Our stop in Venice was nice however getting on the boat was very welcomed. After lugging our bags up and down stairs and all over the cobble stoned city sidewalks, we were very happy to hand them off to the cruise staff! We really enjoyed our first evening of walking the quiet evening streets and stumbling across an amazing restaurant with delicious and fresh seafood! Our Venetian style hotel was in a quieter part of town, which was a wonderful break from the crowded city streets. After checking out of our hotel the next morning, we enjoyed strolling around adoring the beautiful architecture and the Grand Canal. Amazing to think that this city was built so long ago and still exists with no wheeled vehicles of any kind! Everything and everyone is transported by boat or ... read more

Buon giorno!

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384Buongiorno, all!We had a full day yesterday, Wed May 3, so taking a little time to say 'ciao' on Thursday morning. After the full day of travel Monday-to-Tuesday and trying to get our legs and bearings Tuesday evening, we finally settled into a nice flow on Wednesday.Venice is a fascinating maze of canals and alleys, but we've figured out the vaporetto (water bus) system on the Grand Canal, so it's now easy to get around. Our hotel is right in the Rialto Market neighborhood, so we're close to everything. It also stays bustling, lively, and noisy well into the night, so sleeping with windows open does not work here. And with the produce market right below our 2nd floor (called the first floor in Europe) window, and the fish market right around the corner, the ... read more

I thing Venice Carnevale is really top 2 of my favorite things I've done on this trip - basically this and my Cambodia photography tour are running neck in neck for 1st! This was reason I extended my trip first time and I'm so glad I did. It's amazing. Seriously the most visuall stimulating and everyone is so happy!! A lot of the people who are dressed up dressed up are tourists or locals! Not professionals!! and they all stop to pose for you or with you. its been also some great weather. Don't get me wrong it was cooler last night but today it is so nice out. You almost don't need any jacket at times. I loved Prague too ( before Venice, after Budapest). I should have listened to my friend Andreas (some of ... read more

Saturday was my flat warming, I had a couple of friends over to celebrate the Venetian festival. Legend has it that the first carnival was in 1162, when people began to gather at San Marco Square to dance in celebration of the Venetian Republic (Serenissima Repubblica - the Serene Republic). In the 1600s it became the baroque carnival and appears to be more or less the same today (with extra bits added in). There weren't many celebrations in the early 20th century, but since 1979 the Italian government started an annual event of Venetian history and culture. Some 3 million people visit the city for the carnival and there is a prize for la maschera piu bella (the most beautiful mask). Masks have a strange position in Venetian culture and history. People would wear them between ... read more

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384Today we left Innsbruck for Venice. Leaving Innsbruck though was quite the spectacle. Leaving the snow capped mountains was a surreal experience. On the road out of Innsbruck, the snow capped mountains were everywhere we turned. Whilst it was raining for most part on the way out, it snowed at one stage and our bus drove through the snow. It was simply amazing to see the white stuff on the road, in the mountains, in trees and even on the windscreen of the bus.A few hours drive and we were in Venice. What I saw in movies about Venice and its canals, I was now seeing in real life. The architecture as well of all the buildings of Venice was magnificent. Unique but beautiful. We took the water taxis - the world's most expensive taxis ... read more

Danach bin ich immerhin ... read more
