We’ve had a little sleep in today, breakfast at 8am, leave at 9am. We have just a short ride into the Vatican City. Today we are doing a guided tour with Jamie, our own guide. There are water fountains all over the centre where you have access to a constant free top up! Always- stay hydrated! In retrospect, it’s been difficult to blog on the move today! So much to see! And it’s so hard to describe so many amazing monuments, and markers of history. So here’s a list! We walked for just under 5k to see the following: Colosseum The Roman Forum, the original governmental area - Forum of Caesar Largo di tortoise Argentina Victor Emmanuel II Monument, Piazza Navona, Pantheon We had a group coffee stop at The Pantheon area. Then continued to a ... read more

We only had 2 partial days in Rome so had to make the most of them. Today we had a tour of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Forum. This was supposed to include the underground but, apparently no one could go underground today so the tour started in the arena area. The arena is where the contests took place, man vs. animals in the morning and the gladiator against gladiator in the afternoon. Apparently, it was a convenient way to hold executions. Hungry lions that had not eaten for a day face a person. Sounds like a real equal matchup! Boys were really interested in the lifts that lifted animals and people to the arena and the guide was great with explaining where they were located. From the Colosseum we went up to Palatine Hill. ... read more

Our first flight was at 7am to Chicago so we got to the airport by 4:30am. As “Trusted Travelers” we sailed thru security. Of course, I’ve found that having no liquids or foods other than crackers, biscotti, muffins, is a major factor in getting thru easily. If we take a check bag, which we each get a free check bag, then everything questionable goes there. Bekki joined us at the airport, as she only came up with Emilio. Her departure gate was right next to ours, so she saw us off. Flights were long but Chicago was a nice break. We did not eat in Chicago though because we knew we’d get food soon on the flight, at least I was hoping I would. Gluten Free is always iffy, at least it was during Covid. Now, ... read more

Since I was unable to meet my sister in Stockholm in April due to work, we decided a long school weekend in May would make up for it. So, we decided to meet in Rome, which my sister and the kids had not been to before. My BIL had and I had been 10 years ago, and I thought it would be interesting to see how it stacked up now that I was a more experienced traveler. I love the history of Rome and how they basically just built within and around the ruins in place for thousands of years. However, I did not enjoy the scams, pickpockets, dirtiness and general chaos; I absolutely love the smaller areas of Italy - friendly people, delicious food, interesting villages.... but Rome was not high on my list. I ... read more

The last time I was in Rome I was a 5 month old baby. For some reason my parents nicknamed me the “Gnome in Rome”. Maybe it was because I always crinkled my nose. That was me smiling. I am now 12 years old and am not a gnome. I adore reading, gymnastics, hanging out with my family and friends, and much more. This travel blog is from my perspective, not Moomoo's (aka my mum). I have read my mum’s blog and am going to write an epilogue. I don’t know what I thought back then but here are my thoughts on Rome now: Trevi Fountain When I first entered the plaza, my first thought was “wow it’s so busy!” The Trevi fountain is gorgeous, and at night it was the best. But still busy. Maybe ... read more

“There‘s something about arriving in new cities, wandering empty streets with no destination. I will never lose the love for the arriving, but I’m born to leave.” - Charlotte Eriksson Well, we only had a short time in Rome, but we have loved it. Tomorrow we fly back home (that is, hopefully we fly back, provided we make our flight, more on that later). We had another full day today, roaming around this vibrant, beautiful, exasperating, and amazing city. We headed out this morning about 8:30, stopping for cappuccinos and croissants at a nearby coffee shop, before hopping on a bus to take us to St. Peter’s Basilica. We could have taken the metro, but the bus would get us closer to St. Peter’s than the metro. We waited in the security line for about 1/2 ... read more

Greetings from Rome! Monday (Oct 3) was a pretty chill last day in Lecce. We had a leisurely morning, with a breakfast of scrambled eggs and mushrooms, cheese and tomatoes, and toast, made by Susan. Delicious! I found another tailor on google, in the continuing quest to get my pantsuit hemmed, and success! The little tailor shop was just a short walk away, and we were helped along the way by really nice locals, one of whom took us right to the shop. While I was in getting my pants pinned, Susan and Beth were chatting with her (I believe there was a recommendation of various restaurant for dinner). I tried out my new purse today and I was really happy with it. We popped into several other shops (Susan got a purse and I got ... read more

It was harder than I thought to get into the routine of a blog again so it's taken me a while to pull this together. One of the downsides of taking a lot of photos - they are time consuming to review and edit! Better late than never, here's the first installment of Marilyn's 2022/23 travel adventures. I hope to catch up in the next couple of weeks... While I was in Whitehorse, I got a phone message from Passport Canada, notifying me that my passport was finally available to pick-up after its summer drama (that’s a whole different story!). Yay – I could leave the country on September 22 as planned! If the Yukon adventure in mid-September was a gentle reintroduction into travel, Italy was like getting dropped into a madhouse! I booked two trips ... read more

I’ve tried to blog since July but have gotten further and further behind. The muse just hasn’t been there. I’ll maybe get back to our grandkids trip and house hunting after we are back from this trip. But for now, we are in Italy, running amok! This trip started when we decided to attend the opera for Dale’s birthday. I then found operas for the day before and the day after his birthday that were going to be wonderful, so there the trip goes. I also wanted photos from Palatine Hill, something I didn’t get to last year, so added in Rome, but it is a good place to fly in and out of anyway. We started out, like most trips, with airplane flights. We decided to travel lighter this trip, with our 2 international size, ... read more
