I'm looking for George ...I know he's here somewhere! We are at Stresa, Lago Maggiore, the second largest lake in Italy and right near Lake Como, just a few hours drive from Switzerland. If I lost a little of my heart in Switzerland, Michael has lost all of his heart right here! From the moment we arrived he didn't stop smiling, he belongs in Italia! We dropped our bags in our hotel room and immediately went for a swim at the rooftop pool and bar. The first photo shows him happily in the pool waiting for his drink. It is glorious! We were blessed with perfect weather, blue skies and blue water and a backdrop of snow capped mountains, which made for a very happy old boy! Our drive from Switzerland to here was very scenic, ... read more

Friends of Steve’s were flying to Malpensa airport to meet us for a few days so, with the help of some recommendations from others, we found a campsite on the shores of Lago Maggiore, with a bus link to Milan. The campsite, situated in a little town called Baveno, near Stresa, was small and quiet (during the day! Unfortunately we quickly realised that there was a club nearby that played its music a few nights a week until around 3am!) and was within walking distance of a little ferry port that ran a ferry boat service to some nearby islands and towns. We met Steve’s friends: Tammi and Matt, in Stresa where their airport bus dropped them, using the ferry to take us to Stresa and back. This area of Lake Maggiore enjoyed its heyday in ... read more

What a day - we were headed for Intra, about 4 towns away in Verbania, for a local sim card because although the internet told me that there was a Vodaphone store at Malpensa/Milan airport, there seemed not to be, or perhaps it was in the Arrivals section. Unfortunately we got off the bus too early, so we tried the local tobacci shop (where you buy bus tickets, and phone recharges) but alas no micro sims for an iPhone! They sent us up the hill to the information centre, where we found a very nice Italian lady with good English who said, no, you could buy that at Stresa (where we had come from). So we said, can you give us there number and we will call and check first, so we don't go back then ... read more

Wed/Thursday – the start of 3 nights at Lake Maggiore Thanks for all your comments, we enjoyed reading them finally. After nearly missing out flight to Milan, even though we were at the airport 2 & ¾ hours before the flight time, somehow we were sitting one gate next to the one written on our boarding pass, and didn’t realise that the boarding gate had also been changed down one number, and we were lined up to board a flight to Hamburg at 9.05 which was the time our flight was due to leave. Lucky for us our boarding passes didn’t make the right noise and we could make a dash to the right gate where the flight was running a little late and there were still 2 people lined up to board! Just in ... read more

Leaving late, around 2.30 as Pam was trying to catch up on work we headed off towards lake Maggiore, again via the back roads, the roads around the lakes are very very narrow with many places where two cars cant pass and it is a matter of getting through when you can. Winding down lake Como we were looking for a road over the mountains, through Switzerland then over to Lake Maggiore. Getting through Lugano was a nightmare at 5.00 but we finally got some clear road towards Luino, we passed the Swiss border where we were stopped and sent onto a weighbridge. This little Swiss/Italian man then proceeded to ask us if we wanted a 3 way on the autobahn, Pam and I cracked up, we had no idea what this border guard wanted, we ... read more

Friday 5th. Cold with snow in the campsite, probably a lot of snow at high level so we kept the heating warm and stayed in the van reading most of the day, with a break to take a stroll into the village. Saturday was still pretty poor weather wise, so it was togged up for a walk in the local woods followed by an afternoon watching the start of the Six Nations rugby. Sunday7th. Was a much better day so we headed for the Funicular railway Which goes from Bourg St. Maurice to Les Arcs 1600. Then on a free bus to Les Arcs 1950m Which has a very pretty village, real picture postcard alpine resort with bars, restaurants etc. .. and amazing views. We then took a cabriolet lift to Les Arcs 2000 and finally ... read more

So, today started as any other typical jet lagged day. I woke up at 3 pm my time after a night of incurable insomnia. I vaguely remember the scuffling of feet over the hard wood floors of our hotel room too early to open my eyes- i knew it was my dad going off to his interview with Agusta. Not long afterward there was the same scufling of feet and I dont remember much after that. Far too tired to be interested.Turns out my dad got the job!!!! (Of course). Some deal too. Come all the way to Italy for an interview that lasted all of 20 minutes. Hes so excited and we are so excited for him. Back to waking up at 3 pm. Groggy. Tired. Head, back, everything aching from too much...or maybe not ... read more

Back In January we went on our first trip to Italy and our first trip out since we returned to the UK in November! We did say that it wouldn't take us long to book a flight to somewhere.......this time to Milan to see our good friend Mar with Liz and Rory as company! Before we knew it here we were on a cheap Ryanair flight, once arriving in Bergamo airport we picked up our hire car and set up Liz's sat nav to take us to Mars home on Lake Maggiore. We arrived in the dark to cobbled streets crisp winter air and Mar's lovely appartment which a hot drink was greatlfully received! Unfortunately Mar had to work so it was the four of us........ A late night and early morning wake up call due ... read more

Watching the news, it is evident that an imminent cold front is approaching from northern Europe and bringing rain with it. team orson is forced to make an executive decision and drop down south to a defensive line along the Ligurian coast. The next morning still has blue skies, so we make time for a quick dash eastward via Varese, skirting Lake Varese to the Lake Maggiore ferry crossing at Laveno. Regarding the Lake District as a motorcycling destination, in all honesty, the roads aren’t conducive to sport riding. The roads are very twisty with lots of traffic and few places to pass, even for a motorcycle. There are few roads inland from the lakes, as the mountain terrain is so steep. ... read more
