So our night in lovely Tuscany ended and we took breakfast on the garden, what a view!!! Heading off we made our way east to San Marino through hills, mountains, the worst roads in Italy and glorious scenery. San Marino was not what we expected. It's basically a huge hill surrounded by flat plains with amazing views both up the hill and out to the sea. Ash had his picture taken outside the football stadium, we both had a quick ice cream in the McDonalds with the best view ever, a windy drive down the hill and we were on our way to bologna. Italian driving is no better on the east. Italians idea of lane discipline is to constantly be between two, never use the inside lane even if you're traveling at twenty and preferably ... read more

Woolly says – I awoke to rain, having prodded Jo and told her to sort it out it appears that it’s not something she has any control over.....I need better staff! At least I had breakfast to look forward to and as we took the lift down to the breakfast room I knew that I needed to fill up well for another round of walking. It was chaos, every table was full, dishes were being banged and clattered around and feeling there was nothing for it I left Jo and Zoe waiting and went to tuck in to the buffet. Twenty minutes later I found him stood in the cornflakes licking the croissants! Having removed him and tried to reduce the amount of stickiness we checked both of our maps and set off. Woolly says – ... read more

We spent a couple days in the city of canals of Venice, Italy. We lucked out to have great weather while there, but during the overnight hours each night there were good amount of thunderstorms with heavy rain. We stayed in a small 3 bed cabin. It was nice just walking around the city and not worrying about cars or bikes. We can now cross off our bucket list having real fresh authentic Italian pasta in Italy :). We decided when leaving for the airport at the end of our journey here to walk around 1.5 hours so we could each save 8 euros.... read more

Woolly says- I stood staring at the canal water as it lapped rather too closely to my paws, glancing towards Zoe it appeared that she was a. Still breathing b. Not doubled up in pain and c. Not requiring an ambulance, it seemed that our second attempt at seeing Venice was really going to happen. Our first try over three years ago had resulted in a very long drive back to the UK after Zoe had been removed from the campsite in the early hours by ambulance, and a missed opportunity, I had only blamed her for a few months for my disappointment! We hadn’t been sure how or when we would return but it had always been on the list of things to achieve, armed with two maps, our cameras and a mammoth we set ... read more

Not sure if you can call today a rest day, this morning we took a boat to Murano Island to see the glassmakers at work. What artist these people are. The glass works is beautiful and to think all these items are handmade. After a wonderful couple of hour at Murano we then get a boat to the island of Burano where the art of lace making is undertaken. Unfortunately, we found ourselves in a shop with the pushiest sales person we have every come across, was a very unnerving feeling. Need a large glass of Aperol Splitzer after this, thank goodness the restaurant down the road and the view of the wonderful coloured homes could help with this. Burano is a lovely colourful outer island of Venice with small almost comically house painted in striking ... read more

Oh what a fantastic day. This will rate as one of the best days, we started the day watching the production of 11 wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano at the artisan family cheese factory of San Pier Damian (DOC registration 3333) what a wonderful 2 hours watching the cheese maker pull the cheese out of the copper cauldrons, seeing the salting process, visiting the aging storage room and learning how the experts examine, grade the cheese and mark them with the fire brands. After all this we then tasted 18, 22 and 40 month old Parmigiano Reggiano (We are in heaven all those wheels of cheese and we only want to eat 40 months cheese now). You would not think the day could get any better well 2 hours later we have arrived in Venice. What an ... read more

Serenissima – the old lady of the sea Venice . She is beautiful. She sits in her lagoon check by jowl with the industry that both sucks the life out of her and gives her her lifeblood. Marghera her port and industrial side. Tourists make Venice what it is. Both a pleasure and a delight but the bane of her life. She needs tourists like a man needs water but there is a point when enough becomes enough and she is spoilt by her success. We decided to stay at Serenissma Camping site. One we have stayed at before. It seemed Ok last time and this time at first seemed OK. Our peace was shattered though as the dog next door started up barking and never stopped all night. What made it worse was the fact ... read more

This morning we woke up early and took a boat to Murano which is one of the islands in Venice. It was pouring with rain so I bought a lovely bright blue poncho on the way which worked really well, but may have not been the classiest thing to wear in Italy! Murano is famous for it's glass artwork. We saw a demonstration of how they made their glass by either blowing into it to make the vases or moulding the hot glass to make different sculptures. Their glass work is amazing and you have to be very skilled to do that type of work. We bought our first piece of artwork on Murano which is a little elegant twisted glass sculpture. We looked at a few others as well, our favourite piece was a beautiful ... read more

This morning our room flooded in Venice! Not because of a high tide though, our shower didn't drain properly and it was so bad that it started to enter our bedroom. The hotel staff were really good though and they fixed it and cleaned it all up while we had our breakfast. It was raining this morning and there is already a huge difference in the water level in the canals compared to yesterday. So in the rain we headed out to the bell tower in St Mark's square. We'd planned to walk up but the only option was to take the lift. We got to the top and had a great view of Venice, all the roofs have orange tops and the beautiful cathedrals stood out everywhere. The bells then started to go off while ... read more

We had a big day today exploring Venice! This morning we had our buffet breakfast at our hotel (which we took advantage of!) and then started a walking tour around Venice. Our guide took us around all the parts of Venice that we probably wouldn't have got to see or know the significance of if we'd done it by ourselves. We went over the famous Rialto Bridge, walked through the local market place and visited many courtyards. We learnt that if a street name contained Rio, it used to be a canal and that Venician is a different language from Italian and when they tried to change the names to Italian spelling, the locals crossed out the extra letters to change it back. There are many pictures and sculptures of lions on the buildings around Venice ... read more
