Hello to one and all, We are officially in Italy! Actually we got into the country on the 1st, first we were in the Cinque Terre national park. Beautiful. It is comprised of 5 little towns connected by a hiking trail, it is absolutely amazing. Picture little towns of multicoloured houses all attached with dark green shutters slapped onto a cliffside with beautiful dark blue ocean... mmmm... and blue blue sky. Wow it was amazing! We did the full 9km hike through all of the villages on our first full day there. We were hurting but very proud of ourselves afterward! The second and final day there we caught a ferry that runs through to all the towns, went to the last town Manorolo (sp), rented some beach chairs and sunbathed. So relaxing, and in the ... read more

I swear they're everywhere. Pigeons. At San Marco, flying over your head by the Rialto, visiting you at the Doge's Palace, and even at the Accademia, whiel you're trying to visit some museums. Hmpf. But regardless, Connie and I are having a wonderful time in Venice, even with the pigeons. For the first time since our arrival in Europe, the weather has been nice (Gasp!). Our time in Venice was filled with beautiful blue skies and light fluffy clouds; it also happened to be 70 degrees outside, too, thankyouverymuch. So alltogether, Connie and I have had a wonderful time in Venice. I'm pretty sure Connie would say it's been her favorite city thus far. :) Highlights of our trip included: The Peggy Guggenheim Musem: they have that really cool Magritte piece I like in there. Venice was amazing. I think it may have been my favorite part of all of Italy. We took a trip on the canals, the water taxi through the city, and a gondula ride. We also looked through the 10000000 glass shops because Venice glass is known worldwide. It is a city that words cannot describe and was much more exciting than Rome or Florence. I also had a run in with the law in the morning before getting my train to Venice. When I was on my bus down the hill from my campsite, which was real tents this time, I forgot to validate my ticket on the bus. All of a sudden like 5 people stormed the bus and started checking tickets, and I handed mine over, but it wasnt validated. It was a 25 ... read more

I'm writing at an Internet cafe in Venice. The city is actually pretty small. I heard everyone gets lost here, but Phuong and I have been navigating it quite well and haven't gotten too disoriented. I don't think this city is as pretty as any of the others we have been to, and there's not much to do besides shopping, but the people here are incredibly nice and helpful. I got a haircut (I'll try to post that picture here tomorrow!) that I love. It wasn't as pricy as I thought (20 Euros), and it's cute, chic. I think I look like the character Claire from the movie The Breakfast Club. Tomorrow evening, we leave for Vienna. I'm excited for all the coffee!... read more

Week 2.5 15th May A new week and more discovering! After our hiccup on Friday we hit the road to Lucca and Pisa. These places are about an hour and a half away. Lucca was an amazing walled town with many laneways and beautiful shops. There were very few cars inside the walls which we were thrilled about. We have had a few close shaves as pedestrians. Another magnificent church and picturesque squares scattered with restaurants and cafes. Puccini, the composer was born here so music is very much a part of this town. We were fortunate to find a Leonardo da Vinci exhibition there showing some of the amazing machines he invented. The girls had a great time playing with them. After a beautiful lunch we headed back to the car for our short drive ... read more

Rain rain and more rain! It poured most the day at Venice! From the time we boarded the bus to catch the water taxi it rained. It did stop for a bit for a brief city tour and gondola ride but pretty much most of the day it rained! Venice even in the rain is an amazing place. From the gondolas, to the bridges, to the thousands of tourists to the guys selling fake Louis Vuitton, Gucci , and Fendi bags. You guessed it I had a bit of a haggle with some and bought a few!  Ahh I just love haggling! As I said we had a short city tour with a local guide. She had big glasses, big hair and strong Italian accent. We didn’t really like her. For one we couldn’t understand ... read more

An early morning - pack, breakfast, leave for Italy. At breakfast I make a sandwich (ham, cheese on a bread roll) for myself and slip it into my bag for later. The bus trip begins again! The first stop is the lion’s monument in Lucerne. It’s a dying lion carved into a stone wall. WOW! It is amazing to think one person carved it. Lugano Back on the bus we travel for a couple of hours to Lugano. Lugano is by the water at the border of Switzerland and Italy. There are paddle boats on the water, boats, and ducks. It is a small town almost like a village. We stroll through the farmer’s market where they sell fresh bread, fruit and vegetables, meat, and antiques. The stores there are designer boutiques like Louis Vuitton, Versace, ... read more

Venice is AMAZING! We stepped out of the train station and directly onto a wide promenade that followed the water’s edge! The weather was sunny and warm with a muggy breeze and a wide blue sky. People were eating gelato, lugging suitcases and buying Murano glass from the souvenir stalls. The kids and I were surprised that the ornately decorated buildings lining the water actually as beautiful and regal as they appear in travel brochures. We just kept saying “look” and “Can you believe we made it to Venice?” Gene found a bank while I bought vaporreto tickets. We were both quite proud of ourselves, but would discover the next morning that the 24 hour vaporetto tickets were worthless as the boat-bus drivers went on strike. We were amazed at how well the kids had all ... read more

Day 45: May 20 - Corfu, night ferry to Venice Accommodation: Adriatic ferry We had an early night the night before as we all knew we had to get up at (gasp) 4am this morning! Basically the ferry was leaving at 6am and Tash wanted us to be at the bus just before 5am to make sure we didn't miss the ferry back to Italy. It was going to be a very long trip all through the day and night so we had to get there on time or risk missing a whole day. Thanks to the laidback nature of workers in Greece, our ferry arrived closer to 7am than 6am, although we were told we were lucky as some groups in the past have had to wait until 8am or 9am! That would suck trying ... read more

I've got some time to kill before my train to Zurich leaves and I'm backing up photos which will take forever so I figured I'd add an entry to the blog. I haven't had time to really update with good photos and writing for awhile. Or at least it feels that way anyway. I left Naples yesterday morning and rode the train for 7 hours to reach Venice. I can't remember if I mentioned that Rodney Dangerfield's lost cousin and 11 of his family members were on the train. Apparently this family of 12 was traveling together and their reservations were messed up so they weren't all sitting together. They were told at some point that it was fixed but never got new tickets printed and apparently nothing was fixed. A whole group of people getting ... read more
