We are up early and on a mission to spend an entire day in Venice. We decided that once we park we will find a little cafe, have a pastry and coffee, while pouring over the little tourist map we have. It's so big that we know we have to select a route and then navigate the area. This time we park in the all day garage and when we receive our ticket, the attendant tells us to go to the 9th floor and take our directions from the attendant on that floor. We proceed to the ninth, and when we get there we are told where to park, and to leave our keys in the car and the car unlocked, Anthony expresses concern, and the attendant says that if he has to move the car (we ... read more

We have looked forward to today’s outing ever since we started planning our trip nearly two years ago. We get down to the breakfast room reasonably early to beat the two tour groups staying overnight. We need not have worried. They were early risers, much earlier than us. We leave for the bus stop equipped with pre-purchased tickets and a plan. Arriving at the bus stop we find our first miscalculation for the day. We missed one bus by 5 minutes, the next one is 20 minutes away. We entertain ourselves wondering what the men are doing in the yard of the bus depot. They are measuring, marking and making chalk lines everywhere. We decide they need an all weather pitch for their lunch time football games and are marking it out. The bus arrives and ... read more

Last day in Venice before we board our cruise ship...Went by so fast. Heather and Suzy got up early and heading to 'climb' the bell tower at St. Mark's Plaza. Kelly and I got going exploring another section of Venice. Kelly and I managed to get semi lost and it was a relaxing morning. And apparently there is an elevator in the bell tower so they didn't have to climb. Lazy lazy kids. Lol... Suzy and I did the most typical/cliche tourist thing possible. Yup you guessed it... A Gondola boat ride. It was actually relaxing and informative. The man was very nice and answered our question. Was it expensive? Yes but we didn't care. The 4 of us then go for a short walk to find some food. We found a little cafe and had ... read more

What little rain that fell last night didn’t seem to lower the humidity levels and the day’s temperature looks like it will be another 30+ degrees. We start the day with a good breakfast and leave the hotel for the short walk to the bus stop. On the way we need to buy tickets from the tabacchi. Easy. No. The tabacchi man says buy them from the driver. We join other people waiting for the bus. It is a tight squeeze but we all gather under the shade of a nearby apricot tree. The bus arrives and we attempt to buy tickets. The driver does not have any. A fellow driver waiting for his bus has some so the deal is done. Two euros each, a bit more than we expected. No one speaks or understands ... read more

Hi it's me...Amy.... The time has come for us to say good bye to Venice and hello to the Celebrity Constellation. Our home away from home for the next 9 nights. After we sign in and go through immigration and security, we board our ship. We were assigned the 2:00/2:30 boarding time and it worked our great. We went and sat and enjoyed a nice breeze and surfed the web. The to the casino for our safety briefing. Then up to top deck for the sail away from Venice. I had been told the sail away from Venice was amazing and it was. Then to find our rooms. And YEA!!! our bags all showed up on time. Unpack and then upstairs for dinner. Mmm mmm good food. Venice....Wow... Boat transfer to our hotel which is right on the Grand Canal. Rooms weren't ready so we left our bags and walked around and got out first Gelato!!! And Spaghetti Bolognese. Mmm mmm good. Small surprise...The cover charge to sit and eat at some places. Oh well we are getting use to it. Back to hotel and rooms are ready at 2:00. We've now been up since 6:00am Louisville time (26 hours). Shower time and a power nap. My goal in Venice is to eat Gelato, get loss, and drink wine. 2 of 3 accomplished. We were too tired for wine. We walked and walked and walked. Absolutely breathtaking. The canals. The boats. The language. The Gelato ?. Someone asked 'Where are all the cars'? Dogs in Venice.... Quote of the day.... 'I just realized ... read more

This past weekend was our first free weekend to travel. A few friends and I decided to go to Venice! Friday: Friday morning we woke up very early to catch our train that left at 7:50 am. The train stations are very relaxed. No one checked my bags or looked at my ticket until I boarded the train. During the 3 hour train ride, I was surrounded by Italians that did not speak any English. I got to sleep a little though, but still saw a lot of the countryside. Once we arrived in Venice, we got our 3-Day Passes to take the buses, trams, and the vaporetto (water bus). Once we had our passes, we took the bus to the AirBNB that we stayed at this weekend located just outside of Venice. We all were ... read more

I spent the day in Venice and it was nice to be back. I took the train to get there. That is why I chose the hotel in Padua: for its proximity to both the tram (for seeing Padua) and to the train (for seeing Venice). I felt a comfortable sense of the familiar on arrival in Venice because Maggie and I have been there before. I got a day pass for the vaporetto (the boat equivalent of a bus in this city with no streets and no cars). First of all I rode down the entire length of the Grand Canal, listening to Rick Steves's commentary as I went. The canal is lined with old palazzos and gondolas ply the water (see photo). When I got to Piazza San Marco, it was a pleasure to ... read more

Hi, I hope all my friends and family have found my new blog site, I am sorry about the change but unfortunately I had notification that the site I was using would be closing before we made it home next month. Hopefully I can work out how this site works and will be able to still post on Facebook, going to soon find out! Left Rome via train for Venice, easy trip, I wrote my Rome blog the whole way so managed to avoid freeking out over all the tunnels we went through. Arrived at Venice Mestre station to find there were steps to go down with our 3 suitcases and two backpacks And Andrea and Garry with their two large suitcases and small backpacks. Just debating the best way to achieve downstairs when three guys ... read more
