I started yesterday by heading to the Anne Frank Haus early as i had been instructed to do, i went at 9 am when it opened. The mueum was really powerful, laid out exactly as it had been in 1943. As you are walking on the second floor you can really hear the footsteps above you. The actual hiding place is not big, but not as tiny as i imagined it. although after 3 years i can it probobly started to get quite closterphobic. The saddest part is how close to liberation Anne and her sister died... Walked around the canals a bit diggesting the info, then went to get lunch. i love a town where one of the sandwich's being offered, for a E1.90 is Tartaar. Yup tatar, my favorite way to eat a steak. ... read more

So I got the last train for the night train from Copenhagen to Duisburg Germany. (i have not been able to locate it on a map, my best guess is that it is near Dusseldorf and not too far from Colonge). The seat happened to be in a 6 person smoking cabin... that did not have beds. The 3 Russian-Swedes to my left and across were quite drunk... well 2 were, and the 3rd was ok, not nearly as sketchy as his friends. To my right were a pair of 18 year old Danish boys en route to Amsterdam. One was a chain smoker, but a nice guy, the other was silent ansd stayed up reading all night. Two of the russians passed out immediately and the one sitting next to the not sketchy one fell ... read more

My vacation to Holland was slowly winding down so the last 2 days I spent in Amsterdam. I thoroughly enjoyed Amsterdam and one characteristic of Amsterdam is there is a lot of bicycles! I even saw "suits" riding their bikes to work which I thought was pretty cool. Another thing I enjoyed when I was in Amsterdam, is most of my dinners I ate outside. The weather was pleasant, I don't think I ever saw one fly, which is a true luxury! I had a variety of food, ranging from italian, indian, to dutch. One place that I will recommend is The Pancake Bakery. The building is a 17th century warehouse and it is a 2 minute walk from Anne Frank's house. They serve over 75 different types of pancakes. I had apple pancakes and they ... read more

In 1995 my friend was telling me that when he was on his way to safari in Africa, they had a layover in Amsterdam. Dave told me how beautiful it was flying into Amsterdam because he could see all of the tulip fields. He knew that tulips were one of my favorite flowers and had given me a couple of postcards from Amsterdam. I decided that at some point, I'd have to add Holland to my list of travels. Fast foward to late 2002, I was surfing the web and there was a travel special that was so darn good. The catch is, the choice was either Paris or Amsterdam. I wanted both, but I decided to visit Amsterdam. I knew I wanted to go during April or May to catch the tulips in full bloom. ... read more

Eurorail 2002 - Photos from: Amsterdam, Breda & Bruges... A 3 week escapade on Eurorail and night trains beginning in Amsterdam, then journeying through Paris to Lyon. After that, onto the Cote d'Azure through Marseilles to camp (and enjoy the "tent fever") in Antibes, Cannes, Nice and Monte Carlo before riding the North Mediterranean coast to Barcelona. After that, a mother of a train ride through France and Belgium to land just back across the Southern border of the Netherlands again to revisit an old stomping ground: Breda. From there, a penultimate jaunt up to Bruges then home from Brussels.... phew!!... read more

Like other European capitals, Amsterdam certainly has a distinct atmosphere defined by its architecture. Its sedated pace is created not by the overflowing coffee shops, but by the locution - boats inching down the canals, bike lane with long limbed Dutch riding to work, streetcars grinding along the tracks, ususally leaving only one tight lane for cars to squeeze through. The museums are quite good but I recommend walks outside of the city center, and a trip to Rotterdam for a more authentic window into Dutch life. There are more photos below.... read more
