Two last days in Verona and the plan was go to go up to Bolzano for Sunday. I’d heard about the Ice Man Museum and we had to go. I’d read about the Ice Man when he was found and read everything I could but nothing is like seeing him, his clothing and artifacts for ourselves. We were going to get the bus, go to the train station and take the train from Verona to Bolzano. As we walked to the bus stop, we found that there was a marathon taking place and we had to dodge runners. The street to the bus stop was blocked off to vehicle traffic. We walked to the next bus stop and found that it was closed as well, then found that the next stop, at the Verona Arena was ... read more

Today I am off to visit Bolzano with Sue as this is one of the places that I shall be bringing groups to next summer. I have briefly been once before but it was back in 2010 and I only have hazy memories. It is really nice to be doing this excursion with a good friend. And we are doing it by car and not by train! We have an early start as we want to miss the traffic both ways - it is a Friday and there will be lots of people crossing this part of Austria and Italy. Somehow it doesn’t feel the same as the M6 on a Bank Holiday Monday though! We make our way first over the Europa Brücke (bridge) and then over the Brenner Pass. The Europa Briücke is located ... read more

We once had an exchange student for a brief weekend visit and he was from Bolzano. He said it was a beautiful city in the Italian Alps that not many people outside Italy know about. It is Tyrolean in character and totally bilingual-German and Italian. It is in the area that was ceded to Italy from Austria after WW I, then treated very badly during Mussolini’s rule. After WW II Italy tried to heal the wounds and unite this area, but it is very independent and would like to secede. In the morning we took a cable car up the mountain to Sopranolzano/OberBolzen. It is hard to describe the exquisite beauty of the day we had. The fog lifted from the mountaintops revealing clear views of the craggy Dolomites. The meadows under the cable car were ... read more

Today I did a lot of driving, mostly northward on from Ravenna to Bolzano, Italy. Bolzano is located at the foot of the Italian Alps and historically has been a good place to "rest up" before tackling the Brenner Pass to Innsbruck (in Austria) and Munich (in Germany). After driving across the flat land of central northern Italy, I was greeted by the foot hills of the Alps rising up to meet me (see photo). I arrived in Bolzano and checked into the hotel. Then I took a little walk around the town center. From the main square you can see a "hill" on the right side (see photo), and I know that the snow-capped peaks are just behind it. Bolzano is located in an area known as the Tyrol. It is a German-speaking area that ... read more

Day 5 Saturday July 13. Admin day/ Checkout and across to the station for our trip to Bolzano. All went well although we did lose wifi at ¾ time of the Port Hawthorn game and the game was still in the balance …… As you would imagine, qwe left with plenty of time and were the first in our coach on the train. Just as well as the luggage capacity was minuscule although we did eventually find room for our two largest bags. The rest went into the overhead. The train was packed with cases lying everywhere. Fast and comfortable although there wasn’t much leg room. Countryside was interesting and we got into farming land more quickly than we thought. Passed through Florence and Verona and a few other stops. It was interesting to note the ... read more

It’s 7 AM and I rollover and Kirsten is starring at me; WOOO; I jump, are you awake, I am now. It’s still raining and Bea is coming out of the bathroom ready to go. Let’s get going the day is wasting, we’re all cleaned and dressed within 30 mins and heading down for breakfast. We sit at our assigned table and we have a nice breakfast. We load up our suit cases and were off before 9 AM. Hey I thought we are on vacation, Ok, Ok, I’ll take it easier tomorrow, however today were making up time. I guess Kirsten slept real good, she’s sitting in the car tooting the horn as I’m running across the parking lot. As were leaving Borimo, lots of cyclists are coming up the road heading toward the pass ... read more

Friday, July 01, 2011 I am beginning to forget what day of the week is it. Mostly I’ve been counting the days in terms of how long my stay in a particular town is. Today is day three of my Bolzano stay. ”Dov’e una bus per Siusi?” This morning I skipped out on the simple breakfast offered by the hostel and set out to get on the bus for Siusi (See-oo-see) to catch the lift to the big and popular alpine meadow. I got to a bus stop in time, it was just not the right one. Bolzano has several major bus stops, and my miscalculation ended up costing me an hour wait for the next bus. Fortunately, it took me less than an hour to find the correct bus terminal. The Road to Hana… Oops, ... read more

Thursday, June 30, 2011 Uninvited Alarm Clock It was a little difficult to get situated for sleep. I left the window open so some air could circulate in the room. Unfortunately, my room overlooks the train station, and train whistles and the station flood lights infiltrated my otherwise quiet space. I had packed my eye mask, used primarily on airplanes, and it worked magic. Combined with soft music from my iPod, my senses were dulled to the point that sleep was almost immediate. I awoke just before my alarm to a loud whistle blast. It was morning, and the trains were up and running. I cursed that they didn’t come with a snooze button. It was pointless to lounge any longer, so I began to prepare for the day. Complications with the Plumbing The shower was ... read more

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 Good Bye, Good Riddance I got up and moving early, in hopes of catching the 7am bus to the train station. At the check out counter, however, I realized I would be just too late. I asked the staff to call me a cab, not wanting to wait another full hour for the next bus. The taxi was worth the €10, since we passed two number 90 busses on the way to the station. And I arrived in plenty of time to find where my train would be and have a small breakfast. Wait, Now Hurry My booklet said no reservation were needed to go to Verona, where I would connect to another train to Bolzano Bozen. Fifteen minutes before I was to board, I looked at the giant schedule posted in ... read more

When we woke up the next morning in Bolzano, the sky was drizzling its last few sprinkles of the day. We went downstairs for a super-delicious breakfast buffet… lots of strudel and an amazing fresh fruit bar. By the time breakfast was over, the rain had stopped and the clouds were being burned off by the sun. We took a long leisurely walk through the town and past the Italian Arch that is often defaced by Austrians who want Bolzano back for themselves. We also walked through a small open air market. This little town square was definitely some sort of holdout of all things Italian. People only spoke Italian and they only sold Italian products: Tuscan cheeses and sausages, Sicilian olives, Italian pastries. There was not a strudel to be found in this little spot. ... read more
