I'm not sure how, but I got 15 days off of work and I'm off to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. I'll do my best to make everyone jealous while they read this as work. I'll definitely miss home (and most of all Samantha) but cannot wait to get home and share the pictures and memories. Please write and enjoy the blog.

Well first I will apologize for the long delay in getting back to the States and posting my final post. First, I had to let the carpel tunnel from the blackberry wear off; second, I had to TRY to catch up on my work and school lives (which is easier said than done); and lastly... I really wanted to let the trip, the experience, and everything else I had the opportunity to see and do sink in so I could do them justice. And prepare yourselves here, this in direct contrast to my normal quirky posts with funny stories and crazy anecdotes. This one is all business, and that should tell you something... This was probably the best trip I have ever taken. I'm not sure any of the multitude of places I saw would be ... read more

We arrived in Jo-burg early on Wednesday hoping that things would go smoothly so we could get to Pretoria and the third game versus Algeria on time. For once... They did. We picked up our third Chevy Aveo of the trip (this one was silver and named the Silver Bullet unlike the White Bullet and the Blue Bullet, the names I gave the first two Aveos) and headed North to the capital. I will say while not having any power at all (it felt like a 600 cc dirtbike engine when you hit the gas) the Aveos treated us well and will be remembered. Having boycotted GPS altogether and frankly, from being exhausted from traveling non-stop for over 3 weeks - the trip to our hotel in Pretoria was an adventure. I have no clue how, ... read more

We flew to Cape Town early, picked up the car, and made our way to the hotel downtown. The whole driving on the other side of the car and road is a non-issue now, but its still weird every single time. We hit a lot of the downtown sights on Saturday. We walked Long St, a street of stores, antique shops, food vendors, and bars - it reminds me a lot of South Street in Philly for those of you who know it. We hit up Green Market Square which is an outdoor market that requires bartering. This will forever be the place where I bought my vuvu (zella) which I'm sure many of you will learn to hate. We also walked the V&A waterfront which is where the rich and elite of SA come to ... read more

Sorry for the short delay in posts, my BB was unable to send or receive emails for a few days. Well, we are nearly three weeks into the trip which is crazy. As with every trip, there are moments when you do start to get exhausted and miss your normal life in some way. This has already ranked up there as one of the best trips ever. Africa is more unique and far different than I couldve even imagined. You have seen and heard from me all of the little things that have been interesting and unique, and they continue to grow by the day. But on the same token, I am starting to feel the end of the trip and in some strange ways... I am ready for my own space, not living out of ... read more

We left Jo-burg early on Monday following an extremely early exit from Rustenburg. We made the trip without any flat tires and returned the car without issue with plenty of time to catch our flight. We caught our flight on 1time Airlines to Livingstone, Zambia and met some good people along the way. First off, I know what you're thinking. Yes, I am serious that the airline was called 1time Airlines. Secondly, the flight was awesome. Third, although I wasn't looking, as with many of low budget airlines I have flown in the past, the flight attendants look like they are models (and they were named Nikita, Kristi, and Natasha - I literally felt like I was in a movie. Finally, the service - including the best in-flight airline magazine I have ever seen (eat your ... read more

First thing in the morning we headed to the airport to pick up our car around 830 AM. Little did we know we wouldn't be leaving the airport until nearly 11 AM. Friday was the opening day of the World Cup so the airport was PACKED with cheers and vuvuzellas (the horns you hear on TV) everywhere. We ran some errands, buying a converter and a road map because we don't trust GPS. We attempted to deal with the issues with my phone, but that was an epic fail. I went to two phone companies and waited for a total of 2 hours. Both of the piece of crap companies told me I would need their service and that my phone was locked and wouldn't work in SA. I tried to explain that it had been ... read more

Well I think I have officially developed carpel tunnel syndrome from typing these entries with such speed. Also, I want to complain about a few 'corporate issues' that we have been having. First, Verizon wireless sucks in SA. It has service like 5% of the time, except when being hundreds of miles from the nearest town - then the service is perfect. Sure - that makes total sense. Second, Bank of America is really being annoying - Heathers debit and credit cards are both not working. This caused Heather to experience what can only be described as a breakdown. It. Was. Awkward. But understandable. So until tomorrow, I will be funding her trip on a temporary basis. And yes, I will be charging interest. On to the matters at hand. We awoke at 530 AM for ... read more

The fourth day of our safari and its definitely everything I expected and more. I mean... I'm not even phased by seeing zebras and giraffes anymore because I have already seen so many. Its a really sad thing to think about - but its true. Today's plan was to visit the Rehab center and do another bush drive in the afternoon. The rehab center serves two purposes: to treat injured animals and to educate the public. Let me be clear, the point was made abundantly clear to us that it is not conservation. They save single animals, not entire species. But through those animals and education, they try to save species and promote awareness. Whether its with the locals (and telling them not to kill the animals) or through tourists (by raising awareness). The fact highlighted ... read more

We got to sleep in a bit, but we again up at 7 AM. Seriously though, I cannot wait to sleep like 10 hours. But anyways... Today was the day-long trip into Kruger National Park. I keep referencing Kruger in my other posts, but while we are in Greater Kruger, the official park is like 30 km away. Kruger is about 4.5 million acres, the size of Israel. Its owned by the country of SA and has some of the nicest infrastructure in the nation. Its definitely the pride of the country. Its employees 4000 employees that live in their own town in the park. It would take 4 hours to drive west to east and days to drive north to south. Including our reserve and the others that are considered 'Greater Kruger' - its millions ... read more

Just to put it in perspective how incredible this place is, while I was typing this blog from the patio of our lodge, I had to take a break because I saw a giraffe walk by the deck I was sitting on (10 feet from me), and had to run to get some pictures. Now back to the details of the day... We were up for coffee and out into the bush by 545 for our morning 4-hour walk. Seriously? I thought this was vacation. We are not following the rules as it relates to staying away from certain foods or drinks. Everyone here does it, and they all seem healthy. Its all part of the experience and the reason Cipro was invented. I have religiously been taking my meds relating to the disease that matters ... read more
