Our 3 week Italy trip actually started with a Toronto-Zurich overnight AC flight. From the airport we took the train to Chur, a small town about 1 1/2 outside of Zurich, for an over night stay and to catch the Bernina Express the next day. This 4 hour rail passage through the Swiss Alps was an excellent way to shake off the jet lag and enjoy some striking scenery on the way to northern Italy. We rented an apartment in the small town of Varenna for the 3 days we were in Lake Como area. Varenna is one several small cobblestoned towns along the shores of the lake that are connected with frequent ferry service. Lake Como is one of Italy’s largest fresh water lake (Lake Garda is the largest). It sits at the base of ... read more

Day 23 : Saturday 28 September 2019 : Air show and Bellagio steal the show Interesting, it seems there’s an air show on. Supposed to start at 10am, we weren’t sure if we’d be able to see it. We watched for a little while and saw a bit and decided to head down. Graham is super excited, I was more disappointed that the ferries weren’t running. But it turned out to be very good. There were people everywhere, the place was packed. Pretty amazing, especially the fighter jets flying in formation. Quite easy to see with the mountains in the background and flying above the lake. Its still a little misty though. The air show is likely to be the highlight of Graham’s trip. Something that we could never have anticipated. After that when the ferries ... read more

Friday 27 September 2019 : Santa Margherita to Varenna, Lake Como Today we head north to Varenna, Lake Como. Decide that its too far to lug our bags with all those hills if we’re getting on a train, so a taxi €25 for a 5-10min ride. Those wonderful fast trains ($118AUD prebooked), except that today, our train was late. So when we got to Milan for our connection, we needed to sort out another train. No biggy as it turns out, an hour to sit on the kerb and eat our packed lunch, toilets, drinks and off we go again. The last part of the journey has beautiful scenery, we’re getting very excited. The trains are so comfortable, we were concerned with the distances, but its not a problem. We were met at the train station ... read more

Boungiorno, This is our last full day in Italy, this time has flown by but we have really enjoyed spending our anniversary here but time to take advantage of our last 24 hours in this amazing place, we're headed up to Lake Como. That's where the residents of Milan go when they want to get away from the fast paced life of the city and go somewhere to unwind. Milan to Lake Como is about 84 kms which is about 50 miles or about to distance to drive from Sugar Land to the Woodlands in Houston, ok that drive in Houston might not be that far but it's close. Lake Como has been a popular getaway for Italians for hundreds of years, now many people throughout Europe and all over the world come here to unwind, ... read more

We are staying in Lugano, Switzerland but we are very close to the Italian border. We decided to drive to Lake Como. The first town we come to is Menaggio. We stop here and walk through the town. I buy a Christmas ornament, a globe with pictures of Lake Como. It is a cute town with a promenade along the lake. We then head to Villa Del Balbianello, this villa has been used as a movie set for many movies including Star Wars and the Bond film Casino Royale. Darn the villa is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. We decide to visit another villa in Tremezzi called Villa Carlotta. This is a beautiful villa overlooking the lake and has large gardens. We spend hours here checking out the villa and beautiful gardens. In 1843 Princess Marianne ... read more

Today adventure is an afternoon boating on Lake Como. 34 degrees today so we have hired a boat for 4 hours and having a picnic lunch on Lake Como. We rent a boat from Varenna then boated down to Lierna across to Vassena up to Bellagio down to Lezzeno across to Isola Comanacina up to Santa Abbondio across to Bellano then back to Varenna. What an amazing place with the mountains as a backdrop and the outstanding lakeside Villa’s like Villa Balbianello, as seen in Casino Royale. On the way to Lierna we came across George Clooney’s Riva with the driver waiting to pick him up. Just so peaceful not sure what it would be like on a weekend but was great today. Must say a boat is the only way to see this area and ... read more

We were up early this morning so that we could catch the 8.23am train to Varenna which is approximately half way up the eastern side of Lake Como. This regional service departs from Milano's Central Station so we had to take a Metro train from our B&B early enough to make the connection. Although we arrived at Milano Centrale yesterday and caught the Metro to the B&B to familiarise ourself with how to get about on the trains we still thought it best to allow plenty of time to get confused (or lost?) doing it in reverse. Our early start also meant that we missed the 'and breakfast' part at the B&B this morning. They do breakfast from 8.00am, but Bernie wanted to leave by 7.30am so we ate the fruit, etc that we bought at ... read more

13. Travel Blog Thursday 4th September to Tuesday 9th September 2014. Italy Thursday 4th September 2014. At the service station just outside Chiasso, Tom tries to install the LED lights that we had purchased at Hymer – no way. Only got one to work and decided he needed more cable joiners. Off to Lake Como. It is situated between the Alps and the Po Valley, close to the Swiss border. The lake is 46km long and varies from 4.3km and .43km in width. It covers an area of 146sq km and max dept of 410 metres. We go to campsite north of Lecco, Camping Abbadia Lariana. We go through a 6.6km tunnel – the longest one so far. They are booked out from Friday, because of the Formula One at Monzo, so we only stay one ... read more

We rose early to go by taxi to La Cattdrale di San Giovanni Battista (Chuch of Saint John the Baptist) in Turin to see the Chapel of the Holy Shroud. We were amongst the first to enter this peaceful place. The shroud is encased in a special box to protect it. Once a year it is taken out during a special worship service, so we saw images of this special burial cloth. Tears came to my eyes as I prayed & contemplated on Jesus death on the cross. The love He has for us! Then we joined up with the rest of our group for a boat ride on Lake Como. The beauty of the Italian Alps create the perfect backdrop to the villas dotting the lake. No wonder so many celebrities want to live here! ... read more
