as is usual the day following an exciting one is often a complete juxtaposition. yesterday was no exception. it was rainy, groggy, and uninspiring. we made food and watched tv. by the end of the day it was just David and i left in the lake house until tuesday or wednesday. but today, although quite overcast and drizzly, i decided to get a ferry ticket and tour the islands on the lake. and they are incredible. isola madre is a huge estate. all of these islands are owned by or have been home to the boromeo family, they're royalty and open the villas and islands to the public to see the gardens and such. so i began on isola madre...you have to walk around the perimeter of the island through manicured gardens and waterfront. the ... read more

this morning we left milano for lago maggiore; Sara, me, David, Barbara, and Jeff Robinson (childhood friend of David's). the brief but winding ride through metropolitan highways to winding thin avenues was just what i imagined but more colorful, vivid, and authentically more italian than i could conjure. David's lake house is magnificent, no less than could be expected. his good fortune is really making the first leg of my trip more extravagant than i could have planned, or afforded. ultimately it was my hammock experience that wooed me. laying suspended in his private ivy covered gazebo was unreal. the sun cascading around the gazebo illuminated the peonies and coaxed their intoxicating perfume in and around the garden. the hammock suspended my body in a zero-gravity like position and i closed my eyes and felt ... read more

Wknd #3:The Northern Italian Lakes. Lake Maggiore... "makes even your mind smile" I sat in the OR today, watching a craniotomy and removal of a GBM from the right parietal region, and I kept day-dreaming on how I would begin this blog. In truth, it was ineffably beautiful... but I'll try... I spent the morning in the OR and by 15:30 I was on the train to Laveno. This is the local train, btw, and packed as hell with annoying children, people with golden teeth, fanny packs, and krimped hair... just to name a few of the highlights I saw . People LOVVVVE to unabashedly stare, too. It's AWEsome. Anyway, I arrived in Laveno and immediately boarded the ferry to Intra, where I was spending the night at a quaint little B&B I found.
