Lunch with a view Friday 27 September 2019 : Santa Margherita to Varenna, Lake Como Today we head north to Varenna, Lake Como. Decide that its too far to lug our bags with all those hills if we’re getting on a train, so a taxi €25 for a 5-10min ride. Those wonderful fast trains ($118AUD prebooked), except that today, our train was late. So when we got to Milan for our connection, we needed to sort out another train. No biggy as it turns out, an hour to sit on the kerb and eat our packed lunch, toilets, drinks and off we go again. The last part of the journey has beautiful scenery, we’re getting very excited. The trains are so comfortable, we were concerned with the distances, but its not a problem.
We were met at the train station by the Airbnb host’s husband that couldn’t speak English, who drove us to the Airbnb. How worrying, it took 10 minutes by car hair bend by hair bend, up and up. I can’t see how we’re going to be able to walk up and down this into town. I have a terrible feeling. The property is gorgeous, the top floor of a 2
storey converted house in an olive grove overseeing the town and lake. We managed to communicate enough to determine that the gate next to the house was the path that led right into town – 5minutes beautiful walk. How awesome, this has to be the best AirBNB yet. Beat this, the laundry also has a supply cupboard that has a selection of wines, juice, water and anything heavy so that we didn’t have to carry it up the hill. Just an honour box. This is definitely the best place yet!! Lots of space and it feels like we’re back in nature as well.
Up next, a walk into town to explore. Oh, the walk is lovely. Steep, will be interesting coming back up. Town is beautiful. Small. Coloured. Not a lot of food options. Restaurants mainly. Not much in the way of supermarkets, but there’s a little store. It’s enough. Not sure how because its tiny, but it works. So a fancy lunch for us at a waterfront restaurant, Nilus (€39), exploring and back to the room for a rest. Quite a hike uphill, buts it’s not long, 10minutes. Long enough to get hot though. The owner came to
say hi and answer any queries, there’s an air show on tomorrow. She was left this place by her Grandmother, but lives at the bottom of the hill. The bottom floor is tenanted by a young guy that comes over for 6 months a year.
We headed out our side gate and up the hill to the Castelle di Vezio. We just wanted to see the view and the sunset, heard the ruins weren’t that great. We left it a little late, as it closes at 6pm anyway, so we continued on up and around and to the Sorgente del Fiumelatte. A waterfall of sorts that was completely dry. We then walked all the way back into town and then another restaurant for Dinner, Bar Ik Molo (€47), followed by gelato.
Need lights to get back up the hill. What a beautiful place. No wonder Lake Como rates so highly on people’s list. Gosh I love this villa. Quite roomy, and I can sit on the toilet and watch the olive trees ? Forgot to say that it was quite misty. Shame as it spoils the views across the lake to the mountains.
Walked 11kms or 18100 steps and 110 floors. CC €86
Cash €40
