Ulm - Munich - Verona - Venice (Train) 20 July 2006 With the idea of maximising our Eurail Ticket, we decide to head to Venice, Italy for a couple of days, before we meet up with our friends Linton and Clare in France. Venice is one of those cities that most people dream of going to; beautiful old buildings built on and reflected in canals, meandering cobblestone alleys where the sound of church bells echo off the walls calling you towards piazzas full of beautiful people, men in striped t-shirts pushing gondolas while singing Dean Martin songs….. ahhh, oh so romantic. Its just a shame that it is so revered because in summer it’s so full of tourists and so hot that I think it’s lost a bit of it’s charm (that could explain why most ... read more

Well since I last wrote we have travelled from Spain through the French Riviera and onto Italy. Each travelling day is very long and the air conditioning on the bus means that everyone now has"contiki cough" a proper medical condition I am told, it happens on every tour. It is a nagging cough and that is all no other sickness involved. The french Riviera is stunning. We stayed halfway between Nice and Cannes. I decided to go to Nice for the day and walk around there. The water is crystal clear and it was very hot. Did manage to do a bit of shopping - even bought a dress shock horror. Skirts and dresses are the only way to go here as it is too hot for anything else. We went to the beach in Biot ... read more

Ciao again family and friends This is the continuation of 'The Italian Blog' dating back to early May 2006. After farewelling Dawn, Allan and Kim on the western side of Italy (Mediterranean Sea) it was back onto the train for a journey across the country to the north-eastern coast (Adriatic Sea). My destination this time: Venice! (I'm actually writing this from St. Petersburg or "Venice of the North" in Russia and it's now July, better late than never!). Unfortunately I had started to come down with a virus about now (within a few days I was to completely lose my voice) so I decided to treat myself to a hotel (instead of the usual hostel) and found one very close to the railway station in Mestre so I could walk there easily and have my own ... read more

Firstly and update on Vienna. The last day that we had there was spent just walking around, even though had a great time seeing all the old buildings and learning about them. We both didnt know that Austria came about as part of the downfall of the Roman Empire, and you can see the roman influence all around Vienna. We went to the Lippanzaner Museum which was cool, was more about the horses in the Spanish Riding School than the actual school. The train journey to Venice was long and early - started at 6.30am. We both fell asleep near straight away, i woke up an hour later to find us in the Alps, where most of the journey from then on was. They look better than they do in the films and postcards - wish ... read more

O.K., it's been a while, but we're back! And there's a lot to recap, so I will start and soon, Jesse will finish. Picking up from Amsterdam...Not the best story, but here goes. Night 1: We were lugging our huge bags around all day because we were planning on staying at a campsite outside the main part of the city and could not find any lockers to store our luggage. So, we wondered with a lot of weight being carried around, and decided that since it was my birthday, and we were in Amsterdam, we would try a brownie...sorry, Abba. We finished the brownie and headed to the campsite. Now, neither of us smoke, but we thought we'd be fine...When Jesse's face started to turn ashy white and her lips and eyes became blue and cold ... read more

Gotta love overnight trains. Our seats were occupied by people who were fast asleep so we had the fun job of waking them up & sending them on their way. It was a 6 seater compartment & sleeping was a chore. At around 5am 2 old ducks opened the door & were claimimg seats. A drawn out struggled ensued, just what you need at that hour ! Eventually the old ducks won & took there seats...very uncomfortable. We arrived in Venice at 9am & began the hunt for our hostel. The first thing you notice is the canals & then the lack of cars. It is a very cool place & everyone travels by foot, gondola, or boat. The streets are a maze & the multitude of little bridges add to the confusion. There is some ... read more

Venice was absolutely beautiful and definitely the most unique place we visited. We stayed 3 nights in a small bed and breakfast right near the theater. The view from our window? A meandering canal. If the windows were open, we could hear the Gondoliers singing ¨Santa Lucia¨ Every morning began with a nice cup of coffee and breakfast. The first day in Venice we visited the tourist hotspot, St Marks Square, the cathedral, the Dogas Palace, the Rialto bridge and took a tour of the grand canal. We also had the pleasure of seeing a small production of Verdi´s ¨La Traviata.¨ The opera was held in a venetian palace where each act took place in a different room. Other highlights of Venice included lots of public displays of affection, four dollar bottles of water and going ... read more

If I don't come home in August, it is because I have run away to Venice. We came in by train to Venice on July 4th. No fireworks for us this year. Once we got into Venice, we had to take a waterbus to Lido where we stayed. We had dinner and stood outside one of the many open air cafes with the Italians to watch the German-Italy game. We were totally going for Germany (silently, as not to provoke any of the Italians standing around - they were incensed!). Sadly, Germany lost when Italy scored at the very end. Everyone around us when crazy, jumping up and down, chairs overturned, the usually riding down the streets on the mopeds honking the horns, etc. Everything we've come to expect from Europeans and their football. The next ... read more

So I have arrived in Athens safely! After the worst ferry ride of my life, with no sleep, I arrived in Patras and caught the three hour bus to Athens. Once here I found that my hostel was overbooked so they sent me elsewhere, which was also over booked, so finally got a bed at about 7pm last night. As you can imgaine I was in a GREAT mood! Met Jane and Anita in town last night and went for a fabulous meal. Early night as I have a ferry tonight (AGAIN!!!) to Santorini! Cant wait, and I am sure the ferry will be more tolerable with other passengers! Also my mate Lucy from Rome is going to be on the FERRY....yay! I have just booked my flight back to London which is a little depressing....oh ... read more

Hello! Well, we are just finishing our time in Venice- we leave our hotel tomorrow morning bright and early (at 5:15 AM) and head to Munich. Our hotel here in Venice was our first experience with a small, private residence. It is simple, but adequate, with several little quirky things about it such as having to turn on the electricty with the key (and you must turn it off before you leave the room.) The staff is very friendly and helpful though, so that is wonderful! Today we wandered all around Venice, and actually never got lost (save one little trip.) We visited Murano and got to see a beautiful vase and glass horse being made. I had never seen glass be blown before, so that was really cool! Not to mention that the shop had ... read more
