a picnic lunch. We took our time under the sun surrounded by the green scenery and rolling river. After the picnic we drove out to KM 16 where the trail "Les Loups" starts. On the way, we saw some cars pulled over and curious to see what the fuss was all about, we pulled over too and there was ... read more

I was able to go on a few day trips during my semester in Quebec City. The surrounding areas are beautiful and rich with culture. This blog is intended to help people who are planning similar day trips or day excursions. When I tried to find information - there was not much. Hopefully this will help. Hiking in Parc National de la Jacques Cartier Parc National de la Jacques Cartier is a provincial park about 1.5 hours north of Quebec City. The drive is easy and there was no traffic except for on the 40 and 440 when you return to Quebec City during rush hour. The park is well marked and laid out. About 10km into the park there is a welcome center with an information desk and small shop. There is also the option ... read more

Two international flights and 30 hours later, we landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport at about 17h00 local time on August 28th, 2011. Following disembarkation, we went through the customs formalities and passed through round one of Canadian Immigration, we then collected our bags and passed through the second immigration check where we handed in our “white slip” and had that moment of uncertainty as to whether today was going to be the day that we were pulled over to have our bags checked. Luckily today was not that day and we passed through the first set of doors, where we were to put our baggage back on the belt so it can be loaded onto our final Montreal bound flight. As we walked through the first set of doors, we were welcomed into Canada by ... read more

Departing from Hanoi we set off for the 4 hour mini-van ride to Halong Bay where our 3 day, 2 night cruise departed from. The beauty and uniqueness of this place cannot be described in words but we'll try... After the 4 hour ride, we set sail through Halong Bay on a motorized "junk" sailboat steering through freighters, tug boats and other ships. As we received our welcome watermelon fruit smoothies - Seth was in heaven... we were already able to see some of the over 1,960 islets of the greater Bay area. Stunning! From afar they appeared as a mountainous range, however, as we neared closer they were in fact massive rocks somewhat covered in greenery jutting out of the water and peaking at heights up to 330 feet. We were on a ship called ... read more

We arrived in Hue at about 6pm after a beautiful 4 hour busride through mountains, beaches and small towns along the eastern Vietnamese Coast. We checked into our 18$ a night accommodation, Huenino Hotel, where we stayed for one night. Upon arrival, we were given watermelon slices and egg sandwiches, also, the staff were so courteous and the rooms were clean - thanks to trip advisor for the suggestion. That evening we walked to the Perfume River, which has played a vital role in shaping Hue's history. It was very pretty, having a long boardwalk lined with street vendors. We then walked a little longer and opted for a 45 minute $5 foot massage. Following that, we had a tasty dinner, which was composed of 4 coke lights, 2 Hue style Rice pancakes filled with tofu ... read more

We arrived in Danang bright and early following a short however turbulent flight. Other than a sticky substance covering Gali's backpack (we were compensated 10$ to go and clean it) things were all good and we were ready to tackle another Vietnamese town. We boarded our hotel transport, which drove us 30 minutes to Hoi An - the town of tailors. After checking into the 4 star Hoi An Pacific Hotel we jumped onto the complimentary hotel bicycles, which were our main mode of transportation for our 3 day 2 night Hoi An stay. Ideally located, our hotel is right in the middle of the beach and old town, about a 2.5 km bikeride either way. First stop, laundry drop-off (Thank you Vietnam airlines for sponsoring all our laundry cleaning this whole trip - the $10 ... read more
