Geo: 40.6299, 14.4863 Today we had two other ladies, Helen and Jane from the hotel join us for the boat trip to Amalfi and Positano, the boat was full, this time with many young people. We left Marina del Cantona on time and we passed the Li Galli islands, the three rocky islands called Gallo Lungo, Castelluccio and Rotonda, located a few miles from the beach of Positano, which mirror themselves in the limpid sea facing the pearl of the Amalfi coast. According to the old legends, they were inhabited by the sirens who seduced sailors with their melodious voice; they lost control of their ships that inevitably crashed on the rocks of the islands. In the Odyssey, Odysseus blocked his men's ears with beeswax, and made them tie him to the foot of the mast ... read more

For our last day in paradise we decided to do like the Italians do and hired an umbrella and bed. We went to Ferdinando's and he set up a tab called Australia and told us we could pay in a couple of days! Everybody else had to pay up front! We spent the day reading, swimming and relaxing. We had lunch at his restaurant. It was a fabulous day. He even gave Mum and Dad a limoncello when they paid the bill! Fabulous. For dinner we went back to Pupettos which was nice but not as nice as the first time. We had a different waiter who was nowhere near as nice as the first one. I had lemon risotto which was delicious. Back on our balcony after the final climb of the killer stairs we ... read more

Well another busy, stressful day not. Breakfasted on the balcony and as we are enjoying ourselves so much asked Mari if we can stay an extra night. No problem she said stay till Christmas! We climbed the stairs and relaxed on our balcony reading as we decided to give the sun a miss today. Went down to the beach for a late lunch at Ferdinando's and then swam as the beach was in the shade. For dinner tonight we decided to go up and had a lovely meal pretty much on the road! The waiters had to be careful when delivering the food that they weren't wiped out by a bus! Back to the apartment for a limoncello, another day in paradise done! Ps, we were so busy doing nothing that there are no photos to ... read more

Well when they talk about paradise, this must be where they are talking about. It really can't get much better than this, if they only found a way to get rid of the steps! We breakfasted at La Dolce Vita, where Mari made us cappuccinos and regaled us with stories about her early days in Positano. We then went down to the public beach (well the Italian version of a beach) and that is where we remained for the rest of the day. We lunched at Ferdinando's, bruschetta again and then went back to the beach. A few more swims and then back up those stairs. Relaxed on the balcony before heading back down the stairs to Puppeto's for dinner. It was lovely, we sat under the lemon trees with a view of the sea. Food ... read more

A bit of lie in, breakfast on the balcony and then we headed into the downtown area of Positano via the beach path. We decided to explore it later in the day when it was cooler and hopped on a ferry to Amalfi. Great views of the coastline from the ferry, lots of umbrellas covering the beaches. In Amalfi we wandered around, visited a limoncello factory and the Basillica. Only the girls went in the Basillica because you had to pay, but it was worth the 3 euro. It houses the remains of St Andrew and was very interesting. We enjoyed lunch overlooking the beach, before claiming a tiny section of the very busy public beach and having a swim. We went back to the limoncello factory right before we got the return ferry and bought ... read more

Today is a public holiday in Italy, known as Ferro Agosto. It was very quiet on the streets of Rome as we left. Headed south on the A1, with the countryside drying out a little but still lots to see. Had lunch at a large rest stop as we didn't think we would find much open if we turned off the highway. As we got close to Naples we could see Mt Vesuvius in the distance. We actually went quite close to it as we skirted Naples and headed for the Amalfi Coast. The traffic was not too bad and the views were as spectacular as we remembered. Followed the online directions for the parking for our accommodation and wound up at a parking place that was tucked into a niche in the hillside. There must ... read more

We have spent the last five days in Positano on the Amalfi Coast. On reaching Salerno at the end of our train travel from Sicily on Wednesday, we then undertook the ride of our lives; the journey to Positano was on a bus winding around and around the coastline on unbelievably narrow roads on which all manner of vehicles from Vespas to large buses manage to traverse even if someone has to reverse back, with a line of vehicles behind also reversing, so that the other may pass on one of the many hairpin bends! An experience we will never forget! Unfortunately, as Les isn't a good traveller at any time, under these conditions, he didn't fair too well at all. Needless to say Les and I didn't visit Pompeii and Vesuvius the next day with ... read more

Well it is nearly over! I have enjoyed some wonderful company these past 5 weeks and shared experiences that will be embedded in my memory forever. From visiting the lakes of Italy, meandering the canals of Venice even under floods!, to exploring new towns, clambering over ruins, tasting wonderful food, revisiting Rome and being continually in awe of the amazing remnants of a civilisation past, enduring the wonderful weather and sometimes the deplorable weather, meeting new people from Australia and other parts of our world, enjoying the hospitality of some enthusiastic italians, and of some that couldn't care, but do you know, i would not change anything of these last 5 weeks. Having dreamed of this trip for so long, my life is enriched, and I will now continue to travel as much as i can, ... read more

Greg: One of our next stops was based off a blind recommendation from a colleague at work, who had mentioned Positano was everything he thought Sorrento would have been, and it intrigued us enough to book a couple of nights before heading on to Rome. True to his word, after an hour or so of windy bus trails we reached the water, saw the coastline, and instantly knew why we had came. Narrow streets winding between colourful houses stacked up the steep hills, overlooking a huge expanse of clear blue sea with nothing else but the skyline in sight. After getting out of the bus and simply marveling for a while, we made our way down the streets dodging vespas before checking into our Hostel. We found our stay here one of the best so far, ... read more
